T all whom it may concern a citizen of the United States, residing at Milford, county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Bottle-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a bottle cover especially adapted for large sized bottles and ordinarily provided with a handle, making it a demijohn, which shall be neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to produce, will afford efficient protection to the bottle under the ordinary conditions of use, and will also provide an air space around the bottle, which assists greatly in retaining the contents at a uniform temperature, 2'. 6. prevents the temperature of the contents from being unduly raised in warm weather and also prevents freezing of non-alcoholic liquids under ordinary winter conditions.
With these and other objects in view, I have devised the novel cover which I will now describe, referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and using reference characters to indicate the several parts.
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section, illustrating my novel bottle cover as in use, and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view on a reduced scale.
-10 denotes the bottle which may be of any ordinary or preferred design, although I preferably use substantially the design shown in the drawing, the neck having straight tapering sides and the usual enlargement at the outer end of the neck being omitted. My novel cover is preferably made of metal, and for convenience in manufacturing, I make it in two parts, with a seam 11 at the shoulder. The configuration of the cover corresponds substantially with the configuration of the bottle, but the cover is made larger than the bottle and extends beyond the bottom of the bottle when the bottle is inserted in the cover and is in engagement with the shoulder thereof. The body portion of the cover is provided with a plurality of (in the present instance, three) circumferential internal ribs 12 and contiguous thereto is preferably provided with external ribs 13. cover at the internal ribs is slightly less than the external diameter of the bottle, so that it requires the application of a little force to seat the bottle in the cover, the ribs yielding slightly and gripping the bottle firmly so that it is held without possibility of movement. Another result effected by the internal ribs is the production of an air space 1 1 between the cover and the bottle. The external ribs add to the strength of the cover, thus enabling me to use lighter metal than would otherwise be advisable, which avoids superfluous weight and reduces the cost of production. These ribs also provide contact points for other articles, and in connection with the enlarged diameter of the cover insure that quite heavy blows upon the cover will not be transmitted directly to the bottle, and the danger of breakage of the bottle under any ordinary condition of use is practically eliminated. The provision of the air space is an important feature of construction in that it assists greatly in retaining the contents of the bottle at a uniform temperature, preventing undue raising of the temperature in warm weather and greatly reducing the danger of freezing of non-alcoholic liquids in cold weather.
In assembling, the bottle is inserted at the bottom of the cover, and is seated tightly therein, being held against any movement whatever by engagement of the shoulder of the bottle with the shoulder of the case, as at 15, and by engagement of the body of the bottle with the internal ribs, as already explained. A resilient disk 16, which may be of cork, felt or any suitable material, and preferably corresponds approximately with the internal diameter of the cover, is then placed over the bottom of the bottle, then a metallic disk 17 is preferably placed over the resilient disk to protect it, then a nonmetallic ring 18, preferably of wood, is placed over the metallic diskand then the parts are all securely locked in place by turning the edge of the cover over the outer edge of the ring, as at 19.
E20 denotes rubber bosses which are secured to the outer face of the ring and serve as feet upon which the covered bottle stands. These bosses prevent the bottle from marring or in any way injuring a finely polished table or counter and also serve as an additional means of cushioning the bottle and preventing it from being broken if subjected to rough usage.

Having thus described my invention, I claim g 1.
