BUILDING oonsTnUcTIonj' I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1,1916.
Application filed December 29, 1913. .Serial No. 809,370.
Our invention is an improvement in.
building construction, and'has for its obv ject to provide a new and improved form of anchor and tie for connecting an ornas mental facing to a building of brick, stone, cement, or the like, of simple construction and low cost, yet efficient for the purpose. In the drawings :Figure 1 is a partial section of a building showing an embodiment of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing another embodiment of the invention. I
- In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 1, the anchor and tie is shown in connection with the wall 1 of a bulldlng,
formed from a strip of metal of suitable width and cross section, the body portion of which is doubled upon itself to form an arch 3, and near the ends of the strip the metal is given a quarter turn as shown at 4, so that when the said'ends are crossed as shown at 5, they will lie flat upon each other. Near its ends the strip is again given a quarter turn in the reverse direction as shown at 6, and the extremities of the strip are bent at a right angle to the strip, to form lugs 7, 7 and 8. A cavity or recess 9 is hollowed or cut out in the wall of the building, and the arch 3 is arranged within the said cavity or recess. The portions 1 of the tie after they are crossed at 5, diverge from each other, and the said portions are embedded in a layer '10 of plastic material capable of hardening,
as for instance, cement, concrete or the like. The facing is formed-of separate blocks, and the portion 6 at one end of the strip is passed along the joint between two blocks.
- the ends of the strip are again given a quarter turnv 1n the reverse direction as shown at p'osite directions, are engaged with notches, grooves, or recesses 11 and 12 in the adja cent edges of adjacent blocks. Theportion of the notches or recesses 11, 12 and let not filled by the lugs 7, 7 and 8 is filled with plastic material as shown atl3, the saidmaterial being arranged within the notches or recesses. It will be noted that the rear or inner walls of the notches or grooves 11 and 12 are inalinement and in the same plane, while the frontor outer walls extend atan obtuse angle. The block having the notch 11 is also recessed as shown at 1 1 to receive the locking. lug 8, the-recess being inclined as shown to provide a hold for the lug. It will be understood that either notches of a length to receive a lug or groove extending. the full length of the block may be used for engagement by the lugs. It will be evident that the anchors and ties may be arranged at any desired spacing, in order to properly hold the blocks of the facing. Each block mayhave one or more anchors and ties connected therewith.
In the construction. shown in Fig. 2, the wall 1 has the recess or cavity 9*, and the facing 2 is provided with inclined recesses wand 16, the said recessincliningin'opposi-te directions as shown. The anchor and tie is formed fro-Ina strip bent upon itself to form an arch 3 which is received within the cavity 9 and anchored in the cavity by the filling 10 of plastic material capable of hardening, the said filling being arranged between the Wall and the ornamental facing. The ends of thestrip are given a quarter turn as shown at 1, and are crossed as shown at 5 in the same manner as the tie. shown in Fig. 1. Beyond the portions 4? 6 and each end of the strip has a locking lug 7 b and 8 respectively, the said lugs being at right angles to the body of the strip.
Each of the notches 15 and 16 for receiving 100 The construction shown in -Fig. 2 is e'spe cially adapted for locking blocks intermedi- 1,05
ate their edges, because of the fact that the locking lugs engage the facing atthe rear and notat the edges.
The notches or recesses 11, 12, 15, 16, may
b g ooves, extending longitudinally of the 110' edges of the facing blocks to permit lateral adjustment of the tie. This arrangement is shown in our co-pending application, Serial No. 783,985. When the said recesses are grooved it will be evident that the anchor and tie may be arranged at any portion of the block, either at the center or near the end.
With any of the anchors and ties in place, the facing is held firmly in its proper position with respect to the wall, and when the filling of plastic material has hardened, the tie cannot be disengaged.
In the construction of Figs. 1 and 2, the arch oi the tie forms a firm lock, since with this construction the plastic material is within the arch.
It will be understood that each of the four edges of the facing blocks maybe grooved. the full length of the said edge and as many anchors may be used at each edge of each block as may be found necessary or desirable.
lVe claim 1. The combination with the wall and the facing composed of separate elements, of means for holding the facing to the wall, said means comprising an anchor and tie consisting of a strip of metal doubled upon itself to form an arch intermediate the ends thereof, the ends of the strip being crossed upon each other and the material of the strip being given a quarter turn at the crossing to permit the ends to lie fiat upon each other, each extremity of the strip being bent a quarter turn in the reverse direction and having a locking lug arranged at an angle to the body of the strip, the locking lugs extending toward each other, the facing having grooves or recesses for receiving the locking lugs, the wall having a cavity for receiving the arch and a filling of plastic material capable of hardening arranged between the wall and the facing and filling the recesses and grooves.
2. The combination with the wall and the facing composed of separate elements, of means for holding the facing to the wall, said means comprising an anchor and tie consisting of a strip of metal doubled upon itself to form an arch intermediate the ends thereof, the ends of the strip being crossed upon each other and the material of the strip being given a quarter turn at the crossing to permit the ends to lie flat upon each other, each extremity of the strip being bent a quarter turn in the reverse direction and having .a locking lug arranged at anangle to the body of the strip, the locking lugs eX tending toward each other, the facing having recesses for engagement by the lugs, and the wall having a recess for receiving the bod y ARTHUR B.
