Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 17, 1915. Serial No. 40,402.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LARS F. GUs'rArsoN, a subject of the King of Sweden, who have declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the -town of Hurd, county of Bottineau, and
State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk Hal-rows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in disk harrows, and has for its object the production of a device of this character which will be of durable and economical construction and efficient in use.
A further object is the production of a disk harrow in which will be provided means for regulating the pressure upon the disks and hence the depth said disks pierce the ground in the operation of the machine.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a disk harrow embodying the invention, the central portion of the frame of the same being broken away, Fig. 2 is a section taken on line m-.r of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a top plan view showing the two central disk carriers, and illustrating the extent to which the same may be adjusted, if desired, without interfering with each other, Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail section taken on line yy of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a detail section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises an elongated frame 1 formed of a single piece of angle iron. The frame 1 is mounted upon wheels 2 arranged at the ends thereof, said wheels engaging with studs 3 secured to the ends of said frame and projecting outwardly therefrom. Extending forwardly from the frame 1 adjacent the ends thereof are connecting elements 4: and 5 adapted for engagement with adjacent portions 6 and 7 of the binder or other ma chine in conjunction with which the harrow is employed for connecting the latter with said machine.
Arranged at the under side of the supporting frame 1 is an elongated cylindrical bar 8 supported at intervals by spaced rearwardly projecting angular bearing members 9 which are fastened to the depending web of frame 1.
Cooperating with the supporting frame 1 is a plurality of disk carriers each of which comprises a forward body portion or fork 10 which pivotally embraces the bar 8 so as to permit of free vertical movement of the rearward end of said member. The branches of each member 10 engage against the adjacent sides of adjacent bearing members 9, the latter thus serving as a means of holding said members 10 against relative shifting. Projecting rearwardly from each fork member 10 is an elongated bar or strap 11 which is secured at its forward end to the rearward portion of the corresponding member 10 by bolts 12, said portion of the member 10 being channel formed to accommodate the member 11. Mounted upon the upper side of each member 11 at the rearward end thereof is a bearing member 13 secured thereto intermediate its ends by means of a bolt 14, the arrangement being such, as to permit of pivotal adjustment of the bearing member 13 in a horizontal plane. Also mounted upon the upper side of each member 11 adjacent the front end of the corresponding member 13 is an angular member 15 the rearward end of which is spaced above the upper surface of the corresponding member 1.1 to form a lip which overhangs the forward end of the corresponding member 13. Formed in each member 15 and the corresponding member 11 are alining openings, and formed in the rearward end of each bearing member 13,as clearlyshown in Figs. 1 and 3, are spaced openings any one of which is adapted, upon pivotal movement of the member 13, to be brought into registration with the openings in the corresponding members 11 and 15. A bolt or pin 18 cooperates with each disk carrier, the same being adapted for engagement with the openings in members 11, 13 and 15 in order to lock the member 13 engaged thereby in positions of pivotal adjustment, as will be readily understood.
With this arrangement, it is of course apparent that the bearing members 13 are adapted for pivotal adjustment to any .position within a comparatively wide range in order to position the disks carried thereby at the desired angle.
Mounted in the rearward end of each bearing member 13 is a transversely extendf ing spindle 19 upon the ends of which are mounted disks 20,'the same being locked to the spindle by means of nuts 21, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. Washers 21 and 21 are .is adapted to accommodate a solid lubricant for the lubrication of the corresponding bearing and spindle, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The disks are arranged so that those at one end or half of the machine are disposed in one direction, while those at the opposite end or side of the machine are disposed in the opposite direction, the efiect being that, when the device is in use, the disks at the opposite ends or sides of the machine counteract each other and thus serve, when the machine is drawn over the ground, to
- maintain the machine in a straight line.
, riers in order to Cooperating with each disk carrier are weights 23 which are loosely mounted upon a post 24: arising from each of the bearing members 13 adjacent the rearward end thereof. A split pin 25 is provided at the upper end of each post 24 for locking the weight members in position thereon. Said weight members, as is apparent, serve as a means of applying pressure to the disk carforce the disks into the ground, the arrangement being such that one or more of said weight members may be detached if desired in order. to secure the desired pressure'in any case.
Mounted upon the upper side of the supporting frame 1 at the ends thereof are boxes 26 adapted to accommodate the weight members 23 when removed from the posts 24. The boxes 26 are provided with hinged v covers 27 adapted to be locked in closed position by suitable locking devices 28.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capableof variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire toavail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a disk harrow, the combmation of a wheeled supporting frame; a series of rearwardly extending'disk carriers piy'otally connected at their forward ends to said frame to permit of free vertical movement of the rearward ends thereof, each of said carriers comprising a forward body member; a rearward bearing member mounted upon the upper side of said body member, pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said body member and extending longitudinally thereof; a lip on the upper side of said body member overhanging the forward edge portion of said bearing member, said body member and said lip having alining openings and said bearing member having a plurality of spaced openings any one of which is adapted for registration with said openings in said body member and lip, upon pivotal movement of said bearing member; a pin adapted to engage with registering openings to lock said hearing member in positions of pivotal adjustment; and disks carried by said bearing members, substantially as described.
2. In a disk harrow, the combination of a wheeled supporting frame; a series of rearwardly extending disk carriers connected at their forward ends to said frame, each of said carriers comprising a forward body member; a rearward bearing member mounted upon the upper side of said body member pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said body member and extending longitudinally thereof; a member on the upper side of said body member overhanging the forward edge portion of said bearing member, said body member and said overhz-mging member having alining openings and said bearing member having a plurality of spaced openings any one of which is adapted for registration with said openings in said body member and overhanging member, upon pivotal movement of said bearing member; a pin adapted to engage with registering openings to lock said hearing member in positions of pivotal adjustment; and disks carried by said bearing member, substantially as described.
