To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE M. HALLI- BURTON and SAMUEL L. MCBURNEY, citizens of-the United States, residing at Port Arthur, in the county of Jefferson and Stateof Texas, have invented a new and useful Brake-Controlling Mechanism for Railway- Cars, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to air brake ,controlling mechanism for use in connection with railway cars, one of the objects of the invention being to provide means whereby should one of the wheels of a car become derailed, the brakes will be applied automatically.
A further object is to provide mechanism of this character which can be applied readily to cars already in service, said mechanism being simple in construction and operating accurately should any one of the wheels of a car become derailed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de. scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has" been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a front elevation of the attachment in position. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on line A-B Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the valve shifting arm and adjacent parts.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference G designates a portion of a car body, P a portion of the line pipe of the air brake system of the car, X one of the car axles, and W the wheels thereon.
The attachment includes hangers 1 adapted to be secured to the car body, these hangers supporting a cross rod 2 on which opposed sleeves 3 and 4: are mounted for rotation. The inner ends of these sleeves 3 and 1 are cut away to form segmental tongues 5 and recesses 6, each tongue being extended through less than 180. Revolubly mounted on the rod 2 and between. the sleeves is a ring 6 from which extends an arm 7 having a segmental base Swhich fits within the recesses 6 in the sleeves 3 and 1 so that a swinging movement of arm 7 can be effected in either direction by the rotation of one of the sleeves 3 and 4-. A valve 9 is fitted 1n the pipe P and has a crank arm 10 to which the arm 7 is connected by a rod 10 so that when this arm is swung in one direc t1on, thevalve 9 will'be closed and when swung in the opposite direction, the valve will be opened.
Extending from each of the sleeves 3 and 4: is an arm 11 to which is secured a spring 12 which serves to hold the arm normally elevated. Each arm 11 has a depending hanger 13 pivoted thereto and carrying a split ring 14 which extends around the axle X at a point adjacent one ofthe wheels W.
It will be understood that should one of the wheels W become derailed, that end of the axle to which it is connected will drop and will cause the ring 14 to be pulled clownwardly, drawing through arm 11 so as to rotate the sleeve 3 or 4: from which the arm extends. Thus said sleeve will be rotated against the action of its spring 12 and the tongue 5 at the end of the sleeve will move against the base portion 8 of arm 7, thus causing said arm to swing on the rod 2 and amount of movement of base 8 about rod 2 under the action of one of the tongues 5 is permitted without said base operating the tongue 5 of the opposed sleeve.
What is claimed is: y
1. The combination with a car structure and a pipe of an air brake system, of a valve in said pipe, separately revoluble members supported under the car structure, means for transmitting motion from either of said members to the valve to place the valve in service application, and separate means operated by the dropping of either end of an axle of the car, for shifting one of said first mentioned means.
2. The combination with a car structure and a pipe of an air brake system, of a valve sitions, and means operated by the dropping 1 of-either end of an aXle of the car, for shifting one of said members to place the valve in service application.
3. The combination with a car structure and a pipe of an air brake system, of a rod 1 supported. under said structure, separate sleeves mounted for rotation thereon, an arm mounted for rotation on the rod and be tween the sleeves, a connection between the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressingthe Commissioner of Patents arm and the valve, cooperating means upon the arm and .the respective sleeves whereby the rotation of eithersleeve Will result in Washington, D10.
