G. M. DEPEW.
BAND HOOP.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 17. 1915.

GEORGE M. DEPEW, OF CANANDAIGUA, NEW YORK.
BAND-HOOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 29,1916.
Application filed April 17, 1915. Serial No. 22,018.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. DEPEW, a resident of Ca'nandaigua, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band-Hoops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to band hoops for barrels, bales, or the like, and particularly to crimped 0r corrugated band hoops, and to means for connecting the ends of the strip of which the hoopis formed.
The object of the invention is to provide a hoop of the character mentioned, with a cheap, simple and efiicient connection between the corrugated overlapping ends of the hoop-forming band.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates the invention and forms part of the specification;Figure 1 is a perspective view of a band hoop with the improved'connection thereon; Fig. 2 is a partial perspective view showing the inner side'of the connection; Fig.3 is a sectional view length wise of the band between the ends of the clip; Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of a modification, Fig. 5 showing the clip detached; Figs. 6 and 7 are like views of another modification.
The improvement to be described is applicable to metal band hoops which are either. corrugated or crimped throughout either the whole or a part of their length, but in either case the ends or parts which overlap and which are locked together in the complete hoop, must be corrugated or crimped correspondingly for engagement.
In the drawing numeral 1 denotes a metal band hoop or tie, 2 transverse corrugations in the band, and 3 portions of a hoop I left uncorrugated. Overlapping corrugated ends are denoted by 4. When these ends have been overlapped to the required extent they are easily and securely locked together by a metal clip 5, comprising a metal strip bent around the overlapping parts. The blank from which the clip is formed is simwide enough to cover a plurality of the corrugations of the overlapping ends. Preferably the ribs and intermediate valleys of the hoop are regular curves, but this is not essential. When greater strength is required, and when the band has considerable overlap, I am not limited to a single clip.
When the hoop is strained by being forced on to a barrel, a large portion of the strain will be sustained by the ribs of the overlapping parts, rather than by the clip. Owing to the simplicity of the connection, the hoops can be transported before being bent to circular form, and be formed 'up whenabout to be used. The hoop corrugations and the outer end of the clip form good striking places for driving on the hoop, and the opposite ends for driving the hoop oil.
The clip shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is made from an uncorrugated blank or strip. But in some cases it is proposed to use strips for clips which are provided with longitudinal corrugations, 6, at the central partof the clip, the parts at the ends, including the bends 7 being uncorrugated. Or the clip strip may be corrugated at its ends, 8, the central part, including the bends 7, being uncorrugated. The corrugations of the clip are formed to engage with corrugations on one side of the overlapping hook-ends, for additional security.
In band hoops heretofore suggested, the ends of the bands have generally been connected by tongues and slots, or other specially formed ends, all of which tend to weaken the ends. In my construction this is'avoided.
7 Having thus described the invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is A band hoop having overlapping interfitting corrugated parts and a metal clip to be In testimony whereof, I have signed this bent about the interfittlngfparts, the opposspecification in the presence of two subscribing faces of the clip being orced together to ing witnesses.
