' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HEBER, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of New Martinsville, county of \Vetzel, and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to door checks, and specifically to a door check of pneumatic type.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a durable and efficient door check which is of extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive construction.
A further object is to provide a pneumatic door check composed of but few parts that are liable to become out of order, and the application of which requires no special skill.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construction, arrangement of parts and combinations of elements which will hereinafter be exemplified, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention applied to a door; Fig. 2 is a similar elevation, enlarged, a portion of the cylinder being shown in section; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same; and Fig. 4 is an elevation of the adjustable relief valve.
Referring to said drawings, in which like designating characters distinguish like parts throughout the several views1 indicates a bracket of yoke shape adapted to be rigidly mounted upon a door-casing 2 at a suitable point over a door 3. Pivotally connected to said bracket, as on a pivot pin 4 directed through the outer ends of the parallel members of said bracket, are the parallel members of a yoke 5 which is rigidly mounted on the end of a hollow cylinder 6, said pivotally connected members 1 and 5 constituting a hinge connection between said cylinder 6 and the door-casing 2. Reciprocable within said cvlinder is a plunger or piston 7 having a rod or stem 8 projecting therefrom through the closed rear end of said cylinder. The outer end of said stem is pivotally connected, as through the intermediacy of a flexi le yoke 9, to the upper end of an outwardly and upwardly curved bracket 10 which is stationarily mounted on the upper portion of the door 3 at a point located a suitably spaced distance from the rear, or hinged, edge of the latter.
The parts described are so proportioned and disposed with respect to each other that the piston occupies a position closely adacent to the front end of the cylinder when the door occupies closed position, and also that said piston has sufficient travel in said cylinder to permit the door to be swung to a wide-open position.
Connected to the cylinder at a suitable point, as by means of a hook 11 mounted on the cylinder, is one end of a retractile coil spring 12 the opposite end of which is suitably attached to therear end of the rod or stem 8, as through the intermediacy of a hook 13 fixed either on said stem or on the yoke 9. As is obvious, said spring serves to normally maintain the piston in a forwardly thrust position within the cylinder. Said spring is disposed substantially parallel to said cylinder and is located between the latter and the door casing, being substantially concealed by the cylinder and piston rod from the view of persons facing the door.
In practice, when the door 8 is swung open, the bracket 10 is carried outward and rearward therewith, and, consequently, the rear end of the cylinder is slightly swung therewith. This outward swinging movement is permitted by the hinge connection between the cylinder and the door casing. The rearward movement of said bracket acts to draw the piston rearward in the cylinder and to compress the air in the rear end of the latter, and also to place the spring under strong tension. Then, when the opened door is released, the spring assisted by the expanding air acts to rapidly swing the door toward its closed position. As the door approaches its closed position, the air in the front end of the cylinder becomes compressed by the inwardly moving piston and acts as a cushion for preventing the door from closing with great force, said cushion causing a slight rebound of the door before said closing position is reached. The air so compressed gradually exhausts from the cylinder past a suitable valve provided in the cylinder and allows the door under the influence of the spring to slowly close. Said valve is preferably constituted by a screw 14 which is adjustably mounted in an opening 15 provided in said cylinder at or adjacent to the front end of the latter. Said screw serves both as an inlet and exhaust valve, a shallow thread-intersecting groove 16 being provided therein through which air is admitted to and exhausts from'said cyl inder respectively with rearward and forward movements of said piston. By adjustment of said screw the rapidity at which the airlis exhausted from the cylinder may be regdated. 1
What is claimed is:
The-combination with a door and a doorcasing, of a door check comprising a cylinder, a yoke mounted upon the front end of I I said cylinder and having pivotal connection with a similar yoke mounted upon the doorcasing whereby is constituted a hinge connection between the cylinder and door-casing; a piston reciprocable within said cylinder, a rod extending from said piston through the rear end of said cylinder, an outstanding bracket carried by said door ad- Cc-pies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, 7
pivotally connecting the'outer end of said rod with said bracket, a retractile coil spring located substantially parallel to said cylinder and between the latter and the door casing so as to be partially concealed by the latter, said spring normally maintaining said piston in a forwardly thrust position in said cylinder, said spring having its ends detachably n1ounted, and a valve provided at the front end of said cylinder for permit ting air to enter and exhaust from the latter.
