WED GE-CUTTE R.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 18,1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELIJAH B. EGHOLS and HERMAN J. ZINDLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Belton and Schwertner, respectively, in the counties of Bell and Williamson and Stateof Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wedge-Cutters, of which the fol lowing is a specication. N v j The invention relates to a wood cutting machine, and more particularly to the class of wedge cutters. a i
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a wedge cutter, wherein the work support is adjustable either, vertically or horizontally relative to the cutting blade or bit, so that various sizes of wedges can be made, from a block of wood. A
Another object of the. invention is the provision of a wedge cutter of thischaracter, wherein the work supportand the cutting blade or bitare of novel construction, to assure the perfect formation of the wedges, which may be of any length and thickness, as the occasion may require.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a. wedge cutter of this characterwherein the cutting blade or bit has a positive horizontal motion, without excessive leverage, thereby permitting wedges to be cut with dispatch and without inconvenience to the operator.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a wedge cutter, wherein the same can be firmly clamped to a work bench, and is readily and easily operated.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a wedge cutter of this character, which is simple in construction, thor' oughly reliable and efiicient in operation, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings I-Figure 1, is a side elevation of a wedge cutter constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2, is a fragmentary top plan view. Fig. v
section view. Fig. 6, is a sectional view on the line 66of Fig. 1'.
Similar reference charactersindicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the wedge cutter comprises a base or bed plate 10, which in this instance is in the form of a flat elongated metallic, plate, although the same may be made in any other shape and from any suitable material, to which is fixed a supporting frame 11, formed from a rigid bar havinga raised inverted substantially U-shaped medial portion 12, while at one end is an upturnedbearing 13, and at its opposite .endis a depending clamp jaw 14, adapted for engagement with a work bench, the said jaw beingfitted with a clamp screw 15, for the fastening thereof to the said bench when the cutter is in use.
Upon the bearing 13, and the side adjacent thereto of the medial portion12, is mounted a foundation plate 16, for a follower plate 17, having the notched end 18, engaged with the bearing 13, while threaded in the foundation plate 16, are adjusting screws 19, which act upon the follower plate 17 to move the same vertically for the raising and lowering of a work support or abutting block 20, slidably mounted upon the follower plate 17 the said support or block 20,'being formed with a recess 21, in its under side to accommodate a perforated eye 22, formed on the follower plate 17, for receiving the non-threaded portion 23, of an adjusting screw 24:, engaged in the support or block 20, and mounted for vertical move ment in elongated slots 25, formed in the bearing 13 and the side-adjacent thereto of the portion 12, thus it being seen that the support or block20, can be adjusted either vertically or horizontally.
Secured upon the medial portion 12, is a guide plate 26, having a flanged guide-way 27, therein receiving a horizontally movable cutting blade or bit 28, the forward end of which is formed with a beveled cutting edge 29, while its rear end is provided with an eye extension 30, loosely engaging a pivot 31, mounted in and astride a forked inner end 32, of an operating lever 33, which is also pivoted at 34:, to a rocking link 35, pivoted at 36,to a bearing lug 37, rising from and mounted in the rear end of the frame 11, and this lever 83, is designed for manually actuating the cutting blade or bit 28,
which is formed with a medial elongated slot 38, having passed therethrough a stop screw 39, which limits the movement of the blade or bit 28, when sliding toward or away from the work.
The work support or abutting block 20, is formed in its upper face with an abutting or beveled recess 40, providing a seat for the wood block to be cut for the making of wedges therefrom on the movement of the blade'or bit 28, in one direction, by operat ing the lever 33, connected thereto.
()n adjustment of the follower plate 17,
vertically the thickness of the wedge can be varied, and on adjustment of the support or block 20, horizontally the length of the said wedge'can be increased or shortened as will be clearly apparent. v
The inner end of the adjusting screw 24,
has threaded thereon a nut 41, which swivels I the same in the supporting frame 11, while the outer'end of said screw 24,-, is formed with a wing nut or head 42, so that it can be conveniently turned. by hand.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be understood and therefore a. more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is: j
1. A wedge cutter comprising a base, a bar bent to provide an inverted U-shaped medial portion, horizontal portions on opposite sides thereof, a vertical bearing rising from the outer end of one of the horizontal portions, and a depending jaw at the outer end of the other horizontal portion, means securing the horizontal portions to toward and away from the recess in the block. V
2. A wedge cutter comprising a base, a bar bent to provide an inverted U-shaped medial portion, horizontal portionson opposite sides thereof, a vertical bearing rising from the outer end of one of the horizontal portions, and a depending jaw at the outer end of the other horizontal portion, means securing the horizontal portions to the base, a vertically and horizontally adjustable abutment'block supported between the hearing and the inverted U-shaped portion, and having a recess, a guide fixed to the inverted U-shaped portion, a reciprocatory cutting bit slidable in the guide toward and away from the recess in the block, and a lever linked to the horizontal portion formed-with the jaw, and pivoted to the bit.
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures. 7
