WHEEL-SPOKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1916.
Application filed August 25, 1914, Serial No. 858,486. Renewed March 2, 1916. Serial No. 81,764.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMERY BRULr'J, citizen of the United States, residing at Neillsville, in the county of Clark and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l Vheel-Spokes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spokes of vehicle wheels, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the strength and utility of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim; and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of one of the improved spokes; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding; and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device may be embodied in the spokes of vehicle wheels of various forms, but for the purpose of illustration the improved device is shown applied to a conventional spoke, the body of which is represented as a whole at 10 with a flat tenon 11 at one end to engage in the mortise in the hub and a circular tenon 12 at the outer end to engage in the circular mortise or socket in the felly, the hub and felly not being shown as they form no part of the present invention. The body 10 of the spoke is provided with a longitudinal bore indicated at 13, the bore being formed spiral in outline. Fitting within the bore of the body 10 is a rod represented as a whole at 14 and entwisted from end to end to conform to and engage closely in the spiral walls of the bore of the spoke. By this means the rod is held from movement longitudinally of the spoke, while at the same Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the "Commissioner of Patents,
time, the rod is materially stiffened and strengthened transversely by the twisting of the same. Thus, the transverse strength of the spoke is very materially increased without material increase in the expense of manufacture.
The spiral walls of the bore of the body 10 may be very cheaply and quickly formed with a suitable boring implement twisted to the proper degree to form the spiral outline. Any of the various constructions of thread forming boring implements may be empl yed to form the spiral in the bore of the s oke, but the boring implements are not illustrated, as they form no part of the invention and their construction is so well known. The rod 14 is initially square as shown in Fig. 2 and is preferably extended entirely through the spoke and flush at its ends with the outer faces of the terminal tenons of the same, so that the full strength of the rod is utilized in the spoke. By this simple means a spoke of materially increased strength and utility is produced without material increase in the expense of manufacture.
The improved device may be employed on spokes of various sizes and lengths, and is applicable equally to the largest and smallest sizes of spokes and similar devices.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 2- A vehicle spoke comprising a wooden body having a longitudinal bore extending the entire length of the spoke and provided with spiral walls, and a metal bar substantially rectangular in cross section seated in said bore and conterminous therewith and twisted from end to end to conform to and tightly engage the spiral walls of the bore.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
