This invention relates to attachments to bottles to prevent surreptitious refilling of the bottle, and has for oneof its objectsto improve. the construction and increase the eificiency and utility of devices ofthis-character.

A portion of the body of the bottle is represented at 10 and the neck portion at 11, the latter being slightly tapered from end to end with the smaller diameter next to the body of the bottle.
The improved device is located within the neck of the bottle and comprises four parts, an outer shell-shaped member 12 closed at the outer end and open at the inner end, a plug member, indicated as a whole at 13. and bearing against the lower open face of the shell, an annular member, represented Snee ificatioii of Las gna;

1 1' of the bottle at its juncture with the body' lO a'nd having a seat 15 to receive a valve 16, the latter being preferably tapered, and with a depending guide stem 17. Suspended from the'stem 17 by afiexible cord or like member 18 is a bar or stop 19 enlarged at the ends, as shown at 20. Depending from the lower face of the plug 13' isa stop 21 to limit the upward move ment of the valve, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The outer closed end 22 of thefshell 12 is smaller in diameter than'the diameter of the'bottle neck, and between theouter end 22 and the body of the shell 12 an annular channel 23 is formed, and leading inwardly relatively large cavity 25 opening at" its outer end into the interior of the shell 12 and with its inner end closed. Formed in the plug 13 at the opposite side is a cavity 26 opening downwardly into the space be tween the valve seat 14 and the plug. Formed-through the plug13 is a transverse passage 27 communicating at its inner end with the cavity 25 and likewise communicating with the cavity 26. The passage 27 is located above the lower line of thecavity 25, as illustrated in Fig. 1, tobafileattempts ment to to introduce a wire or other imple displace the'valve l6. 7
'A relatively small vent orifice 28 is formed through the body of the plug 13 and provides communication between the interior of the shell 12 and the passage 27, and preventing the formation of air pockets in the passages or cavities. By this simple arrangement, it will be obvious that, when the bottle is standing erect, the valve 16 will remain closed by gravity and efi'ectually prevent the introduction of any liquids into the body of the bottle, but if the bottle be turned upon its side or inverted, the valve 16 will open by gravity and allow the liquid to flow through the cavities 25-26 and the passage 27 into the shell 12 and thence out through the orifices 24c, and then, when the bottle is restored to its vertical position, the valve 16 will be automatically closed by the action of the member 1920 and prevent the introduction of any liquid into the bottle. 7
It will be noted that the shell 12 is located some distance below the outer or lip portion of the neck 11 of the bottle so that an ordinarv cork canbe inserted in the neck externally of the shell and the other attachments, but the cork isnot shown as it forms no part of the present invention. The shell 12, plug 13,, and annular seat 14 will preferablv be secured in position by cementing or "by other suitable means and are not'de tachable after-once being inserted.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a deviceof the class described, a
shell closed at the outer end and adapted to be secured inthe neck of a bottle and having an annular depression near the outer end with'the portion of the shall externally of'the depression of less diameter than the body of the shell and with a plurality of orifices in the depression providing communication with the interior of the shell, a plug adapted to be disposed in the'ne'ck fof said bottle and closing the inner end of the shell, said plug having passages at opposite sides communicating respectively with the interior of the shell and with the neck of the bottle and connected by a transverse passage, and an outwardly opening valve adapted to be supported in the neck of said bottle between'the body of the same.

In a device of the class described, a shell closed at the outer end and adapted to be secured in the neck ofa bottle and having transverse orifices, a plug adapted to be disposed in the neck of said bottle and closing-the innerend of the shell, said plug having an outwardly opening cavity communicating with the interior of the shell, an inwardly opening cavity communicating with the interior of the neck of the bottle and a transverse cavity opening through the sides of the plug and communicating at one portion thereof with the outwardly opening cavity and communicating at another portion with the inwardly opening cavity, and an outwardly opening valve adapted to be supported in the neck of said bottle between the plug and the body of the same. 1 o
