Be it known that I, Haamr Sawrsa, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Muske on, county of Muskegon, and State of Mic igan, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Double-'Whip Cranes, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cranes and particularly to the type of cranes such as are employed on boats, wharves, docks, storehouses or the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a crane which is simple in construction, efiicient in operation, and economical to manufacture for use in connection with or without a track rail system for loading and unloading boats, trains, or the like.
Other objects of my invention will appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location and relative arrangement of parts all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown in the accompanying drawin s, and finally pointed out in the appended c aims.
It is a common custom, where ships, bar es, boats, cars or the like are to be loaded or unloaded to or from a wharf, dock. storehouse, freight yard, shed or the like, to employ a hoist actuated by a winch or other means, to hoist the load, and a. block or pulley attached to a beam or upright through which a cable runs, also actuated by a winch or other means and which is attached to the load to pull the same to the desired point. It is also common to employ two hoists, the booms of which extend at approximately right an les to each other, one over the hatch of a siip, for instance, and the other over the wharf or dock; the one lifting the load from the hold of the ship, and the other transferring the same to the dock or wharf. The disadvantages of these methods as at present employed are evident. Two separately operated hoists are employed with limited scope of operation for each of them, making the work slow and inefiicient in that addi tional labor is required.
It is among the special purposes of my present invention to eliminate these and other objections, and to provide a double whip crane of novel and useful structure. In carrying out my purposes, I propose to employ two booms or hoists projecting in opposite directions from a common overhead support which is mounted, for example, on a wharf or dock, said booms being mounted upon horizontal axes for independent vertical movement or swing in the same vertical plane, and capable of sidewise movement or swing in unison with each other about a common vertical axis. These features afford a. convenient structure for use, for instance, in loading or unloading boats, where the boat is so relatively positioned that the hatch is not at right angles with the crane tower or sup- )ort on the dock or wharf, and also if the atch should happen to come directly posite a su porting column or beam of tlie wharf shed The feature just referred to also allows the advanta e of a choice as to where the load that is oing handled shall be placed on the dock or wharf after its removal from the boat.

In carrying out my invention I propose toemploy two whip hoists working Over an upper or main boom 1, and a lower or auxiliary boom 2, said booms being provided with a pulley 3, 4. respectively at their respective outer or free ends, and each boom i attached to the front portion of the supthereon by the load diagrammatically indicated at 10, and the weight and overhang of the main boom 1. Suitably mounted on the crane frame 5 are hoisting devices 11, 12 and 13. These may be of any desirable or suitable character and operated manually or by motors suitably controlled from a convenient station. I prefer to employ motors, as shown, driving, through suitable gearing, the drums 14, 15 and 16, respec-v tively which wind and unwind the ropes controlled thereby. The actuating device or motor 12 and drum15 control the vertical movement of the main boom 1 through the rope 18 which passes over one of a pair of pulleys or sheaves 17 suitably journaled near the upper end of the body frame of the tower 6, over one of a pair of pulleys or sheaves 20 in the tower head 7, over a pulley or sheave 19, suitably journaled in the frame work of the main boom 1 near its outer free end, and back to the tower head 7 or other convenient point where it is securely fastened in any suitable manner. The actuating device or motor 11 and the drum 14 con trol the vertical movement of the load 10 by means of the rope or whip 21 which passes over the remaining pulleys or sheaves of the pair indicated at 17'and 20, over the pulley or sheave 3 at the free end of the boom 1, and terminates in a hook or other device 22, for engaging and supporting the load 10. Theactuating device or motor 13 and drum 16 control the horizontal movement of the load 10 by means of the rope 23, which passes over the sheave or pulley 24, which is suitably journaled in the framework of the lower or auxiliary boom 2, over the sheave or pulley 4, at the end of said boom, and terminates in a suitable connection 25 to the hoist rope 21 of main boom 1. The attaching device 25 may be of any suitable construction, but I have found it advantageous to employ, as shown, an eye collar consisting of a casting provided with an opening or collar through which the rope 21 may pass, and an eye or hole by means of which the rope 23 is attached to the device. My invention, however, is not to be limited in this respect, for it is obvious that the device 25 may be eliminated entirely, and the rope 23 merely tied or otherwise secured to the hook 22, or the rope 21, adjacent the hook 22.

