LOCK.
a ga ,41 Specification of Letters Patent. P m t 5 1 Application filed July 29, 1915. Serial No. 42,468.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, NORMAN B. HU'RD, a
citizen of the United States of America, re-
in many places, that the exit doors shall be entirely free to open while the building is being occupied, say by school children in session, or by audiences attending an entertainment. of door holding device is a spring latch, and since such a device will. hold a door closed, even though it does not constitute a dead lock, it is in such cases as above referred to,
essential to hold back the spring latch during such period or periods.- I am' aware, of course, that from a broad standpoint there is no invention in merely providing some device, or some means, for holding alatch back, and furthermore, I am aware-that such means have been common for many years,
therefore,.it should be understood that my present invention merely relates to the special means employed herein, which means, in its preferred form, may also perform other functions, as I shall make apparent.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a lock constructed to'embody my A Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, with one side of the lock case removed. Fi 3 is a similarview showing parts in a di erent position. Fig. 4 is a detail view, partly in section. Fig. 5 is another detail Figsf6 and 7 of a lock operating device.
1 represents the face plate of a look, through which projects aspring latch bolt 2, and, in this particularinstance also, what is termed acontroller 3, one side of'which is beveled after the manner of a latch, so that it may be repressedby the strike plate (not shown) when the door is being closed, and will be held repressed thereby while the door remains closed.
Since themost common form 4 represents a roll-back which may be operated byan inside knob spindle 5.
6 represents a companion roll back which is designed to be operated by an outside knob spindle 7. 8 is a lever pivoted at 9, and which is, designed to engage the end 10 of the latch bolt tail 11 for the purpose of retracting the latch. The lever 8 may be swung by turning either of the'roll backs 4 or 6, or it may be swung by any other well known means, for example, by means of an arm 12 proj ecting into a clearance recess 13 in the lower part of the lock case, so as to engage under the lever 8 as shown, whereby when the arm 12 is lifted, the latch will be withdrawn. Such devices are common in store door locks and in panic door bolts.
14 is the rotatable key "plug of a cylinder lock which carries the usual roll-back 15.
which is so arranged and associated with the lock thatthe latch may be retracted from the outside by means of a key independently of the roll-back'6. This operation is effected through the medium of a lever 16 pivoted at 17, one end of the lever engaging the part 10 of the latch, the other end being engageable by the roll back 15.
My present invention relates more particuiarly to thatpart of the apparatus which I-am about to describe, and which consists in the novel means for holding the latch bolt retracted Whenever desired. This means comprises a movable dog 18, which in this particular instance, is associated with the roll-back 6 for the outside knob spindle,
. retract the latch as shown in Fig. 3, the dog 18 may be moved into a position to engage said roll back and hold it in said latch retracting position, thereby holding the latch retracted. As shown in Fig. 3, the. lever 8 engages the part 10 of the latch bolt indirectly through the end of the lever 16, but this is immaterial. back stands in the position shown in Fig. 2, the dog 18 maybe moved into a notch 19, as shown, thus locking the outer. roll back and spindle 7 so that the door cannot be opened from. the outside excepting through the medium of a suitable key, op-
erating through the plug 1 1. The dog'18 is When the outer. roll is open, since it is insertible through ,the
faceplate 1 of the look. In the preferred construction, I employ ,a pin cylinden lock 21 which has the usual key-Way, shown in Fig. 1. The dog 18, in its preferred form,- is mounted to oscillate concentrically With the plug 21, but is not rigidly secured thereto. The end of the plug 21is provided with a shoulder 22, which is arranged to strike against a shoulder 23 on the dog 18, so as to swing said dog into or out of position to engage the roll back'6, thus, the one in charge 'of a building equipped with such lock on its exit doors, may have it within his power to put the lock in such condition that it cannot be operated from the outside save by a key; or he may put the lock in such condition that it will leave the door free to swing open. What I.claim .is 1. In a look, a case, a face plate, a spring latch projecting through said face plate, means including a roll-back for manually retracting the latch from one side of said case, and means operable by a key for engaging and disengaging said roll-back, said key operable means having a key-Wayopening through said face plate. 7
2. In a lock, a case, a face plate, a spring latch projecting through said face plate,
-means including a roll-back for manually retracting the latch from one side'of said case, and a key operable means for engaging and disengaging said roll-back, said key operable means-having a key-way opening through said face plate, said blocking means coeperating with said roll-back to block it in a plurality of positions.
3. In a look, a case, a face plate, a spring latch projecting through said face plate,
- means including a roll-back for manuallv retracting the latch from one side of said case, and means operable bv a key for engaging and disengaging said roll back, said key operable means having a key-way open ing through said face plate, said key-operable means comprising a rotatable cylinder able roll-backs for manually retracting said latch from either side of said case, and means arranged within the case and operable by a key to engage and disengage one of said roll-backs, said key operable means having a key way opening through said face plate. I
6. In alock, a case, a face plate, a spring latch projecting through said face plate, two manually operable independent means for of the case, and a separate means for retracting said latch from the in-door side of the case, a key-operable blocking device operating to prevent the retraction of the latch by'one of the said independent means, said key-operable device having a key-way open-v ing through said face plate, said key-operable d'eviee also cotiperating with said latch retracting means tracted.
7. In a look, a case, a face plate,'a bolt, bolt operating mechanism within the "case, a rotatable key-operable controlling means to hold the latch bolt rearranged to cooperate with the said operatretracting said latch from the out-door side ing mechanism within the case to lock and" unlock the same by the action of a key, and
having akey-way opening through said face I plate, and means to operate said bolt independently of the aforesaid operating mechanism when the latter is locked by said key.
