To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGEFBROGKWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eden township, in the county ofl Fayette and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful improvements inV Railway-Ties, Vof which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the cross ties which support the rails of railway tracks, and more particularly to ties which are constructed of metal.
The invention has for its object to provide a metallic tie of novel form and construction, whereby great strength and durability lare obtained, and at the same time a cushioned support for the rails is had.
The invention also has for its object to providea tie of the kind stated which is firmly held in place on the road bed, and is effectually prevented from shifting in the direction of the length of the track or sidewise thereof.
With the objects stated in view, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a crosssection on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the tie is composed of atop metallic plate 10 and a bottom metallic plate 11 below the same. These plates are separate, and spaced so that a cushioning block 12 of wood or other suitable material may be interposed therebetween. The cushioning members do not eX- tend throughout the entire length of the tie but are only at the rail-engaging ends there of, thereby effecting a saving of wood or other material used for the cushioning members.
At the longitudinal edges of the top plate 10 are continuous, integral downturned flanges 13, and similar flanges 14 are at the longitudinal edges of the bottom plate 11. These flanges lap suliciently to prevent the plates from shifting laterally relative to each other, and they also assist to hold the cushioning members 12 in place, the same fitting between the flanges 13.

At the longitudinal center of the bottom plate 11 is an integral depending vertical flange 15 having at `the bottom outstanding flanges 16 extending in opposite direction from the respective sides of the flange. The depending flange is therefore of inverted T-form and its function is to anchor the tie in the roadbed and prevent the same from creeping in the'direction of the length of the track. The flanges 14 also assist to prevent creeping of the tie in this direction. It will be understood, of course, that when the tie is in place, the flanges 14 and 15 are embedded in the road bed.
The rails of the track are indicated at 17, they being secured to the tie by inner and outer clamping members 18 and 19, respectively, engaging the base flanges of the rail.
The inner rail-clamping members 18 are secured to the top plate 10 of the tie by bolts 20, and the outer rail-clamping members 19' are each secured by a U-bolt 21. These U-bolts pass under the flanged bottom of the flange 15, and upward on opposite sides thereof, and through the plates 10 and 11, as well as throughthe cushioning members 12, thereby holding the latter in place. The upper ends of the U-bolt shanks pass through the clamping members 19, and rise therefrom a suflicient distance to receive nuts 22, which are screwed down against the top of said clamping members.
The bottom of the plate 11 has transverse webs 23 having recesses 24 in their outer vertical edges which form seats for the shanks of the U-bolts 21. These webs eX- tend between the bottom of the plate 11 and the sides of the flanges 15, and serve to lend added strength to the structure, and also to prevent the tie from shifting in the direction of its length.
Where a `ioint between rails 17 occurs, a fish plate 25 is provided, the same being secured by the nuts 22.
The plates 10 and 11 are clamped together midway between their ends by a U-bolt 26 arranged in the same manner as the U-bolt 21. This portion of the plate 11 has a bottom web 27, the same as the webs 23, and also provided with seats for the shanks of the U-bolt 26. The U-bolt 26 is secured by nuts 28 screwed down on the top plate 10, and held by a nut lock-plate 29 seating on top of the plate 10, and having apertures 30 in which the nuts seat, whereby they are prevented from Yturning oil the U-bolt Shanks.
