Description

APPLICATION FILED FEB. 19, 1915- Patented Jan. 25, 1916.
\ INVENTOR Augusr H.

A TTOR/VEY AUGUST H. BASTIAN,
or HILLSDALE, OREGON.
LOCKING MEANS FOR CLAMPING-WRENCHES.
Application filed February 19, 1915'.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, AUGUST H. BASTIAN, a citizenv of the United States, and a resident of Hillsc ale, county of ldultnomah, and State of (Fregon, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Looking Means for Clampinglvrenches or the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tools such as a clamping wrench comprising two leverlike members hinged together, and provided with clampii'ig jaws, and it has for its object to combine with the extremities of such hinged members simple and efiicient means for locking them against retractive movement when the jaws have been clamped upon an object. To this end the locking means are adapted to lock the hinged members together at variable distances from each other so that in the use of my invention in con-' nection with a wrench, the jaws may be set to grip objects of varying dimensions.
My invention incidentally is especially designed to be used in combination with a par ticular wrench invented by me, and for which I have made a companion application for Letters Patent of the United States, filed February 19, 1915, under Serial. Number 9,437.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a sectional side elevation of a wrench to which my invention has been applied, the wrench shown being of that particular type heretofore contemporaneously invented by me, as above-mentioned. Fig. 2 is a top view of the movable member or lever of the wrench as Shown in Fig. 1, and illustrates the means provided for securing the locking-bolt in its retracted or inactive position. Fig. 3 is a partial top view of my wrench, with reference to its position in Fig. 1. Figs. 4t and 5 are respectively and in the order named, a top view and a side elevation of the pivot block of my wrench; and Fig. 6 is a crosssection on the line 66 of Fig. 1.
The wrench shown comprises a primary member a, made with an integral Wrenchhead 7), in which telescopes the shank 0 of a wrench-head c, which is adjusted to the wrench-head 7), by manipulating the screw cl, the outer end of which has a milled head (5'. The latter is journaled in a pivot block 6, having trunnions e, by which it is ournaled in the lever f, and the latter is pivoted at g to the bifurcated extension h, of the jaw-head b. The upper end of the lever f, is made bi- Specification of Letters Patent.

furcate as illustrated in Fig. 3 and as shown in Fig. 6. It has pins 9', 70, on which is fastened a spring 1, tending to separate the shank of the primary member a and the lever 7", as illustrated in Fig. 1. The extremity' of the shank of the primary member a, is made with a hole o, in which the extremity of the spring Z is loosely inserted as shown in Fig. 1.
The outer or free end of the lever f, is made with a head m, in which is reciprocably contained a locking bolt n, having a shank n, the extremity of which has a perforation in which is inserted the bent end 0, of the rod 0, which is made at its other end with a bent headed-portion 0, projecting through a slot 1" of the web 2'. On the head 0' of the rod 0 is fastened a plate 29, having a perforation 2) (see Fig. 2) so that such end of the plate 7) is adapted to be snapped over, and locked with, a stud 9, on the web 2', of the lever f. A coil-spring r is adapted to normally project the locking-bolt n. The latter is retracted by seizing the head 0 of the rod 0 and longitudinally moving the latter; and if the locking-bolt n is to be secured in its inactive or retracted position, then the perforated end of the plate 7) is lifted over and snapped on the stud-pin q. The free end of the lever f is further made with a cavity or socket s, in which to receive the lateral locking-head 6, provided on the free end of the shank of the primary membeer a. The locking-head is made flat, and of a width adapting it to be inserted in the socket s. This construction more firmly locks the free ends of the primary member and the lever together. The locking-head t has on its under or inner face a series of notches u, arranged in the form of serrations, so that the locking-head 25 may be inserted in the socket s, of the lever f, readily depressing the locking-bolt n in being so inserted, but will be held by the locking-bolt against return movement. In this way after the screw cl has been manipulated to approximately set the movable jaw 0 with respect to the jaw Z), then a tight grip is secured on the object to which the wrench is applied by moving the lever f, toward the shank of the primary member a, and locking the two members securely together by the means described.
The primary member and lever will also be locked together when the wrench is to be used like an ordinary wrench, for example,
When the jaws have been set to span a nut to be screwed off. WVhen the Wrench is not in use, the primary member and the lever may also be locked together by the means described; in such case the spring Z, in tending to separate the hinged member, causes the locking-head t, to pull on the locking 'with a serrated inner face, the corresponding end of the other member being made with a spring-controlled reciprocating locking-bolt adapted to engage With the serrated inner face of said locking-head, a rod fastened at one end to the locking-bolt, means for supporting the free end of said rod, such means adapted to permit the longitudinal movement of the rod for correspondingly moving the locking bolt, and means for engaging said free end of the rod, thereby to lock the locking-bolt in its retracted position. 7
2.. In combination With a tool comprising a primary member and a companion member hinged together, or" means for locking the tWo members together, such means consisting of a perpendicularly projecting-lockinghead provided on the free end of one member and arranged for being placed in contact With the corresponding end of the other member, said projecting head being made with a serrated inner face, the corresponding end of the other member being made with a spring-controlled reciprocating locking-bolt adapted to engage with the serrated inner face of said locking-head, a rod fastened at one end to thelocking-bolt, means for supporting the free end of said rod, such means ada oted to ermit the lon itudinal.
movement of the rod for correspondingly moving the locking-bolt, a latch-plate secured to the free end of said rod, one end oi such latch-plate being made With a perforation, and a stud located for being engaged by the perforated end of said latch-plate.
AUGUST H. BASTIAN.
