C. S. HALLSTROM.
BRUSH.
APPLICATION FILED MAII.23, I9I4.

BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 29, 1916.
Application filed March 23, 1914. Serial No. 826,695.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CARL S. HALLsTRoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mankato, in ythe county of Blue Earth and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Brush, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fountain brushes, its principal object being to provide a brush especially designed for use in cleaning vehicles, the back of the brush being so shaped as Ato be readily inserted into small spaces, such as those found between the spokes of wheels, etc.
A further object is to provide a fountain brush which can be readily attached to an ordinary hose and to which the bristles can be securely fastened without danger of being loosened by the jets of water issuing from the back of the brush.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear .as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit ofthe invention.
Inthe .accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :--F igure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through the brush. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on line A-B Fig. l.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a substantially semicylindrical brush back which is closed at one end, as shown at 2 while its other end merges into `a cylindrical stem or handle 3 the free end of which is preferably provided with a nipple or coupling 4 whereby it can be connected to an ordinary hose. The back 1 is of course hollow and has openings 5 in the flat top thereof and in the arcuate bottom. Ihe bottom openings receive the bristles 6 which are arranged in strands and looped. rI hese loops extend up to the top of the back as shown in Fig. 2 so that they'will be engaged and retained by the loops 7 of a wire or wires 8, these wire loops extending through the top openings 5. Outlet openings 9 are formed in the arcuate bottom of the brush back at points between the bristle tufts and the water or other cleansing fluid supplied to the back of the brush is adapted to be discharged in jets from these openings 9. A covering strip 10 of metal or any other desired material is secured in any preferred manner to the upper portion of the back l so as to conceal the exposed portions of the wires which engage the loops of the bristles.
In using the device herein described, the
handle 3 is connected to a hose whereby water or other cleansing Huid may be supplied readily to the brush. The brush is then used as ordinarily and the bristles will not only loosen and clear away any accumulations of dirt, but the jets of water discharged through the openings 9 will soften the dirt and wash it away. Importance is attached to the fact that the water is not discharged through the openings in which the bristles are mounted but is discharged through separate openings so that the force of the current issuing from the brush will not tend to loosen the bristles and force them out of their positions in the brush.
It will be seen that the device is very simple and durable in construction, can be cheaply made, and efficiently used.
What is claimed is A fountain brush including a substantially semi-cylindrical back constituting a liquid container for receiving liquid under pressure, a handle extending from and opening into the back and constituting an inlet therefor, there being openings within the rounded wall of the back, looped bristles extending through said openings and terminating between the walls of the back, there being openings in the top of the back, wires bearing upon said top and having loops extending through the openings therein and engaging the tufts of bristles to hold said bristles within their openings, there being additional openings in the rounded wall of as my own, I have hereto atiXed my signathe back and between the tufts of bristles ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
for the escape of liquid from the back, and a cover plate secured upon the top of the CARL S' HALLSTROM' back and hearing downwardly on and con- Witnesses:
cealing the fastening wires. A. P. KRosT,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing C. A. MAwALsoN.
