To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER E. HAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing :tt Springeld, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strainers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
M invention relates `to strainers and more particularly to strainers having a movable strainer element with a valve therefor and the object of my invention is to provide improved means for moving said parts.
My invention consists in providing means operated by Huid pressure to open and close the valve and to move the strainer` element from straining to cleaning and from cleaning to straining position.
The improvement may be applied t0 a strainer having a single strainer element but is more` particularly designed for use in strainers having a plurality of strainer elements whereby any one of said elements may be moved from straining to cleaning position.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists of the constructions and combinations hereinafter described andset forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specication Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of astrainer embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view partly in section, the section being taken on y the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged view showing the means for moving the valve and strainer element; Fig. 5 is a fragment of a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a cross-section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4 and Fig. 7 shows the exhaust from the piston cylinder discharging outside the casing.

An annular valve 22 is provided for each of the openings and is seated when in open position on the partition 5 by a pro]ecting flange 23 and when moved to closed position is seated against a ring 24 in the extension 11 of the casing. Said Yvalves are also provided with inwardly pro- Jecting flanges 25 which project under the rings 21 of the strainer cylinders so that' when said cylinders are in straining position the yalves will be held to their seats on the partition 5.
Each of the strainer cylinders is provided with a centrally disposed piston cylinder 26 screw-threaded at its lower end `to a disk 17 within ay recess of said disk and the upper end is closed by a cap 27 provided with a stufling boX 28. The casing has enlarged recessed portions 29 beneath each of the strainer cylinders in which there are seated hollow plugs 30 having ports 31 and 32: and pistons 33 in the piston cylinders 26 are secured to the casing by tubes 34 screwthreaded within said recessed portions 29 against the plugs 30. Shafts or spindles 35 projecting through the piston cylinders 26 and tubes 34 are provided with grooves 36 and 37 which with the tubes 34 form passages that register with the ports 31 and 32 of the plugs 30. The passages 36 open within the piston cylinders on the upper lside of the pistons 33 and the passages 37 through ports in the tubes 34 to the under side of y said pistons.

The upper end of each of the shafts or spindles arefmade angular and lit correspondingly shaped recesses in stems 43 which project through openings shown as taking fluid pressure on the under side of the piston and exhausting from the upper side thereof whereby said element is forced to its lowest position, the annular valve falling with it and being held in open position by the ring 21 engaging the flange 25; and the upper strainer element in said figure 1s shown as taking fluid pressure on the upper side of the piston and exhausting from the lower side whereby said element is forced to its uppermost position carrying with it the annular valve to closed position. To raise the lower strainer element turn the shaft or spindle, by its handle, half around and the passage 36 will admit fluid pressure to the upper side of the piston and the passage 37 will exhaust from the lower side thereof; and to lower the upper strainer element give its spindle a half turn and the passage 37 will admit fluid pressure to the lower side of its piston and the passage 36 will exhaust from the upper side thereof. To meet conditions of pressure of the liquid being strained and the character of the pressure medium employed for operating the piston cylinders, the exhaust from the piston cylinders may be discharged into the straining chamber as above described or it `may be discharged outside the casing through openings 42a as shown in Fig. 7
Means are preferably provided to hold the strainer elements in their upper or cleaning position independent of the fluid pressure and such means will now be described. Rings 47 having cogs 48 are seated on the upper side of the partition 5 and coni fined in place by raised portions 49 of said partition and projections 50 from. the casing. Cams 51 having shafts 52 journaled in openings through the partition 5 are held in place by nuts 53 and pinions 54 are fixed on said shafts and adapted to mesh with the cogs 48 of the rings 47. One of the cam shafts for each strainer element has an eX- tension 55 projecting through a stuiiing box in the casing and is provided with a handle 56 which by turning half around will opcrate the cams to turn them in and out of engagement with the under side of the disks 17. It will be noted that the cams 51 have reduced portions 57 which permits them to be turned out of engagement with the disks and that When turned into engagement the inclined cam-way tightens and holds the disks and annular valves in closed position.
' It will be seen that when a strainer element is in its uppermost position and its valve is closed the cap 13 of its cleaning chamber can be opened and the strainer element removed Without interrupting the. iiow of the liquid through the other strainer elements.
Steam, air or Water may be` employed to operate the piston cylinders and the term Huid pressure is used to cover these mediums.
Various modifications may be made in the form and arrangement of the parts Without departing from the principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention I claim 1.A The combination of a casing, a movable strainer element therein having a cylinder within said element closed at its respective ends and a piston in said cylinder having a connection extending through an opening in one of said ends and secured to said casing, said piston and connection cooperating with said cylinder to guide said strainer element in its movement, substantially as described.

The combination of a casing, a movable strainer element therein having a cylinder Within said element closed at its respective ends, a piston in said cylinder having a connection extending through an opening in one of said ends and secured to said casing, said piston and connection cooperating with said cylinder to guide said strainer element in its movement and means to admit a motive agent through said connection to act upon said piston and cylinder to cause said movement, substantially as described. The combination of a casing, a movable strainer element therein having a cylinder Within'said element closed at its respective ends, a piston in said cylinder having a connection extending through an opening in one of said ends and secured to said casing, said piston and connectioncooperating with said cylinder to guide said strainer element 'in its movement, means to admit a motive agent through said connection to act upon said piston and cylinder to cause said movement and a control for said` means adapted to be manipulated from outside of said casing, substantially as de the same from outsideof said casin'g, sub

5. The combination of a casing, a perfo,- rated cylindrical strainer element, a valve disk formin the base of said element and having a cy inder projecting therein closed at its respective ends, a piston in said cylinder having a connection extending through an opening in one of said ends and secured to said casing, said piston and connection co-l operating With said cylinder to guide said strainer element and valve disk in their movement, means to admit a motive agent through said connection -to act upon said piston and cylinder to cause said movement,
devices independent of said motive agent means arranged to be operated from outside said casing to tighten and hold said strainer element and valve disk in one position and a control for said motive agent means adapted to be manipulated fromfoutside said casing, substantially as described.
