Beit known that CHARLES F. TAYLOR, deceased, late a citizen of the United States residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, (of whose estate the STATE BANK AND TRUST CoM- PANY, a corporation of Connecticut, located in Hartford aforesaid, is executor, and of which. corporation, executor, GEORGE H.. BURT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hartford aforesaid, is vicepresident,) and GEORGE M. MCCLELLAN, of .Burnside,`in the county and State aforesaid, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Paper-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to amachine for cutting paper, in piles or stacks, employing a broad and powerfully operated blade which in each descent thereof cuts through the pile properly positioned thereunder.
The object of this invention is to adapt the machine to automatically forwardly feed the stack or pile under the blade in successive uniform steps so that a pile of very large sheets placed on the table and automatically forwardly fed will be cut or subdivided vinto sections, all of which are uniform one with another and suitable for the making of tablets and stationery.
The invention comprises means for the forward step by step feed 0f the pile of paper on the table forwardly under the knife during the time the knife is stationary in its raised position. And as carried out the feed bar for advancing the paper works in conjunction with and is controlled by the mechanism which operates the knife, -the feed mechanism being actuated by lthe knife operating mechanism at the ter1nination of the downward and upward return movement of the knife.
The invention, furthermore, comprises means whereby after the pile of paper has been advanced in its last step to be subjected to the last out by the knife, bar will be automatically retired rearwardly to its originally predetermined starting point for its action upon the next pile to be placed on the table of the machine.
The invention is described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and is set forth in the claims.

Tn the drawings, A represents the table of the machine supported by the frame, of suitable design and operating'vertically and at right angles to the table is the paper cutting knife B guided as usual in upright ways and operated under great power by the connection with the blade of the link t which is also connected with a short crank b carried o-n the shaft b2 and operated through gearing c, 02, 03 and o, from the main shaft of the machine, driven by belt c5 and pulley c6, suchpulley being clutchable and unclutchable with and from the shaft.
In standard paper cutting machines of the kind to which this invention is adapted, the driving pulley is thrust into clutch through means of a handle lever C on a rockshaft C2 for effecting the cycle of operation of the gearing and the downward and returning upward movement of the knife, and there is an automatic unclutching mechanism effected by the return rocking motion of the operating shaft C2 which automatically acts on the completion of the ascent 'of the knife to throw the knife op erating mechanism out of connection with the driving pulley or element.

The shaft e has a hand wheel c2 thereon as usually provided for manually operating the feed bar. The shaft c also. has on an end thereof, at one side of the machine another springwheel f around which runs a sprocket chain f2, such chain also running around another sprocket wheel f3- fixed on a sleeve E on a comparatively short transverse horizontal shaft F. which is supported under the frame of the machine and projects outwardly beyond the side thereof. Also fixed on the said sleeve E is a comparatively large and fine toothed ratchet wheel G partially encircling the edge of which is an arc shaped guard H adjustable around the edge of the ratchet wheel through means of the slotted link zi, one end of which is pivoted to the guard while the other slotted end portion is held in confinement by a screw studdr-this device being effective when the slotted link is adjusted upwardly to position the guard to cover more of the upper edge of the ratchet than .when the link is downwardly adjusted for withdrawing the guard to lessen the extent of the upper edge portion of the ratchet covered thereby. Suitably adjacent and parallel with the ratchet carrying` sleeve E is a shaft .l having a cam K thereon.
Loosely hung on the aforementioned sleeve supporting shaft lF is an angular lever7 one arm t carrying a pawl 2 while the other arm y' of such angular level' is provided with a roller jg with which said cam K coacts; and so that under each complete rotation of the shaft .l the pawl will have an -advancement around the edge of the ratchet wheel and then a reti-acting movement. In a greater or less portion of the forward thrust of the pawl, such pawl will be in engagement with the ratchet wheel as covered by the adjustable guard Il The annular pawl carried lever' has the. movement for the thrust of the pawl forcibly imparted thereto by the prominent portion of the cam and recedes to the depressed portion of the cam hy gravity.
The cam carrying shaft J is free relatively to the pulley L which is constantly driven by the belt L2; but the said shaft has thereon a slidable clutch member N which may engagewith and be disengaged from a. companion clutch member M on the pulley L.
Parallel with the cani shaft J is a comparatively short slidable shaft O having a rigid arm or yoke O2 in engagement with the grooved clutch member N; and this shaft has its inner end portion in proximity and atright anglesto the rear end of the afore- `mentioned rockshaft C2 and which, it is to.
be remembered, is a part of the commonly and well known mechanism provided in the standard paper cutting machines for controlling the machine as to the starting and stopping of the operation of the knife,-as paper cutting machines of the well known kind to which this invention relates include this controlling rocking shaft and the shaft is well known as having a rocking motion in one direction when the handle lever is moved one way and a reverse rocking motion at the end of the knife elevating action. it is suilicient in the present connection to state that the rocking movementsl of this shaft arc taken advantage of for controlling the action of the cam shaft J'. Vhen the paper cutting machine controlling rockshaft C2 is swung to set the machine in operation for the descent and succeeding raising of the knife, the lever arm C with its pivot toe Ct is swung from a position vunderstood as relatively to the left of the bevel ended lug on the clutch sliding shaft O, as Fig. 6 is viewed, to the position positively shown in such figure; and then when said rockshaft C2 is automatically operated at the end of the ascent of the knife to be swung to the leftward. it, by its engagement with the non-beveled side of the lug f] endwise forces the shaft and causes the sliding of the clutch member N into engagement with the clutch member M on the constantly driven pulley L. Now the cam shaft will have a. rotation imparted thereto for the feeding impulse bv the pawl to the ratchet wheel and causing. through the described connections between such ratchet wheel and the feed bar the forward feeding .movement of such bar, and the advancement of the paper for one required step forwardly beyond and under the cutting plane of the knife. So soon as the cam shaft has made one complete. revolution. it is automatically thrown out of clutch so that there may be but one feed step imparted to the paper in each period between every two cutting operations of the knife.
The means whereby the last described unclutcliing of the cam shaft is accomplished consists of av wedged shaped lug t on the clutch member N which coacts with the extremity of a bracket or small fixture s on the side of the frame, and which extremity projects intothe revoluble path of the said lug t.
The member N clutched with the immediately becoming pulley partakes of the tisana@ retired to a predetermined rearward posi-- tion in readiness to have placed thereon a fresh pile to be additionally cut. The machine is rendered capable of such function by the provision of means as follows: On the shaft e which has the connection therewith of the-chain drive for a feed bar, is

