SHIELD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.
Application filed February 9, 1915. Serial No. 7,195.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARGARET M. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shields, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a shield.
One of the objects of thepresent invention is to provide a simple, substantial, cheaply manufactured shield for protecting the face from sun and wind, which shield may also be used as a fan; and particularly to provide a novel grip by which the shield is held when in use.
Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the shield, showing the manner in which it is preferably supported by the hand. Fig. 2 is a modification of the shield. Fig. 3 shows the application of the reinforcing material. Fig. 4.- is a section on line H, Fig. 3.
A indicates a shield substantially rectangular in shape. The shield as a whole is preferably constructed of cardboard or like material which is sufficiently rigid to permit it to be used as a fan, wind shield or the like. A handhold or grip is provided for the purpose of conveniently holding the shield when in use by first cutting or slitting the cardboard on two parallel lines, as indicated at 2 and 3, to produce a flexible handhold, strip or grip hand then cutting away a portion of the cardboard and strip on each side of the strip, as indicated at 5 and 6, to produce openings through which the index finger may be inserted, as shown in Fig. 1. The shield is most conveniently supported in this manner but two fingers or all may be inserted, if so desired. For the purpose of preventing the strip from breaking or the cardboard from tearing, a piece of reinforcing material 7 may be pasted or otherwise applied, one 011 each side of the shield, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4.
In Fig. 2 a modification is shown. In this instance an elliptical shaped opening 8 is punched out of the cardboard. A strip 9 is then laid across said opening and riv= eted on, as indicated at 10. i
A shield constructed in the manner shown can be very cheaply manufactured and can for this reason be distributed as an advertisement at baseball grounds, aviation meets, open air concerts and like places where people are gathered and where they are more or less exposed to wind, sun or heat. It may be used under all conditions, as it not only serves as a shield or shade against wind and sun, but may also be used as a fan when the sun or weather becomes too warm.
IVhile the slits and strip formed by the slits are here shown as cut on an angle, I wish it understood that I do not wish to limit myself to this particular position or angle. Only practical experience has pro ven it to be the most convenient.
The materials and finish of the several parts of the shield are such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer may dictate. A I wish it understood that various changes 1n form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims and that I do not wish to limit myself to the specific design and construction here shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A shield composed of a body having an opening and a strip extending across the opening, said strip being secured at its ends to the body and having its intermediate portion free and located so as to allow the back of the hand to be disposed over the front of the body and a finger to be engaged beneath and over the strip and in said open ing so as to support the body in part from the back of the hand.
2. A shield composed of a body having an opening, a strip extending across the opening, said strip being secured at its ends to the body and having its intermediate portion free and located so as to allow the back of the hand to be disposed over the front of the body and a finger to be engaged beneath and over the strip and in said opening so as to support the body in part from the back of the hand, and a reinforcing member secured to each side of the body and to said strip and having cut-out parts which register with the adjacent portions of said opening.
3, A .Shield composed of a body and a member secured at its ends to the body and In testimony whereof I have hereunto set having its intermediate portion movable my hand in the presence of two subscribing 10 away from the body, said member being Witnesses.
located so that the back of the hand may be placed over the front of the body and one MARGARET THOMAS of the fingers engaged beneath and over the Witnesses:
front of the member so as to support the JOHN H. HERRING,
body from the strip. W. W. HEALEY.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
