Patent-ed Apr. 11, 1916 Appllcnttcn filed December 19, 1913. Serial No. 807,590.
-movable closure of various forms of receptacles; which fasteners shall be cheap and easily operated, and which shall not be liable to get out of order.
This invention consists in combination with the stationary shoulder on the body portion of the receptacle, of a revoluble wedge mounted on the closure which shall be adapted to engage the shoulder on the body of the receptacle'and force the closure against-a stationary flange carried by the body of thejreceptacle, and thereby secure the parts in the desired position.
In the accompanying dr' ring i is a plan and Fig. 2 uncle; Fig.5 is a plan of the fastening device for the head. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 9: of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the toning device.
Similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The container shown in the drawing has the usual form of a barrel and is preferably constructed of a sheet of metal properly rolled so as to form the usual bilge barrel construction, the ends of the sheet being joined by electric welding if desired. The upper end of the body 1 is preferably formed with a shallow bead 2 as shown in Fig. 4. Fitting within this upper end oi the body of the barrel is a ring 3, L-shaped in crosssec; tion, having a continuous flange 4, which ring is held in position means of the chime 5, which is composed of the outer portion 6 and the inner portion 7 connected to gether at their upper edges, which portions 6 and 7 may be pressed together to lock the ring 3 to the upper edge of the body of the barrel. This chime may be made of great strength and will prevent distortion of the end of the barrel. The head or closure 8 is of such diameter that it can be inserted through the part 7 of the chime. At intervals a series of rivets or pins 9 are securely mounted on the heed, and on these pins the locking members 10 are revoluble. The u per ends 12 of these members are preferab y.
polygonal so that they may be engaged by a wrench, and the lower ends are in the form of circumferential wedges 13, whose small ends 14 will pass below the shoulders 15 of the chime. These wedges 13 are cut away at one side, as indicated in Fig. 3. A ring 17 of rubber or other suitable packing may be placed on the flange 4 if desired.
When it is desired to secure the head in position, the locking members 10 are all turned to the position shown in Fig. 3 and the head is then laid on the shelf 4. The locking members are then turned so as to bring the small edge 1- of the wedge 13 underneath the shoulder 15 of the chime, and
continued turning in this direction will force the edge of the head 8 firmly against the flange 4. resulting in a very satisfactory locking of the head in position.
lt will be apparent that the head or closure may be of any shape or size and that it be grlaptod. to receptacles of any desired construction. The number, size, proportions and other details of these locking members can all be changed in order to meet the difierent requirements of the trade in which receptacles are to be used without departing from. the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claims.
1 claim:
i. In a receptacle. the combination of a barrel having an annular member secured to end consisting of an inwardly rojcctiug flange and a substantially cylindrical portion in engagement with the edge of the barrel. :1 rein forcing chime substantially U- shaped in crosssection extending over the edges of the barrel and said cylindrical portion to secure the annular member in position and constituting a continuous shoulder parallel to the flange and spaced apart therefrom. a closure in the form of a disk of less diameter than the chime resting on the flanges 21 Series of pins projecting upwardly from said disk. and a fastening devicke revolublv mounted on each pin and comprising a cylindrical body substantially tangential to the disk, and a circumferential wedge connected to said body with its ends so dispos d that said Wedge may be positioned entirelv Within the circumference of thel disk but is adapted to be turned and forced beat one'end and a reinforcing chime c0nsti-.
low the chime so as to force the disk against d flange;
2. In a receptacle, the combination of a body having an inwardly projecting flange tuting a continuous shoulder parallel to the flange and spaced apart therefrom, a closure of less diameter than the chime resting {in the flange, 21 series of pins projecting upsi'ardly from said closure, and a fastening device raea'olnbly mo nted on each pin and comprising a cylindrical body substantially tangential to the closure and a circumferential Wedge connected to said cylindrical body with its ends so disposed that it may be p0- sitioned entirely within the circumference of the closure but is adapted to be turned and forced below the chime to force the disk against said flange.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
