To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN W. GROVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Razors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in attachments for razors, proposing an attachment for the purpose of applying liquid medicament or healing solution to the face during the operation of shaving.

The object of the invention is to provide an attachment for the purposes stated which shall be simple in its structural nature, inexpensive, readily applicable to any existing type of razor, and highly efficient for the purposes in view.

The invention, briefly stated, comprises a plate or similar element provided with means for its attachment in spaced relation to a razor blade and employed to confine an absorbent pad of cotton or felt which is dipped in the liquid medicament or healing solution and which applies said medicament or solution to the face in connection with the operation of shaving.

An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a Gillette razor with the improved attachment fitted thereon; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the razor, showing the attachment in section; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the attachment as designed for'Gillette razors; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the blade, holder and guard of a Gillette razor, showing the present attachment in operative relation; Fig. 5 is an elevation of a razor blade of ordinary construction to which a suitable form of the attachment is applied; and Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view of the razor blade and attachment shown in Fig. 5.

The attachment consists of a plate 1 which, when applied to the Gillette razor or to razors of the Gillette type, is located adjacent the back A of such razor in spaced relation to said back and preferably has a curved cross-section conforming to the, ourfor applying the attachment may be provided. Preferably, however, the plate 1 has at its ends spring fingers 2 provided at their inner sides with lugs 3 which engage under the guard B of a Gillette blade and thereby secure the attachment in position. The spring fingers 2 are provided at their outer sides with other lugs 4 which serve as finger pieces to permit the ready manipulation of the fingers 2 to effect their engagement with and disengagement from the guard B. The length of the fingers 2 is selected whereby the plate 1 will be suitably spaced from the back A. It is contemplated that a space of about one-eighth of an inch in width shall intervene between the plate 1 and the back A. The said space is taken up by a filler or pad 5 of cotton, felt, or other absorbent material suitable for the purposes in view. In applying the attachment, the pad 5 is first positioned against one side of the plate 1 and thereafter the plate 1 is secured to the razor by engaging its spring fingers 2 with the guard B in the manner stated, the pad beingconfined with reasonable security between said plate and the back A. In connection with the operation of shaving, the razor is dipped into the liquid medicament or healing solution and held sufficiently long to insure the measurably thorough saturation of the pad 5. When the razor is used for shaving purposes, the angle at which it is held insures that the exposed edge of the pad 5 shall contact with the skin in the rear of the cutting edge of the razor. In this way, liquid medicament or healing solution is applied to the face continuously during the shaving operation, and inasmuch as the razor is held with considerable pressure against the face and the skin is drawn taut during the shaving operation, the liquid 'medicament or healing solution is efiiciently rubbed into the skin by the pad.

The size of the pad is such that it can absorb a. suitable quantity of the liquid medicament or. healing solution to render it unnecessary to repeatedly dip said razor in the solution during a single shaving operation. The pad projects very slightly bevyond the side edges of theplate 1 and eX- cept for such projecting portions is entirely covered by said plate, the latter thus not only confining the pad in its proper position, but preventing undue evaporation of the liquid medicament or healing solution.

In Figs. 5 and 6, the attachment is shown in a form adapted for razor blades of ordinary construction. In this case, the plate 1, which, as in the preceding instance, has a length equal to the length of the cutting edge of the blade, is provided along its upper edge with in-turned spring fingers 2 which engage over the back edge of the razor andbear frictionally against the side of the razor opposite that which is adjoined by the plate 1. The plate 1 is of less depth than the blade and preferably has a crosssectional curvature opposite to the surface curvature of that side of the blade which it adjoins in order that the space intervening between said plate and the blade may be of less width adjacent the edge of said plate than adjacent the center thereof, whereby'the pad 5 will be securely held in position, as will be obvious .from Fig. 6. The device may be made in forms which will be appropriate for its attachment to the various types, of razors commonly employed and may be readily fitted to and removed from such razors. Its use in no way interferes with the efliciency of the shaving operation,. but, on the other hand, shortens the operation by eliminating the necessity for going over the face, after the shaving has been completed, with a liquid medicament or healing solution for the purpose of. soothing the skin. Furthermore, in view of the fact that the liquid medicament or healing solution is applied to the face during the shaving operation under considerable pressure and while the skin is drawn taut, the application of such solution by the use of the present attachment is more eflicient than is the case where such solution is merely applied to the face with the hands as is customary.

Having fully described my invention, I claim 1. The combination with'a razor blade of an attachment therefor comprising a plate for confining an absorbent pad in a position whereby a longitudinal edge of said pad will adjoin the cutting edge of the razor blade along a line in the rear of said blade and means carried by said plate for holding 'it in spaced relation to that side of the razor blade which is adjoined by said pad.

The combination with a razor blade of an attachment therefor comprising a plate for confining an absorbent pad in a position whereby a longitudinal edge of said pad will adjoin the cutting edge of the razor blade along a line in the rear of said blade" and spring fingers carried by said plate for holding it in relation to the razor blade. 3. The combination with a razor blade of an attachment therefor comprising a plate for confining an absorbent pad in a position whereby a longitudinal edge of said pad will adjoin the cutting edge of the razor blade along a line in the rear of said blade, means carried by said plate for holding it in relation to the razor blade, and an absorbent pad confined under said plate and covered by said plate except for an operative edge portion which projects slightly beyond the plate.

4. The combination with a razor blade of an attachment therefor comprising a plate for confining an absorbent pad in a position whereby a longitudinal edge of said pad will adjoin the cutting edge of the razor blade along a line in the rear of said blade, spring fingers carried by said plate for holding it in relation to the razor blade, and an absorbent pad confined under said plate and covered by said plate except for an operative edge portion which projects slightly beyond the plate.
