To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CrIARLEs E. GIBERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at i-ilmonesson, in the county of Gloucester and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp- Burner Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lamp burners, and has for its object to provide a burner wherein a locking device is used to prevent accidental extinguishing of the light.
The object is to provide a burner of the above description which will be simple to operate and cheap to manufacture, and with the above and other'objects in view, I will more fully describe my invention in the following specification:
Referring to the drawings,-Figure 1 is an inverted view of a lamp burner showing my device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the locking device.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a burner of the usual construction; 2 is a shaft journaled in the burner which is adapted to control the wick, and 3 is the usual flange in the construction of lamp burners. A strap, preferably formed from a strip of resilient sheet metal, is bent centrally to define a U-shaped shaft receiving loop 5 and the end portions thereof are extended divergently upward and engage under the flange 3 for retaining the strap in operative position. The U-shaped member 5 is provided with apertures 6 through which the pin 8 of the locking device, generally indicated at 7, is adapted to pass. The shaft 2 is also provided with an aperture which is adapted to aline with the apertures in the U-shaped member 5 and when the lockin g device 7 is in place the pin 8 is inserted through these apertures and prevents rotation of the shaft.
The locking device consists of a single piece of wire which is bent to form the loop 9 intermediate its length, one end of which extends outwardly therefrom, and forms the pin 8, the other end being bent, as shown at 10, and extends downwardly, as shown at 11 and thence substantially parallel to the pin oopies of this patent may S to within a short distance of its outer extremity at which point it is bent upwardly, as shown at 12, to form a substantially U- shaped member which serves to prevent the pm from becoming accidentally withdrawn.
In placing the attachment in position upon the lamp burner, the free ends of the strap are moved inwardly toward each other by pressure applied to the parallel portions of the U-shaped loop 5 with the thumb and forefinger of the operator, and said ends are subsequently engaged under the flange 3 of the burner. When the pressure exerted upon the parallel portions of the U-shaped member is released, the divergent ends 4; spring outwardly and engage the inner surface of the downwardly and inwardly turned flange 3. The shaft i is subsequently rotated to move its aperture into registration with the apertures 6 in the U-shaped loop 5 and the pin 8 is inserted in the alined apertures, thus locking the shaft 2 against rotat1on.
While in the foregoing I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I may change the arrangements of the several parts without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is The combination with a lamp burner including a wick controlling shaft, and a body plate provided at its periphery with a downwardly and inwardly extending annular flange, of a burner attachment including a strap formed of resilient sheet metal bent centrally to define a U-shaped loop to receive the said shaft and divergent end portions engaging under said peripheral flange, said shaft and U-shaped loop having apertures therein adapted to be moved into alinement by the rotation of the shaft, and a locking pin removably engaged in said alined apertures for locking said shaft against rotation in said U-shaped loop.
