To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN URBAHNs, citizen of the United States, residing` at Hammond, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Seals, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in car seals and has for its principal object to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, Vdurable and reliable in operation 4and may be easily and quickly manipulated and applied to apar door to prevent the undetected opening thereof.
My invention has for another object to provide a device of this character which will obviate the necessity of employing a sealing iron or other tool to effect the application thereof.
Y The invention has for another and very important object the provision of a car seal which is constructed from a single piece of material thereby conducing toV a low cost of manufacture and resulting in a construction of a highly desirable and superior nature. Y
lVith the above and other objects in view as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in
which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the seal in blank or as it is cut from the metal sheet. Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the arrangement of the several structural features of the metal strip, at a point in the folding of the strip for its application to a door or other part to be sealed, one of the flanges on the edge of the strip being partially broken away. Fig. 3 is a similar view, the seal being completely folded and shown applied to a car door;V Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal section taken on the line 4-1 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5
designates the body strip of the seal which is cut from a sheet of tin or other metal.
This metal strip adjacent one vof its ends is wider than the remaining portion of the strip, thereby producing anges 6 upon its longtudinal edges. The adjacent end-Tof the strip constitutes a tongue 7. The widened portion 0f the strip has centrally formed therein a vdepression or recess 8 which is produced by means of a suitable die. The body 5 of the strip adjacent to the flanges 6 is further formed with a protuberance or'projection 9 projecting from one face thereof in an oppo-site direction to the bulged or outwardly :struck portion of the strip which forms the socket or recess S. A longitudinally extending tongue l() is cut from the strip at its other end, one end of esV said tongue remaining integrally vattached i to the strip while the point of said tongue projects inwardly. This tongue normally lies .in the plane of the body 5.
In the application of my invention to a car door, the metal strip 5 is first bent upon itself at the inner ends of the flanges 6V thereon so as to dispose the recess 8 in opposed relation to the spur or projection 9 on the strip. The flanges 6 onthe edges of saidv strip are now bent over upon the body of the strip as shown in Fig. 5 and crimped thereon I to retain the end portion of the strip which is provided with the tongue 7 and recess 8 in its folded position with relation to the l' body of the strip.V The tongue 7 is now bent at its point of connection to the widened portionV of the strip so that the same is disposed between said spur or projection and the recess. The body portion 5 of the strip is bent Vandthe end thereof which is pro vided with the tongue 10 extended through the staple on the door. This end of the strip is now inserted between the tongue 7 and the projection 9, and pressure is brought to bear upon the widened portion of the strip so that the projection 9 will act to force the tongue l0 out of the plane of the body of said strip. When the attempt is made to withdraw the end of the strip from between the flanged portion thereof and the body lof the strip, the tongue 10 will move over they end of the tongue 7 so that said latter tongueV will force the tongue l0 outwardly from the body of the strip and into the depression or recess 8. This tongue will effectually prevent the withdrawal of the end of the metal strip, by its interlocking engagement with the tongue 7.
