Description

UNITED STATES FICE.
ELEANOR O. SPROUL, OF GREEN POINT, NEW YORK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,344, dated July 25, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELEANOR C. SPRoUL, of Green Point, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Braider and Embroidery Attachment for Sewing-Machines; and I do here by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved device attached to a sewing-machine table. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail section of the same taken through the line as m, Fig. 1.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved attachment for sewing-machines by means of which velvet, silk, braid, &c., may be rapidly and accurately sewed upon ladies dresses and other work with an embroidery stitch and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts of the attachment, as hereinafter more fully described.
A and B are the two parts or plates of the device, which are made in about the form and manner shown in the drawingthat is to say, their bodies are slotted to receive the screw by which they are secured to each other and to the table. The plates AB are made with an offset, as shown in Fig. 1, to bring the guides at 1) formed upon their forward ends into proper position to receive the work. The guides to b are channels formed by bending a portion of the material of which the plates A B are formed over upon itself, as shown in Fig. 2. By loosening the clampingscrew the plates A B may be adjusted so as to bring the guide-channels a b to a distance apart equal to the breadth of the velvet, silk, or braid required to be used. 0 is a small spring, one end of which is attached to or formed upon one of the guide-channels, as a, and its other or free end projects into such a position as to rest upon the velvet, silk, or braid passing through the said guide-channels and press upon it with sufficient force to keep it drawn smooth.
In usingthe device the velvet, silk, or braid is inserted right-side downin the channels or guides at b, and the material upon which it is to be sewed is placed right-side down in proper position upon it. The sewing is done just as the velvet, silk, or braid passes from the guides at b as the work is fed forward. The lower thread should be silk or worsted, according to the material, and the embroidery is thus formed at the same time that the sewing is done.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The slotted and adjustable plates A a B b and spring 0, when all are constructed and arranged as and for the purpose specified.
E. O. SPR'OUL.
