To all whom may concern:
Be it lmown that I, SAMUEL F. Ha man, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Vending-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improyeinents in vending machines, and more particnlarly to such as are adapted to vend strips, tickets or stamps,-one object of the invention berng to provide simple and etlicient means for insuring the removal of a stamp or ticketfrom a. perforate strip accurately along the l ne of perforations and thus avoid possibility of tearing the stamps or tickets or theremoval of more than one at a time A further object is to so construct the machine that improper coins or tokens shall be prevented from reaching the trip devices of the vending means.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in elevation of a machine embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a sectional view; Fig. 3 is afront elevation, and Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are detail views.
1 represents a casing provided at its top with a coin inlet slot and in its front with a discharge slot for stamps, strips or tickets, Supported removably within the casing l is a frame 3 which carries the various parts of the mechanism of the device. This comprises a front plate 4 having a discharge opening 5, and in rear of said plate, several feed drums 6 are mounted on a suitable I shaft, said drums being built in a unitary strnctnre that they may be rotated simultaneously. Each drum is provided with teeth which so spaced that they will perforations in those portions of a w ich separate the stamps or tickets of it strip may be composed, so that a the dimes turned the strips will be Specification of Letters Patent.

10 secured to the front plate 4 adjacent to thevlower edge of the discharge opening 5, and smaller fingers 11 also project from the edge of this plate and project through the discharge opening in a manner to approach the drums between the teeth .7 and the heads of the drums. The front plate 4 is notched in its rear face at the upper and lower edges of the discharge opening, as at 12, for the accommodation of the teeth 7, and the lower wall of the discharge opening is beveled, as at 13. With such construction, when the drums are turned to project a stamp or tcket through the discharge opening, the peeling fingers will become disposed under the stamp or ticket strips and operate to peel the same from the drums and guide the stamps or tickets to be secured to the trough 10, by which latter they will be presented to the purchaser.
In order to insure the accurate severance of the stamps or tickets along the lines of perforations and to thus prevent tearing of the strip between lines of perforations, I provide a blade 14. This blade is secured to the front plate 4 of the frame, so as to depend somewhatbelow the upper edge of the discharge opening 5 and in front of the several drums; T blade is so formed, that each portion 15 thereof which extends across one of the drums, will have two inclined cutting or severing edges 16 which converge to a point 17 approximately in line with the center of the drum. The portions 15 also bulge slightly inwardly so that the point of meeting of the convergent cutting or severing edges will project somewhat. inwardly from the vertical plane of the front plate 4. With the severing means thus constructed, the convergent point 17 of the severing edges will engage the perforated portion of a strip centrally between the side edges of the lattor, and when the stamp or ticket is subjected to strain by the purchaser against the sever ing edges, the removal of the stamp or ticket along the line of perforations will be insured upper portion of the frame 4 and is provided with an arm 24: disposed under the COlIl inlet slot 25 in the upper end of the frame and in line with the coin in that slot in the top of the casing 1. The arm 24 has mounted in its free end, a small roller 26, which receives the edge of the coin andthus reduces fric- 'tional resistance when the coin is pushed down by the purchaser to operate the arm 24 for turning the shaft 23.
A depending bar 27 is secured to the inner end of the shaft 23 and to this bar, a spring actuated pawl 28 is pivotally attached and adapted to engage pins or teeth 29 onthe connected series of drums 6. The depending bar 27 is moved in one direction (when released) by the action of a spring 30 to impart feeding movement (through the pawl 28) to the feed drums. It will be observed that when a proper coin is forced through the coin inlet slot 25, pressure of said coin against the arm 24, will cause the shaft 23 to be turned and the bar 27 to be swung laterally against the resistance of the spring 30,
when the pawl 28 will be caused to engage one of the pins or teeth 29 on the series of drums. The parts will be held in these positions, by the engagement of a trip lug 31 on a trip shaft 32, with one of the pins 29 on the series of drums,said lug being held normally in position to engage one of said pins 29, by the action of a spring 33 coiled on the shaft 32 and secured at its respective ends to the framel and a block 34 secured to said shaft. Retrograde rotation of the feed drum will be prevented by the engagement of a weighted dog 35 with one of the pins 29. After a coin has passed the arm 24, it will enter a coin chute 36, by means of which it will be directed to a trip arm 37 projecting from the block 34 on the trip shaft 32 and passing transversely across said coin chute. The coin chute is disposed in a slightly inclined position and is provided in one wall with an opening 38 which is slightly less in diameter than a proper coin. With such construction, if a coin or token having a less diameter than the proper coin to operate the machine, be entered into the inclined coin chute, it will fall out through the opening 38 in the Wall of the chute, and thus be prevented from reaching the trip devices.
The vending means having been set by the introduction of a coin as above described, said coin will descend through the chute 36 taneously, orto presentone or more stamps or tickets and a coupon or other device, to I the customer, when the machine is operated with a coin of a predetermined value.
Slight changes might be made in the details of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a vending machine, the combination with a frame plate having a discharge slot and feeding means in rear of said frame plate, of a trough projecting outwardly from the frame plate below the discharge slot and provided at its inner edge with peeling fingers projecting inwardly through said slot and cooperating with the feeding means, and a blade secured to the outer face of the frame plate and overhanging said discharge slot.
2. In a vending machine, the combination with a frame having a discharge opening, and a feed drum in rear of said opening, said drum having a central peripheral groove and pins between said groove and the ends of the drum, of a plate secured to said frame and having a peeler finger projecting through the discharge opening and into the central peripheral groove of the drum, said plate also having shorter peeler fingers projecting through the discharge opening and having their free ends disposed approximately between the peripheral pins on the drum and the ends of the drum.
3. In a vending machine, the combination with a frame provided with a discharge opening, and feeding means behind said opening, of a blade secured to the frame and having a portion overhanging said opening, the overhanging portion of the blade being bulged inwardly and having lower converging edges.
4. In a vending machine, the combination with a frame having a discharge opening, and a feed drum behind said opening, of a blade secured to the frame and having an inwardly bulged portion pr vided with lower divergent edges, the meeting point of said edges being located in front of and centrally between the ends of said drum.
