Be it known that we, FERDINAND W. NI-
TARDY and HERBERT C. SCI-IAEFER, citizens vided with a channel or passage which is capable of diverting the drippingsfrom the mouth of the vessel away from; a determinate side of the same, for the purpose of preventing the liquidfrom smear ng and -obliterating the writing or printing on the face of a label attached to the vessel at its said side. d
The channel or passage is to this end disposed to receive the liquid dripping from the outer edge of the mouth of the bottle when the latter has been restored to an upright position after usage, and it is formed to conduct the liquid to a pointjor points remote from the labeled side of the vessel.
While the means provided for this purpose as shown in the above-mentioned application for patent, adequately performed their functions, it was found that in some cases the liquid drying on the sides of the bottle other than that to which the label was applied, produced an objectionable sticky coating, that in otherinstances the liquid flowing down the sides of the bottle soiled .the surface of the table or other article on which the bottle was supported, and that on bottles which carry more than one label, the label on one of its sides would be wetted and defaced, while that on the other side' BOTTLE:
downwardly along its sides in connection with the'firstmentioned channel to conduct the liquid along determinate courses to the bottom portion of the vessel.
Another object ofthe invention resides in providingmeans for retarding-or retaining dr ppings passing along the above-men: tioned courses, to prevent their flowing onto the surface on which the bottle isplaced.

The bottle shown in the drawings liasa passage or channel 2 to receive the liquid drip: ping from the rim 3 of its neck 4; at its sideat which the label 5 is attached. The channel is preferably produced by a ridge 6 formed on the shoulder 7 of the bottle betweenit's neck and its body-portion 8, and extending from a central point at the label-side of the vessel in opposite directions to points n the edge of the shoulder at the opposite sideof the same.

spacing the rittles in accordance with standard measurements of the contents of the bot tle, such as fluid ounces, and designating them approximately by figures or other characters, the riiiles may serve in addition to their other function, to indicate the amount of liquid contained in the vessel, or to measure a dose of medicine to be taken therefrom.
In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the channels 9 'at the edges of the body portion of the bottle, terminate at their lower ends in a transverse trough 12 formed by a groove in the side of the bottle which receives and retains the liquid flowing through the said channels, and thus prevents it from soiling the table or other surface on which the bottle is placed.
WV e desire it understood that the form and arrangement of the improvements shown and described in connection with a medicine bottle of rectangular section, may naturally be varied in accordance with the shape and construction of other, different vessels to which they are applied, within the spirit of our invention as defined in the following claims:
1. A container having an opening and a channel or passage positioned to receive liquid dripping from an edge of said opening, a groove in the body portion of the container for coneucting said liquid to the bot tom portion of the vessel, and transverse riflies in said groove for obstructing the downward flow of liquid.
2. A container having an opening, conductive means positioned to receive liquid dripping from an edge of said opening and adapted to conduit said drippings along a determinate course to the bottom portion of the container, and means forsobstructing the downward flow of liquid along said course;
3. A container of angular section having an opening, a shoulder between said opening and the body portion of the container, a channel or passage formed on said shoulder to receive liquid dripping from an edge of said opening, grooves formed in the body portion of the container along the edges of the same, defined by twoof its angles,-,in connection with opposite ends of said Chan-.- nel or passage, for conductingtliquid to the bottom portion of the container, and means in connection with said grooves for ob structing liquid flowing through the same.
