WINDOW CONSTRUC-TON.
Specicaton of Letters Patent. Fatima Qd Jan 25, krijg@ Application led August 4, 1915. Serial No. 43,519. f
improvements in Vlfindow Construction, of
which the following is a specification.A
This invention relates to improvements in window construction and one of the objects of the saine is to improve and simplify the construction of windows and the manipulation of the sashes, so that the lower sash may be raised to a position adjacent to the upper sash and both sashes swung open to insure a larger quantity of' fresh air, particularly in a sleeping room, in lieu of sleeping porches.
A further object is to provide an irnproved structure of this character which may be readily adapted for use in all houses.
Other and further objects will appear from the following specification and claim when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, and in which;
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal view in section, of an improved window of this character vconstructed in accordance with the principles of this invention, and showing in dotted lines the parts in different positions. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the window and with both of the sashes closed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view showing the recess in the frame for receiving the projecting members on the lower sashv when the latter is swung open.
ln the drawing the window frame is provided with the vertical side walls 10, 10, and the sill 11, each of the sidewalls being provided in its upper portion with a longitudinal groove 12, and a. parting strip 13 is arranged in the lower portion of the frame below the groove 12.
An upper sash 141, is arranged in the frame and is secured in position by hinges 15, secured to the top of the sash and to the frame so that the sash will swing about a horizontal pivot, and so that the bottom of the sash will proj ect laterally beyond the frame. The ordinary and well known construction of spring catches 16, are connected with the sash and are adapted to enter openings 17, in the frame to secure the sash against swinging movement.
rlhe upper edges 18, of' the parting strips 13, terminate some distance short of the lower edge 19, of the upper sash, fora purpose to be hereinafter set forth.
To the top of the lower sash 20, are se cured members 21, which project from opposite sides thereof and enter the grooves 12, inthe vertical walls of the frame and are adapted to move in the grooves when the lower sash is raised and lowered, and the lower sash is held against adjustment by spring catches 22, similar to the catches 16, and which enter openings 23 in the frame.
A recess 24 is provided in each of the side walls of the frame and these recesses open into the grooves 12, in the respective side walls, and are adapted to receive the members 21, on the lower sash when the latter is raised and swung laterally. These recesses 211 are preferably arranged adjacent to the hinges or pivots of the upper sash adjacent to the top of' the frame. A
llVhen the sashes areclosed, the lower edge of the lower sash stands inside of the sill 11, and when it is desired to open the window, the catches of the lower sash are first released and the lower sash raised a few inches until the lower edge thereof clears the win-r dow sill 11, and can then be swung later ally, preferably into the room. IThe lower sash may then be lowered until the members 21, thereon abut and rest against the upper ends of' the parting strips 13. rihis position of the lower sash will leave a space between the top thereof and the lower edge of the upper sash. rThe catches 16 on the upper sash are then released and that sash may be thenswung laterally on its pivot or hinges 15, and may be maintained in its open position by means of the catches 16, engaging in openings in the end 2dr of a support 25, which is pivotally connected as at 2G, with the window frame, and which support when not in use, hangs against the frame. rlhe lower sash may then be raised causing the members 21, to slide in the grooves 12, until they stand opposite the recesses 24C. rlhe members may then be moved back into the recesses and the lower edge of the sash moved to swing the lower sash laterally on the pivot formed by the members and the recesses. This will cause the lower sash to stand close to, and substantially parallel with the upper sash and may be maintained in this position by means of the catches 22, detachably engaging a branch 27, connected with the support 25, preferably by a pivot 28, so that the branch 27, may fold with respeot to the support 25, when not in use.
What is olaimed as new is;
A window embodying a frame having its vertical side walls provided with a longitudinaly groove therein, a sash pivotally mounted in the upper portion of the frame, a lower sash, means connected with the lower sash and movable in the said grooves, the saidl means cooperating with the grooves to form a pivot about which the lower sash swings when the latter is moved above the sill, a stop Cooperating with the said means Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner f Patents,
to limit the lowering movement. ofthe sash, asupport cooperating with the frame and the upper sash for holding the latter in an open position, and means for holding the lower sash in open position and in close proximity to the upper sash.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name to this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
