sra'rns rain I To all whom z't majq concern Be it known that I, MYRON J. PERRY, a
. citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Stamping- Machines and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrlption of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in stamping machines.
The object of the present lnvention is to improve the construction of stamping machines and to provide a simple, practical, and inexpensive stamping machine of strong and durable construction, equipped w th ribbon feeding means adapted to be readily operated to reverse the directlon of the movement of the inking ribbon to enable the same to be readily WOIlDd.finiiiti fildlfifiobf a pair of spaced spools ofribbon-rolls.
\Vith these and other objects In view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully describedfillustrated 1n the accompanying drawings andpomted out In the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stamping machine constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the other side of the machine, .Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view'of the stamping machine, Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the same, Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals ofreference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a base having an interior chamber or compartment 2 and forming a housing for front and rear ribbon rolls 3 and 4 on which an inking ribbon 5 is adapted to be wound. The inking ribbon extends through spaced openings 6 and 7 in the top of the base to expose a portion of the said ribbon 5 beneath a suitable stamp, not

shown, carried by a pivotally mounted yieldably supported stamping arm 8. The stamping arm 8 is mounted at the rear of the base on the transverse pivot 9 preferably. rigid with the stamping arm and arranged in suitablehearings on the base. The arm 8 is vieldably supported in an elevated'position by a spring 10 which may be of any suitable construction and the said pivot 9 is provided at opposite sides of the machine with tie pending arms 11 and 12 pivotally connected with actuating pawls or rods 13 and 14 which are adapted to engage ratchet Wheels 15 and 16 of front and rear ratchet mechanism. The front ratchet wheel 15 which is mounted on a suitable shaft 17 meshes with a gear wheel 18 connected with the front ribbon roll and adapted to be actuated by the ratchet wheel 15 with a step by step move-- ment produced by the operation of the stamping arm 8. The rod or actuating pawl 13 extends longitudinally of the machine from the rear to the front portion thereof and it engages the teeth of the ratchet wheel 15 at the top of the same as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and when flTe stamping arm is depressed the pawl or rod 13 is'draWn rearwardly over the teeth of the ratchet wheel 15 and is adapted to rotate the same when the arm 8 is swung upwardly by the spring 10. The pawl or rod 13 which actuates the ratchet wheel 15 is gravity acting and the said ratchet wheel is held against retrograde rotation by a check pawl 19 mounted on a suitable pivot 20 and located above the engaging front portion of the pawl or rod 13 and adapted to be lifted by the said engaging portion of the pawl or rod 13 to permit the front ribbon roller to rotate freely when the feeding mechanismis reversed as hereinafter fully explained.
The rear ratchet wheel 16 which is directly connected with the rear ribbon roll is actuated by the pawl or rod 14 which is also gravity acting and Which is located below the check pawl 21 adapted to hold the ratchet wheel 16 against retrograde rotation One arm of the lever 21* extends forwardly permit the rear ratchet wheel and the rear ribbon roll to rotate freely when the ratchet mechanism at the front of the stamping machine isin operation. When one of the arms of'tlie reversing lever is raised the other will be lowered so that one of the ratchet" mechanisms will be thrown into operation and the other thrown out of-operation. Any suitable means may be employed for securing the reversing lever in either position but friction will be ordinarily sufiicient for this purpose. The front wall of the chamber or compartment of the base is provided with a transparent plate 27 to enable the operator to ascertain the condition of the inking ribbon with respect to the rolls .so that the feeding mechanism may bereversed when necessary.
\Vhat is claimed is 1. A stamping machine including a base a stamping arm pivotally mounted on the base and provided at opposite sides thereof with depending arms, spaced-ribbon rolls.
' ratchet wheels located at opposite sides of the base and connected with the ribbon rolls,
Copies 0! this patent may be obtained for pawls or rods connected with the depending arms of the stamping arm and arranged to engage the ratchet wheels and a pivotally mounted reversing lever having means for lifting one of the pawls or rods when it is moved in one direction and for lifting the other pawl or rod when it is moved in the opposite direction, whereby either pawl or rod may be supported out of engagement with the coacting ratchet wheel.
2. A stamping machine including a base, a stamping arm pivotally mounted on the base, depending arms connected with the stamping arm and located at opposite sides of the base, spaced ribbon rolls, ratchet wheels located at opposite sides of the base and connected with the ribbon rolls, pawls -or rods connected to the depending arms of the stamping arm and arranged to engage the ratchet wheels, said pawls or rods being located at opposite sides of the said base and a reversing lever provided with operating means and having one arm arranged to engage and lift one of the pawls or rods and provided at. its other arm with a transverse portion extending across the base and lo cated beneath and adapted to lift the other pawl or rod.
In testimony whereof f affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
