To all whom it may concern Be it known that we. HENRY A. CARPEN- TEP. and ARTHUR W. VARNER, citizens of the United States, residing at Sewickley, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Charging-Machines for Gas-Retorts, of which the following is a specication.
Our invention relates to improvements in charging and discharging machines of the type particularly shown in Patent Number 1,144,165, dated June 22, 1915.
The charging and discharging machine shown, described and claimed in the application, as well as the machine herein shown, particularly relates to a machine for charging and discharging horizontally arranged gas retorts, and is designed to be moved along the face of a stack of gas benches. The apparatus, as illustrated, includes a horizontally movable and vertically adjustable charger and discharger adapted to be moved into different horizontal planes for the purpose of charging and discharging the' retorts located in various horizontal planes; a coal hopper, a telescopic chute through.V which coal is delivered to the charger, coal feeding means interposed between thevhopper and the chute; and a vertically adjustable frame designed to carry the telescoping chute and charger and discharger.
A11-object of the present invention is to provide in a machine of the character mentioned, means for catching any coal spilled during the operation of charging the retorts or duringjthe charge conveying movement of the charger, and conveying the spilled coal into the coal hopper carried on the machine.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an application of our invention, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of a machine embodying our invention, the sectionbeing takenzon line 1-1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a horizontal sectional plan; Fig. 3,"a part side elevational and a part vertical sectional view particularly showing the horizontally traveling conveyer with relation to the charger; Fig. 4, a sectional plan particularly showing the supporting means for the .spill elevator; and, Fig. 5, a detailed vertical section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the main frame of the machine supported on wheels 2, which latter travel along a track 3 located in front of a stack of gas benches, not shown. At the top of the machine and extending longitudinally thereof is a hopper 4 adapted to contain coal to be charged into the different retorts of the stack of benches. The retorts to be charged and discharged are arranged in rows on different horizontal planes and the mechanism for conveying coal thereto and discharging the coke therefrom should be capable of being moved vertically to enable these operations to be performed, and to this end, vertically extending rotatable screws 5 are employed in connection with a suitable motor and intermediate mechanism, not shown herein, but which are shown and described in the aforesaid patent. The screws 5 are designed to raise and lower a vertically movable frame including, as illustrated` a horizontally disposed girder 6 and depending members 7. This framework is designed to carry the charger and discharger shown in the form of scoops 8, as well as a telescopic chute 9 extending from a point immediateh1 below a coal feeding mechanism 10, the latter being located intermediate of the bin 4 and the top of the chute. The scoops 8 as particularly shown bv Fig. 3 are supported by and movable with a carriage 11 adapted to be moved longitudinally of the machine on a track 12 carried by the vertically adjustable frame.

During the operation of charging the retorts, and particularly when the charger is filled up to its charge conveying capacity, as it should be in practice, some of the coal is liable to be spilled and unless some means are provided for catching this coal and conveying it to the coal supply hopper, the efficiency of the machine is considerably reduced. The means shown by us for accomplishing this end include. a vertically traveling spill elevator 14 designed to operate within vertically extending casings 15, 16 and 17. The casing 16 is carried on the vertically adjustable frame, and telescopes within the fixed casing 17, this latter casing, as well as 15, being attached to the main frame of the machine.
The endless spill elevator 14 is provided with coal receiving buckets 18, and, as illustrated, passes over pulleys 19, 20, 21 and 21a carried on the main frame 1 of the machine, and in addition thereto, runs on pulley wheels 22 and drive wheels 23, the two latter wheels being supported from and movable with the vertically adjustable frame. This arrangement, it will noted, provides for a horizontal or lateral movement of the elevator during a portion of its travel, and that the horizontally traveling portion is movable vertically with the vertically adjustable frame and the charger carried thereby, thus definitely spacing and positioning this portion relatively to the charger. T he portion of the elevator having the horizontal travel and capable of` being adjusted vertically moves through a trough 25 secured to and movable with the vertically adjustable frame.
Located at the front of the machine and in communication with the trough 25, we provide an adjustable sectional chute or a spill collecting device 2G, the latter being adapted to be projected forwardly from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3 to the position shown in dotted lines, so as to enable it to be carried outwardly from the machine and under a retort as indicated at 27. lThis adjustable chute is adapted to catch any coal that may be spilled between the end of the charging machine and the retort, and to direct the same downwardly into the trough 25. The forward and backward movement of the chute 26 is effected by means of weighted levers 28 and 29, the connecting rope 30, and rods 31, the latter being connected at their opposite ends respectively to the levers 29 which are located on opposite sides of the machine, and at their opposite ends to brackets 32 secured to a section of the adjustable chute.
The return or closing movement of the chute or spill collecting device is automatically eifected by means of a roller 33 carried ou the carriage 11 coming into contact with lever 28, as the charger is withdrawn from a retort and is projected by the weighted levers 29 and their connecting rods after roller 33 passes ofl' of lever 28. In its closed or back position, a portion of the chute extends into the path of travel of the charger, and as the charger' moves forward it will tend to move the chute into its projected position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3.

