Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4., 191e.
Application led February 11, 1914. Serial No. 818,142.l
To all vwhom t 'may concern.'
.Be it known that I, AUGUSTA Picnnnmc CooLBno'rn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge, countyof Middlesex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have inlvented certain new and useful Improvements in Veils, of which the following is a specifi-- cation.
This invention relates to veils and particularly to the adjustment of the veil about .the throat. Various attempts have been made to provide a simple andetlicient fastening for the lower part of the veil so that it might be gathered in about the throat and yet be drawn down from the hat. As far 4as is known, this problem has never been satisfactorily solved, and the only relief for the `-ditlihas been such makeshift devices as women have been able to contrive for their own personal use, such as the use of pins or the twisting up of parts of the veil which may be tucked under the collar. of these are unsatisfactory and annoying and tend to distort or rupture the veil.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eiiicient means for gathering in the veil, holding it tightly in place and drawing it smoothly down from the hat.
. like .reference numerals are dicate corresponding parts,
y strips 1 and 2 is At one end of the device so formed I place The construction and operation of my device will be more fully discussed in the specification which follows. In the drawings which forma part of that specification, I have shown an embodiment which I have found extremely satisfactoryto use and one which iswell adapted to commercial production at a reasonable cost. l
Throughout specification and drawings employed to inand in the drawings: Figure 1` is a general View of my veilv applied to a wearer, Fig. 2 is a view of my device as applied to the veiling, Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the contracted band vafter it has been applied to the veil, Fig. i
a general View' of a veil with my device applied thereto, and Fig. 5 showing the manner of applying my device to a veil.
My device consists of a pair of external strips l and Q'prefe'rably. of'ribbon or similar material and stitched along one edge and just inside of the other edge. Between these inclosed an elastic strip 3.
a detailed section y a suitable catch such as the'eye and atthe other end a cooperating member such as the l hook 6.
In applying my tic is stretched out until both the ribbon members are drawn tight. The veil is thenintroduced between the which are formed by bon. The veil is then stitched between these two flaps 7 so as to be held firmly-in place. The strip is now relieved, whereupon the longitudinal flaps 7 elastic fillingv 3 draws up on the strip and the veil, shortening the same slightly as indicated at Fig. 3 and slightly puckering the veil as also indicated in that figure. the veil is applied, veil is drawn over the hat and the two ends of the elastic' portion drawn around and fas# tened behind the neck. The ends of the veil may then be tied over indicated at 8 in Fig. 1. This causes the veil ,to be drawn smoothly about the hat and dis posed neatly. about the lower part of the face and the throat. If it be desired to expose the top of the hat as.
device to the veil, the elasthe edges ofthe rib When u the upper part ofl the.v
the face .fer any purpose itis only necessary 'I to unclas'p the hook and `eye 6 and 4 an raise the veil to the edge of the, hat.r lThe veil may be promptly and easily .restored vby drawingit down again and refastening the ends ofthe band behind the neck.
'Various modifications in the form'and conf'.
struction of my device may made, all without departing from the spirit of my -invention'if within` the limits of. the
appended claim.
What I therefore claim and desire tio secure by Letters Patent is:
.A veil having a pair of covering strips.
located on the lower edge thereof and leaving a pair of marginal flaps joined one on each side to the material of the veil, an elastic member run through between said strips and attached at'theend thereof when eX-' panded so as to normally pucker the veil in contracting, and an engaging device on one end of one strip and a device to be engaged on the opposite end of said strip for uniting the ends of said strips.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. l
AUGUSTA PIGKERING COOLBROTH.