Engaged with this clutch member is a shipper lever 'v2 mounted to swing on pivot o3 and having the comparatively short angularly extended arm fu* projected within the machine frame and having connected therewith a comparatively ,long horizontally ranging bar 'U5 provided with depending abutments '06 and v7, which project across the path of movement of the feed bar D. After the paper' has been forwardly fed to the extent of the making of its last cut, such bar will then in the next stepbe brought to strike the abutment o, swinging the shipper lever a2 to place the shaft e in clutch with the pulley u, whereupon through the rotation of shaft e in the proper direction the feed bar will be retired rearwardly on the table to the point as predetermined by the adjustment of the abutment carrying bar er. The-n the rearward abutment o7 is engaged by the rearwardly moving feed bar the clutch shifter lever is caused to be reversely swung to throw the shaft e out of driving connection with the pulley u, Whereupon the feed bar will relnain in its desired rearward position in readiness for the feeding of the fresh pile.

In a paper cutting machine, the table, a reciprocatory knife, and a rock shaft for controlling the intermittent operation of the knife,-having a lever provided with a jointed toe', yieldable in one direction only,-a feed bar movable on the table, a ratchet wheel, a swinging pawl carrier having a pawl coacting with said ratchet wheel, a rotative shaft having a cam coacting with said pawl carrier, connections between said ratchet wheel and said feed bar whereby on the pawl-imparted impulses of the ratchet wheel thefeed bar will have a correspondingly advancing movement, a driving wheel appartenant to said cam provided shaft, and loose relatively thereto, a member slidable on the cam shaft, clutchable with, and unclutchable from, said driving wheel, and having an inclinedface portion, a slide rod having a bevel sided projection in the range of swinging movement of the toe provided lever of said rocksliaft, and having a yoke engaging the sldable clutch member, operable when'the rock shaft is rocked in one direction, and the rod, is slid, to move the clutch member into clutch, and a ixed'ad jacent slidable clutch member to intersect the path of revolnble movement 'of said inclined face portion thereon for automatically moving the clutch member out of clutch after a rotation of the cam shaft.

In a paper cutting machine, the feed bar and a shaft having' connections between same and the bar whereby on rotative movements of the shaft the bar will be advanced, a driving wheel appurtenant and loose relatively to said shaft, and a clutch member on the shaft movable to place the shaft in and out of clutch with the driving Wheel,
a shifter lever for said clutch provided with a bar ranging in the lineof movement of the feed bar and having abutments at opposite end portions thereof extended across the path of the feed bar and operable on the advancement of the feed bar to its predetermined limit to place said shaft in clutch with the driving wheel therefor to cause the rearward retirement of the feed bar and also operable at the end of the rearward movement of such bar to reverse the clutch operating' lever whereby said clutch member is disengaged from said driving wheel.
