cnnrAm-non Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1916.
1 Application filed April 27, 1915. Serial No. 24,220.
= to improve the construction of devices of the character referred to so as to be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, thoroughly reliable and efficient in use, and so designed that curtains oan. be easily and quickly hung. a
A further object of theinventio'n is the provision of a curtain rod which is hingedly mounted on the window frame at one end and is releasably fastened with respect to" the window at the opposite end, whereby the curtain can be swung bodily outwardly away from the window frame for various purposes, as cleaning the window panes, hanging the shade, etc.
Another object of the invention is the provision of improved means for effectively clamping the curtain or curtains between the rods so that there is no danger of the curtains sagging or becoming loose.
lVith such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a front view of the curtain rod showing the same supporting curtains; Fig. 2 is a plan view with portions in section; Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are enlarged transverse sections taken respectively on the lines 83, 4=4: and 5-5, Fig. 2; Figs. 6 and 7 are perspective views of the supporting brackets from the opposite ends of the curtain rod.
Referring to the drawing, A and B are the front and rear members of the curtain support or rod and between which are clamped the curtains C and C. The ends of the curtain rod are attached to the window frame D by brackets E and F into which engage respectively a pintle hook e and a stud f, both of which latter are carriecpl by the rear member B of the curtain ro 1 i The curtain rod is extensible in length, and therefore each member is composed of a central section 1, and' end sections 2 which slide longitudinally on the central sections, which are of channel-shape cross-section so as to provide guideways 3, Fig. 4:, for the slidable end sections 2. The two members A and are drawn together by screws, bolts or equivalent means 4 which extend through the end sections 2, and by tightening these bolts the curtains are clamped between the members A and B. To'insure tight clamping of the curtains at the inner contiguous edges one of the middle sections is provided with an adjustable plate 5, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, which cooperates with the middle section of the opposite member to tightly grip the curtains, the plate 5 being supported by screws or equivalent adjusting devices 6 which are threaded through the middle section 1 to which the plate is applied, and these screws have a swiveled connection 7 with the plate, so that by turning the screw the plate can be moved toward the middle section 1 of the other member. This other member is provided with a thickened or solid portion 8 so as to be flush with the inner surface of the end members 2, and also to form with the plate 5 the clamping means for gripping the inner edges of the curtains. In applying curtains to the supporting rod the members A and B thereof are separated and the upper ends of the curtain inserted between them. The fastening screws 4 are then attached and tightened. The screws 6 are then turned so as to cause the plate 5 to move toward the front member A and there by effectively clamp the curtains at the inner portions.
, As shown in Fig. 6, the bracket F is in the form of a socket having spring jaw members 9, the socket having a bottom 10, so that when the stud f is forced into the socket, the stud will rest on the bottom 10 to hold the curtain rod in position. The bracket E, as shown in Fig. 7, is provided with a cylindrical socket 11 into which engages a pintle pin 6, the upper end of the pin being connected with the rear member 13, and when the pintle pin is inserted the curtain rod and curtains are firmly supported. By means of this hinge connection the curtain rod with its curtains can be swung outwardly in a horizontal plane so that the curtains will be out of the way when the window is to be cleaned, or for any other purpose. It will be understood that the stud f has a forced connection 7 with the socket of the bracket F, and therefore the curtain rod can be readily attached to or detached from this bracket.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have describedthe principle ofoperation, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understoodthat the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters" Patent;
- l. A curtain supporting rod consisting of front and rear members, each member consisting of a channeled middle section and slidable end sections, means for drawing the rods together at their ends for clamping curtains between the rods, and means adjacent the middle of the rod for independently clamping the curtains.
2. A curtain supporting rod consisting of front and rear members, means for drawing the members together at their ends for clamping curtains between them, and an adjustable element at the middle of one of the members and movable toward the member to clamp the curtains.
3. A curtain supporting rod consisting of front and rear. members each composed of central and'end sections longitudinally adjustable one on another for'lengthening or shortening the rod, a plate on one of the inner sections, screws for moving the plate toward the central section of the other memher for clamping curtains, and means on the end sections for drawing the members together for clamping curtains.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PAUL ALTSCHUL.