From the construction illustrated and described, it will be clear that any coal spilled into the longitudinally extending trough 34 will be conveyed forwardly by the endless belt conveyer 35 and deposited in the trough 25, and that any coal caught by the adjustable chute will also be deposited in trough 25, and from thence carried bv means of the buckets on the elevator 14 up to and into a small hopper 36 located at one side of and in communication with the main hopper or bin 4 located at the top of the machine.
The means illustrated for` operating the elevator 14 and the horizontally traveling conveyer 35 are carried by the vertically adjustable frame and include a motor 37 having its shaft provided with a gear wheel 55, the latter adapted to articulate with a gear 39 from which motion is imparted to the drive wheel 23 by means of the intermediate gearing 41, 42, 43, all inclosed within a suitable dust-proof casing 45. Shaft 4G upon which the drive wheels 23 are mounted is provided at one end with a bevel gear 47 designed to mesh with pinion 4R located on an end of drive shaft 49. A drive wheel 50 for the horizontally traveling conveyer 35 is mounted on shaft 49. Means for adjusting the tension of the conveyer 35 and the spill elevator 14 include for the conveyer an adjusting screw 51 and a slide 52, and for the elevator a screw 53 and a slide 54.
l/Vhat we claim is 1. In a charging machine, the combination with a vertically adjustable horizontallymovable charger, of means for catching and conveying the spill from the charger, including a vertically traveling elevator arranged to travel horizontally during a portion of its travel, said horizontal portion being vertically adjustable with the charger.

In a charging machine, the combination with a vertically adjustable frame and av horizontally movable charger carried on the frame, of means for catching and conveying spill from the charger including a vertically traveling elevator arranged to travel horizontally during a portion of its travel, said horizontal portion being vertically adjustable with the charger.

In a charging machine, the combination With a vertically-adjustable frame. of a charger carried on the frame, a horizontally-traveling conveyer supported from the frame and vertically adjustable therewith, a vertically-traveling elevator arranged to travel horizontally during a portion of its travel, and means carried by the frame for effecting the horizontal travel of the elevator and its vertical adjustment therewith.
5. In a charging machine, the combination with a charge-supply hopper, of a vertically-adjustable charger, and spill-collecting means positicned relatively to the charger to collect the spill and deliver it to the charge-supply hopper.

In a charging machine, the combination with a charge-supply hopper, and a vertically-adjustable frame, of a charger carried by the frame, and means to collect the spill and deliver it to the hopper comprising a vertically-traveling elevator arranged to travel horizontally during` a portirn of its travel. means carried by the frame for effecting the horizontal travel of the elevator and its vertical adjustment therewith, a trough in which the elevator travels, and an adjustable chute in communication with the trough.

In a charging machine, the combination with a charge-supply hopper, of a vertically-adjustable -frame, a horizontallymovable charger carried by the frame` spillcollecting means positioned relatively to the charger to collect the spill and deliver it to the hopper bv a continuous operation, said means including a vertically-traveling elevator arranged to travel horizontally during` a portion of its travel, a coperating horizontally-traveling conveyer, said conveyer and horizontally-traveling portion of the elevator being vertically adjustable with the frame, a trough in which the horizontallytraveling portion of the elevator travels, and an adjustable chute in communication With said trough.
16. In a charging machine for gas retorts, a charger adapted to introduce a charge into a retort, a source of charge supply, and
means collecting the spill from the charger and delivering it to the source of supply concurrently With charger operations.
