COMBINED BOILER, RETOR'I, AN-D SUPERHEATER in an apparatus for use in the destructive distillation of woodfor the production of turpentine, tar, creosote, commercial charcoal and other products and embodying a furnace an oven heated thereby, a retort arranged in the oven, a steam boiler'and a steam superheater, one object of the inven-' tion being to provide an improved apparatus of this character in which the retort, boiler 'and furnace are so constructed and arranged that the boiler is heated by the waste heat from the furnace afterpassing around the retort; a further object of the invent-ion being to also combine with the furnace,
retort and boiler a superheater which is also heated by the otherwise waste heat and thus enable a very material economy of fuel to be effected during the operation of the distilling apparatus. 1
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of' devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of a distilling apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same on the plane'ino dicated bv the line a-a of Fig. l and showing the boiler in elevation. Fig.3 is partly a plan and partly a horizontal sectional view of the same.
In the embodiment of my invention 1 provide a furnace 1 which comprises outer walls 2-3, an intermediate longitudinal wall l suitably spaced from the wall 2 and front and rear walls 5 6? These walls are constructed of masonry. The space between the walls 3-4: forms what I will term an oven 7 in which the retort S is arranged, the ends of the retort extending through-openings in the front and rear walls of the furnace as shown, and being exposed. The retort is here shown as cylindrical and is of the usual cons ructlon. The retort is spaced Specification of Letters Patent.

from the walls 34 and over the retort and also spaced therefrom is a masonry arch 9 so that a semi-annular flue 10 is formed over and across the, retort. The walls 3'& are formed on their-opposing sides with baffle ledges 1112 respectively which extend to the sides of and come in contact with the retort and under the center of the retort is a transverse supporting wall 151, the length of which is less than that of the width of the oven 7, the said supporting wall rising from the floor of the furnace. l
The battle ledge 11 is provided near the rear end of the furnace with an opening 15. The baffle ledges are in practice constructed of fire tiles and the walls and other masonry parts of the apparatus are also constructed of such tiles. I The fire box 16 of the furnace is arranged between the walls 21 at the front of the furnace, has a fire door 17 and has an arched roof 18 in the rear of which are a succession of archeslS 20-21 of progressively reduced size so that the throat of the fire box at the back thereof is progressively reduced in size by the said arches. 4/
The grate bars are indicated at 22. A fiat' arch 23 extends from a point over the fire box downwardly and rearwardly to the rear wall of the furnace so that a secondary combustion chamber 24 is formed under said arch in rear of the fire box or combustion chamber 16 and a boiler chamber 25 is .formed above said arch and between the 7 is a superheating pipe coil 27.
The boiler 28 is arranged in the boiler chamber 25 and is downwardly and rearwardly inclined and comprises a cylindrical body 29, depending water legs 80 near the ends of said body and water tubes 31 which connect said water legs. Ledges of fire tiles 32 on the upper sides of the walls 24 ex tend from said walls to opposite sides of the body of the boiler, an arch 33 in the chamber 25 extends from water legto water leg and under the water tubes 31 and a similar arch 34: also extends from water leg to water leg and over the water tubes 31. The arch 33 is provided with an opening 35 at its rear end and the arch 34 has an opening 36 at its front end so that a tortuous flue is formed in the boiler chamber and in which the water tubes of the boiler are arranged, said tortuous flue also extending directly under the body of the boiler.
The wall 4 is provided near its rear end with an opening 37 establishing communication between the flue 10. and the boiler chamber .25 and said wall also has an opening 38 which establishes communication between the combustion chamber and the front portion of the oven 7 under the retort. The tortuous flue formed in the boiler chamber discharges into a suitable stack 39.
In the operation of my improved distilling apparatus the products of combustion from the combustion chamber pass into the oven, transversely under the retort, as well as into the secondary combustion chamber 24550 that the under side of the retort is heated and the super-heating coil 27 is also heated. The products of combustion then pass upwardly throughthe opening 15 into the flue 10 reversely over the retort, causing the retort to be heated at all times and at all points of the circumference the products .ot'icomb'ustion passing from the flue 10 through the opening 37 into the boiler chamber 25 and from thence through the opening into the space or flue between the arches 33-34E forwardly between said arches and from thence up through the openings 86 and rearwardly directly under the body of the boiler and then into the stack so that the boiler and the superheater are heated by the otherwise waste heat which passes from around and under the retort.
The operation of the apparatus in the distillation of wood for the production of turpentine, tar, creosote, commercial charcoal and like products is the same as that described in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,096,687, granted to \Villiam Dunner. May 12, 191i, and assigned to the Forest Products Company, a corporation of Louisiana, and hence need not be more fully dcscril'ied in this spmification.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In apparatus of the class described. a'
furnace having a combustion chamber at one side, a boiler chamber over the com- .bustion chamber, and separated therefrom by the roof of the combustion chamber, an oven at one side of the said chambers, a retort in said oven, and a boiler in the boiler chamber, said combustion chamber being arranged to discharge products of combustion through an opening in one of its side walls into the oven below the retort and a flue being formed over and around the upper side of the retort, said flue leading from the oven and discharging through another opening in said side all into the boiler chamber.
2. In'apparatus ot' the class described a furnace having a combustion chamber at one side, a boiler chamber over the combustion chamber and separated therefrom by the roof of the combustion chamber, an oven at one side of the said chambers, a retort in said oven, and a boiler in the boiler chamber, said combustion chamber being arranged to discharge products of combustion through an opening invone of its side walls into-the oven below the retort and a flue being formed over and around the upper side of the retort, said flue leading from the oven and discharging through another opening in said side wall into the boiler chamber, the said boiler comprising a body, depending water legs and water tubes connecting the water legs, and the said boiler chamber having a tortuous flue arranged therein and through which the heated products of combustion pass, said flue having a lead in which the water tubes are arranged and another lead which passes directly under the body of the boiler.

In apparatus of the class describeda furnace having combustion chamber at one side, a secondary combustion chamber in rear of said combustion chamber and a transversely arranged bafl'le wall spaced from the rear of the first named combustion chamber and being further provided with a boiler chamber over the said combustion chambers and separated therefrom by the roof of said combustion chamber and an oven at one side of the said chambers, said combustion chamber being arranged to discharge products of combustion through an opening in one of its side walls into the oven, a retort in the oven, a flue formed over and around the retort, leading from the oven and discharging through another opening in said side wall into the boiler chamber, and a boiler arranged in the boiler chamber.
4. In apparatus of the class described a furnace having a combustion chamber atone side, a secondary combustion chamber in rear of said combustion chamber and a transversely arranged baflie wall spaced from the rear of the first named combustion chamber and being further provided with a boiler chamber over the said combustion chambers and separated therefrom by the root of said combustion chambers and an oven at one side of the said chambers. said combustion chamber being arranged to discharge products of combustion through an opening in one of itsside walls into the oven, a retortin the oven, :1 flue formed over and aroundithfe retort, leading from the oven-and discharging through another opening in said side wall into the boiler chamber,
and a-boiler arranged in the boiler chamber and superheat-ing means arranged in the secondary combustion chamber.
In apparatus of the class described a lmnace han'ing a combustion chamber a. secondary combustion chamber in rear of the first named combustion chamber and a series of progressively smaller arches forming the rear ends of the combustion chamber and also forming a rearwardly 1) step by step contractin discharge throat for said first named com ustion chamber.
