IMPROVEMENT IN PACKING-BOXES.

Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,061, dated July 18, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. FosTER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,

have invented a new and useful Improvement in Packing-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the g art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawing forming part of this specification, in Whichv Figure l is an end view of a packing-box embodying my improvement; and Fig. 2 is avertical longitudinal section, showing those parts which are at the right hand of the line a' x, drawn vertically'through Fig. l.

Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both gures of the drawing.

My invention relates to that class of boxes used in packing merchandise for transportation; and has, for its object to provide a more durable box, and at less cost, than those now made and used; and the improvement consists in the detail construction thereof, which will be more fully understood from the following description:

In the drawing, A and A represent the rails, and B B the stiles, forming the frame of the ends of the box, which I usually so form as to allow the ends of the rails to butt against the inner sides of the stiles, as shown in Fig. 1. Firmly secured to the inner sides of said stiles is a system of cleats, C, the inner edges of which are rabbeted to receive the panel D, as shown in Fig. 2. E is a system of cleats, which is lirmly nailed to the sides or edges of the stiles, and is also rabbeted upon their inner edges to receive panels F, which are also firmly nailed to the edges of the stiles, thus forming the sides of the box. G is a system of cleats, which is firmly nailed to the lower edge of rail A', and is grooved to receive the edges of panels H, as shown in Fig. 1, the said panels being rabbeted on their edge to admit of the same, thus forming the bottom of the box. J is the cover, which may be made plain, as shown, or may be made in the same form and manner as the bottom or sides, as desired.

By the manufacture of a packing-box as described all narrow strips of lumber which would otherwise be considered as useless, and thrown away, can be made and used for the cleats; the respective panels can be and are made from ordinary lumber, split through the center, thereby making a great saving of material, and, bythe use of the cleats securing the panels, the requisite strength is obtained, at the same time making the box less than the ordinary weight of the packing-boxes in common use, and is more easily handled.

Having thus described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As a new article of manufacture, a packingbox, the sides, ends, and bottom of which are composed of a series of panels, secured by cleats rabbeted upon their inner edges, substantially as and for the purpose described.
