Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
D. OHAPLIN NUTTING AND JOSEPH D. ALLEN, OF BOWLING GREEN, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN REELS FOR HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,045, dated August 15, 1871; antedated August 10, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, D. OHAPLIN NUTTING and J osErH D. ALLEN, of Bowling Green, in the county of Warren and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Raisin g and Lowering the Reels oflteaping-lvlachines and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in mode of adjusting (raising and lowering) the reels of reapers; and consists in the use of a rack and pinion operating on an arc of a circle concentric with the driving-pulley of the reel, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a side elevation of the device, and Fig. 2 a top view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the frame, which is connected with the platform. B is the driving-pulley of the reel. O is the rack, the teeth of which form the arc of a circle described from the center of the drivingpulley B. D is a block on the rack which carries the pinion E. This pinion engages with the rack, and by it the block is moved up and down on the rack by turning the crank F, the shaft of which passes through the pinion. Gr represents the reel, which is attached to the block. H represents the shaft, and I the arms of the reel. J is a pulley on the reel-sh aft. K is the belt by which the reel is driven from the pulley B. This pulley B is double, and receives the belt L from the main driving-pulley M.
From this arrangement it will be seen that, by simply turning the crank F, the height of the reel can be varied as may be desired.
By means of the circular rack G the tension of the belt K remains the same when the reel is moved up or down.
The advantages of this arrangement will be readily understood by all who are acquainted with reaping-machines.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The reel H I having pulley J operated from the pulley B, combined, as described, with the block and pinion D E traveling over a rack, G, which is the arc of a circle struck off from the pulley B as a center, for the purpose specified.
- D. C. NUTTING.
J. D. ALLEN.
