HAND-RAG AND TRE LIKE.
Speeication of Letters Patent. llatnited Feb. 22, 1916.
Application filed May 12, 1915. Serial No. 27,553.
To czZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK R. I-IoARD,v
a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand-Bags and the like, of which the follow-ing is a specilication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hand bags and the like, and pertains more particularly to the body construction of bags of the general type indicated.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a structure of bag in which great strength, longevity and wearing qualities are possessed, while at the same time not adding to the weight of the bag.
A further objectV of the invention is to provide a 'bag in which a fine mesh wire cloth is utilized as the base of the bag body structure, enabling the inside of the bag, as well as' the outside, to be finished in varying manners, and with different finishing materials, such for instance as leather, paper, canvas or straw, or other materials.
In the drawings-Figure l is a side elevation of the bag, partly broken away and in section. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a similar view on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, the body of the bag structure is formed of fine wire mesh fabric l which is shaped to conform to the outline which the bag is to possess. The bag body may be formed from a single piece of material l, or it may be formed of Separate pieces connected and shaped to .conform to the outline which the bag is to have. Secured to the outside of the wire fabric l is the nishing material 2 which latter may be canvas, leather, or leather imitation, paper, canvas, straw or any other suitable material suitable for the purpose, which material may be waterproofed, if desired. Similarly finishing material 3 may be secured tothe in* terior of the fabric l, and may be ofany desired character, such as canvas, leather,
- silk or other textilefabric,paper, chamois,
or straw.
O ne of the important advantages which the invention possesses is that of enabling the finishing materials, whether inside or outside `or both, to be sewed to the vmesh fabric, by
Vthe interstices of the fabric and contacting with both the inside and outside materials;
A further important advantage of the in` vention is that the mesh fabric, due to its resilient nature tends to always open the sides of the bag at the mouth thereof so that upon release of the usual catch or lock, the mouth of the bag is sprung open, so to speak. In addition the usual reinforcing pieces P and the usual mouth finishing plates M can be easily and effectively connected by stitching or riveting to the fabric and will be securely held against being pulled oif,`or disengaged, which latter is common to leather bags formed of thin material.v The wire fabric also reinforces the bag body structure, and imparts strength and maximum wearing property thereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- As a new article of manufacture, a bag composed of a body formedof fine metal wire mesh, inner and outer finishing facings 1 engaged with the mesh, and unitary fastening means to rigidly and permanently secure the facings to the wire mesh s0 that the wire mesh and both facings form a unitary structure, said fastening means extending through themeshes of the wire so as to rigidly and simultzmeouslyy connect the name tothisl speceaton in the presence of facngs to opposite sidesk of the Wire mesh, twosubscrbing Witnesses.l said bod bein@ so Sha. Ved that the mesh also w x v l acts to use the bodypad4 .the mouth thereof BREDERIQKR' EGARD' 5 to spring open and remain open when the ftnesses: Y
mouth is unfastened. ADA E. HAGERTY,
lx1-testimony whereof I have signed my" J. A. MILLER.