Suitably supported at the front end of the crane frame 5 is a frame 26, which is pass through transverse beams or members 28 of the crane frame 5. Suitably attached to the upper portion of the front end of frame 5, is a transversely extending beam 32. This beam may be attached to the frame in any suitable, convenient or well known manner. This beam supports in a suspended position the bearings 33 for a worm shaft 34, which is held in suitable position to mesh with a segment rack 35. This rack is attached to the frame 26. The worm 34 may be actuated in any suitable manner, manually or otherwise. I have found it satisfactory and suflicient to actuate the worm manually, and I have shown a handle and crank 37 for that purpose, but my invention in, its broadest scope is not to be limited in this respect.
From the apparatus above described it is evident that the turning of crank 37 and the shaft 34, the'worm of the shaft meshing with the rack 35, compels the entire structure supported by the frame 26 to be rotated about the axis of the stud 27 in either direction, according to the direction of rotation of the shaft The booms 1 and 2 may be mounted to rock or swing vertically on the same or on different horizontal axes. I have found it sufficient to mount the two booms to swing vertically on a common shaft or axis 40,
suitably 'journaled in the frame 26, at its lower forward portion, asshown.
Any suitable means may be employed to secure'the vertical movement of the respective booms, and I have hereinbefore described and shown one means whereby the main boom 1 can be vertically rocked by the device 12 and the unwinding and winding up of the rope or cable 18 on drum 15. Likewise, any suitable means. may be employed to secure the independent vertical swing of the auxiliary boom 2. I have shown one arrangement for accomplishing this result wherein the frame of the boom is provided with a. projection 41 upon which is journaled a pulley or sheave 42 around which a rope, chain or other suitable cable Suitably journaled in a projection 39 of frame 26 is a shaft 44, see Fig. 3, upon which are mounted sheaves or pulleys 45 to rotate thereon and around which passes said cable 43.
The connection 43 may be actuated in any suitable or convenient manner. A simple arrangement is shown, but to which my 111- vention is not to be limited or restricted, whemin this connection 43, or the drum 4? over which it operates, is actuated by a gear 48, mounted on shaft 44, which meshes with a gear wheel 49 mounted on a shaft 50 which is also suitably iiournalcd in frame 26. This shaft 50 may )e rotated by an suitable or desired means, but I find it sufficient to emplov a crank and handle 51 on the shaft lit for manual operation. It is evident, however. that my invention is not to be limited in this respect.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the rotation of the shaft 2'10 and its associated. ear wheel secures the rotation of gear 4 and the consequent actuation. of connection 43, thereby lowering or raising the boom 2.
It is desirable to lock the boom 2 in the vertical position to which it may be swung. To accom lish this I mount on shaft 50 a ratchet wiecl 52 which is engaged by a pivoted pawl Z53 suitably attached to the transversely extending beam 31 of frame 26. I thus secure an efficient and well known load brake.
In view of the horizontal movement allowed the boom members 1 and 2, it is desirable to allow a similar horizontal swiveling movement of the )ulleys or sheaves 20 in the tower head I secure this by mountin the pulleys or sheaves 20 in a frame 6 which in turn is attached to the head 7 by means of a vertical pivot bolt 61 which allows swiveling or turning movement of the frame 00 about the vertical axis of the bolt.
In the foregoing I have described an arrangement and construction embodying my invention that is applicable for any purposes wherein a crane may be employed. In Fi 1 however. I have shown the application of my invention to a wharf, pier or dock. wherein the crane frame is provided with wheels 65 which run on the rails 66 which are mounted on the roof of a building such as a storehouse. pier shed. warehouse or the like. erected in close proximity to the edce of a water front or wharf dock 07. It will be seen that my invention allows the use of a single crane throughout the length of the pier or wharf. and permits. by means of the horizontal movement of the booms. choice in the location of the spot where the load is to be deposited. It is obvious. however. that my invention is not to be limited or restricted to a structure wherein the crane frame is mounted on the roof of a pier shed. as any other desired mounting or arrangement of support may be employed. It is also evident that the crane is applicable for use in loading or unloading cars, as indicated at 68, from a bar boat or the like at a water front.
I desired, and as shown. in the case where the hoisting cables are operated by power devices, an operators cab indicated at 70 may be suitably attached to the front end of the crane frame a and from which the power devices may be controlled.
