PUNCH-GAGE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHRIsTEN S. Crims- TENSEX, a subject of the King of Norway, and a resident of Christiania. in the Kingdom of Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punch-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to punches for making detents in desired articles. and has particular reference to providiua: a punch for forming the drill cente ing holes in metal being formed into a die. and the main object thereof is to provide a gage for the punch which will insure uniformity in the distances of the centering holes from a given line and from each other.
My invention is fully described in the,fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part. in which like characters refer to like parts in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a metal plate to be formed into a die. showing my invention and the manner of use thereof; Fig. 2 is a perspective bottom view of the device; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof; and Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings forminga part of this application I have shown a block 5 preferably of metal, such as steel or'the like. provided with a vertical bore 6 therethrough adjacent one corner thereof andthe metal immediately surrounding the same being cylindrically formed, or partially so, as shown at 7, in concentric relationship with the bore 6 and with a wall of uniform and predetermined thickness at the lower edge or ekrad jacent the bore 6 is a similar bore 8 partially through the block 5 from the bottom upwardly and meeting a bore 9 on the axis thereof but of lesser diameter than the bore 8; a pin 10 is snugly and slidably fitted into the bore 8 and provided with an extension 11 of the approximate diameter of the bore 9 andthe outer end of which is upset, as shown at 12. to limit downward, movement of the pin 10 through the mediumof a spring 13 bearing on the inner end thereof.
Loosely and slidably mounted in the bore 6 is a punch 14 of a length exceeding the vertical thickness. of the block 5 to permit grasping the upper end thereof by the fingers of the operator to raise the same sulficiently to bury the lower pointed end there- Specitication of Letters Patent.

Assuming. by reference to Fig. 1. that a line 15 of a proposed die has been drawn upon a metal plate 16. and it is desired to cut out all of the netal within the boundaries of said line 15. it is the practice to drill a multitude of holes along the inner side of the line 15 and desirably at a uniform distance therefrom and from eachunworkmanlike or time consuming methodsthat my invention was conceived, my toolpositivel gaging the distance of each drill hole from the line 15 irrespective f its shape and positively gaging the distance between drill holes My tool is shown in an initial positi n in full lines in Fig. l. and it will be note that theouter peripher of the c vlindricallportion 7 of the block 5 is arranged exlactlv against the line 15. this being done for'each of the drill holes. and thus assuring uniform distance of the center of each 'drill hole from the line 15. The wall of tli c v lindrical portion 7 is of an exterior (iametr equaling that of the particular dr ll to be employed. and the edges of all the,drill holes will. therefore. be exactly on the line 15 when completed. thefcvlindrical and concentric portion 7 permitting the block 5 to be swung through almost an entire circle and still permit the adjustment thereof against the line 15. hen the cylindrical portion 7 is against the line 15 and the punch 14 has moved inwardly of the block but is'still resting upon the surface of the plate 16. the upper end of the punch may be struck bv means of a hammer or other suitable tool thus producing the centering punch hole for the drill. this being for the initial punch hole let it be assumed. The tool is now moved over the surface of the plate 16 until the pin 10 drops into the 'lindrical portion 4 punch hole just made. and the tool is swung with the pin 10 as its center of movement until the cylindrical portion 7 is against the line 15. when the punch may be again struck to produce the second punch hole: the tool is slid over the plate 1.6 to move the pin 10 in this second punch hole and the b ock 5 swung as stated to bring the cyagainst the line 15 and the punch struck to form the third punch hole. and this may be repeated as often as is necessary according to the length of the line, regardless of its direction to insure uniformity in the positions of the punch holes, and thus of the subsequently drilled holes. with respect to the line 15 and to each other.
My tool may be made in dilferent sizes for difl'erent sizes of drills. though it will be understood that the diameter of the outer periphery of the cylindrical portion 7 will, in all-cases. equal the diameter of the proposed drill, and drill hole.
My invention is ,very simple, though highly eflicient. time-saving, fool-proof, and comparatively inexpensive. and I reserve the right to make any structural changes which do not depart from the spiritof the invention as set forth in the following claims.

what- I claim as new. and (lQHl'Q to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A punch gage. comprising a block prorided with a bore at one corner thereof and with a supplemental bore arranged parallel to said first named bore. a punch slidable in said first named bore and projecting beyond the top and bottom of said block, and a yieldinglv resisted pin in said supplemental bore projecting from the same side of the block as the sharp end of said punch.
2. A .punch gage, comprising a block pro vided with a bore at one corner thereof and cylindricallv formed around the axis of said bore as a center. a punch slidable in said bore and projecting beyond the top and bottom of said block. and a pin in said block in parallel relationship with said punch and projecting from the same side of said block as the sharp end of said punch, said cylindrically formed portion of said block serving as a gage for the axis of said punch to accurately space said axis from a given line.
