of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrubbing and lVIopping Devices, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to devices for scrub bing and mopping floors and the like and also to the wringing of the mopping device.

The various objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter and in part will be obvious herefrom.

The invention consists in the novel parts, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.

The accompanying drawings, herein referred to and constituting a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention and together with the description serve to explain the principles thereof.

Of the drawings: Figure l is a central longitudinal section through the device substantially on the line A-B of Fig. 3; Fig. 2 is a central section, at right angles to their position in Fig. 1 of the mop holding and moving mechanism; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of the device; Fig. 4 is a detail of the spring mounting for the rollers; Fig. 5'is a fragmentary detail of the mop holding device in closed position; and Fig. 6 is a similar view to Fig. 5 but showing the device open.

Referring by way of example to the exemplified embodiment of the drawings, the scrubbing device is shown with a back 1 and with bristles 2, embedded therein in the usual manner. The device is centrally apertured at 3 and through this aperture a sponge or other moisture absorbing instrumentality is projected and retracted. Mounted in the space or aperture 3 are the wringing means comprising in the embodied form cooperating spring pressed rollers 4 and 5. The rollers 4 and 5 are journaled in supporting bracket plates 6 and 7, which plates are angled and are firmly attached to the back 1 of the scrubbing brush by suitable means such as screws 8 and 9. In the downwardly projecting vertical portions 10 and 11, respectively, of the plates 8 and 9 are the bearings for the rollers 4 and 5. As embodied, the pintles 12 and 13 of the roller 5 are mounted in stationary bearings in the plates 10 and 11, while the roller 4 is yieldingly mounted so as to produce or effect the die 26. At its lower end the rod 29 proper yielding wringing or squeezing acin the plates 10 and 11, respectively, and are acted upon by suitable spring means. In the embodied form of such spring means are employed spiral springs 18 and 19 under.

tension and engaging respectively the pintles 14' and 15, and also engaging pins 20 and 21 fixed to the plates 10 and 11. Thus the rollers 4 and 5 are yieldingly impelled toward each other to provide the requisite wringing pressure upon the sponge as it passes therethrough.

A suitable handle is provided for the device, and in accordance with one feature of the invention the handleis detachable and also is pivotally connected to the brush. As embodied lugs or ears 22 and 23 are formed, respectively, upon. the plates 6 and 7, and are apertured to curved ends of a bail 24-. At its central part the bail 24 has an internally screw threaded socket 25 into which the handle 26 is screwed.

In the embodied form of means for holding the sponge and drawing it through the rollers, a grip or other holding device 27 is receive the hooked or slidable along the handle 26, and has connected thereto by suitable means as a pin 28, a rod 29, which rod extends longitudinally within an internal aperture of the hanhas jaws 30 for receiving and holdingthe sponge 31. The jaws 30 may be of suitable form, but are preferably of spring metal bent and shaped to have the requisite spring action and to provide suitable gripping jaws for the sponge. The jaw plates 32 and 33 are pressed together by suitable means such as a wing bolt 40 passing through an aperture 34 in the jaw plate 32 and having screw threaded engagement as at 35 with the jaw plate 33. i

Means are provided in accordance with other pintle of the roller 4 thus pushing the roller away in parallel relation to the fixed rollers.

It will be understood that the device is of very simple, substantial and economical structure with an arrangement and constructionof parts adapted to withstand heavy usage, and the action of moisture. It will be understood also that the device is rapidly and easily operable, and that the wringing is provided by the pulling action along the handle and may be effected without stooping from an erect or nearly erect position.

The invention is not limited to the specific constructions shown in the exemplified embodiments, but changes may be made therein within the scope of the accompanying claims, without departing from the principles of the invention or sacrificing its chief advantages.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A scrubber and mopper including in combination an internally apertured scrubbing brush, a handle therefor, wringing means mounted on. the brush, a mapper, and means mounted on said handle for moving the mopper through the wringing means.