It will be seen that I- have supplied a crane of simple construction, economical to manufacture, and efficient in operation, wherein due to the double whip arrangement. there is no swaying of the load or any lost motion in transferring the load from one place to another. and wherein the load may be easily and readily handled to or from any desued point on the dock or pier or hatch on a boat or car.
By etfccting the horizontal swinging movement of the frame 20 and the booms carried thereby through a worm gear connection the worm acts as a lock to hold the parts in their desired position of horizontal swing.
Having now set forth the objects and nature of my invention. and a construction embodying'the rinciples thereof. what I claim as new and useful and of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.-
1. In a crane. a crane frame. booms pivotally mounted thereon to swing independently in the same vertical )lane. a load onagmg device, and a load hoist for each 00m, each of said load hoists connected to said load engaging device.

4. In a crane. a crane frame. a main and an auxiliary boom pivotally mounted on said frame to swing independently in the same vertical plane. said booms extending in opposite directions from each other. a load engaging device and a load hoist associatcd with each boom. each of said hoists connected to said load engaging device and cooperating to handle the load.
5. In a crane. a movable crane frame. booms pivotally mounted thereon to swing in the same vertical plane, means for independently swinging said booms. a load onga ing device. a load hoist associated with eaci boom. and both connected to said load ill) engaging device and cooperating to handle the load, and means for operating said hoists.
6. In a crane, a crane frame, a carrying frame pivotally mounted to rock upon a vertical axis upon the crane frame, booms pivotally mounted upon the carrying frame, means for swinging said booms, a load engaging device, and a load hoist associated with each boom, each of said hoists connected to said load engaging device.
7. In a crane, a crane frame, a carrying frame pivotally mounted thereon to swing horizontally, booms pivotally mounted on said carrying frame to swing vertically in the same vertical plane, a load engaging device, and a load hoist associated with each boom, both of said load hoists connected to said load engaging device and cooperating to handle the load.
8. In a crane, acrane frame, a carrying frame pivotally supported thereon upon a vertical axis, means for rocking said frame about said axis, booms pivotally mounted on said carrying frame to independently swing vertically, means for vertically swinging said booms, a load engaging device, and a load hoist associated with each boom, both of said load hoists connected to said load engaging device.
9. In a crane, a crane frame, a carrying frame pivotally mounted thereon to swing horizontally and having a segment gear, a
shaft carried by the crane frame and having a worm arranged to mesh with said gear, and means for rotating said shaft, in combination with booms pivotally mounted on said carrying frame, means to swing said booms vertically, a load engaging device, and a load hoist associated with each boom, both of said load hoists connected to said load engaging device. 7
10. In a crane, a crane frame, a carrying frame pivotally mounted thereon to swing horizontally, and manually operated devices for swinging said frame, in combination with booms pivotally mounted on said carrying frame to swing vertically, a load engaging device, and a load hoist associated with each boom, both load hoists connected to said load engaging device.
11. In a crane, a crane frame, a main boom and an auxiliary boom pivotally mounted on said frame, devices for independently rocking said booms vertically, a load engaging device, and a hoist associated with each boom, each hoist connected to said load engaging device.
12. In a crane, a crane frame, a main boom pivotally mounted thereon, means for rocking saidboom vertically, an auxiliary boom also pivotally mounted on said crane frame, devices for swinging said auxiliary boom vertically, a load engaging device, and a hoist associated with each boom, said hoists both connected to said load engaging device cooperating to handle the load.
13. In a crane, acrane frame, a main boom pivotally mounted thereon, means for rocking said boom vertically, an auxiliary boom also pivotally mounted on said crane frame, devices for swinging said auxiliary boom vertically, said devices including means to hold said boom in the position to which it is swung, a load engaging device, and a hoist associated with each boom, both of said hoists connected to said load engag ing device.
14. In a crane, a crane frame, a carrying frame pivotally mounted to rock thereon on a vertical axis, a main boom pivotally suspended at one end from said carrying frame to rock in a vertical plane, an auxiliary boom also pivotally suspended at one end from said carrying frame to rock in a vertical plane,said booms extending in opposite directions from each other, means to independently rock said booms, a load engaging device, a hoist associated with each boom, and means for-operating the same, both of said holsts belng connected to sa1d load engagmg device and cooperating to handle the load.
