To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, XVILLARD D. CnANNEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Logan, in the county of Cache and State of Utah, haveinvented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ties and Means for Securing Rails Thereto, of which the following 1s a full, clear, and exact description. My invention comprises a novel railroad tie and means for securing a rail in position thereon, said attaching portion of the tieitself.
The object of my invention is the pro vision of simple, efiicient and economical means for attaching the rails to a tie which means including a latter, in its preferred form, comprises ametallic body portion provided with a wooden, shock absorbing, pillow block.
Broadly speaking, the invention consists in providing the tie with lugs or projections adapted to engage bifurcated retaining clamp members which overlie the rail flanges, and in forcing the parts intoclose engagement by wedging action.
In the single sheet of drawings accompanying this application and forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of a tie, with a portion of a rail secured thereto; Fig. 2 is a cross section of the parts shown in F 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the clamps.

The body portion 11 of the clamping members is so proportioned as to overlie and engage the flange of a rail throughout the length of the clamp and the clamp is further provided with asubstantially horizontal lip 12 adapted to extend over the pillow block 6 and provided with an opening 13 through which a spike 14 may be driven to engage the pillow block. The channel flanges; of the tie are notched to rest solely on the pillow block and at the sametime to prevent lateral displacement of the rails, the rail flange and the clamping members substantially filling the out out portion.
In assembling, the pillow blocks are placed in the channels nearer the ends of the ties than in the final position shown in the drawings and the clamping members are hooked over the lugs 9 but swung away from operative position. Then the rail is placed on the pillow blocks and the clamping memhers swung over its flanges, the parts being so proportioned that an approximate, though loose, fit is thus had. The pillow blocks are slightly wedge shaped in vertical section, as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and the parts are tightly drawn into engagement by driving the pillow blocks home. Spikes 14 are then driven to firmly hold the parts in position.
If desired the webs of the channels may be punched as shown in Fig. 2 to provide slightly interiorly protruding, springy,teeth 16 which will readily allow the pillow blocks to pass over them in the act of driving home in the direction shown by the arrow A but which, by entering the wood, will aid in preventing their working loose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a rail, a tie having a pair of projections extending laterally from each side thereof, and a pair of bifurcated clamping members adapted to be placed one posite sides of the tie, and wedging means adapted to draw the rail and clamping members into close engagement. 7
2. In combination, a rail, a channeled metallic tie having a pair of projections extending laterally from each side thereof, a pair of bifurcated clamping members adapted to be placed one on each side of said rail to overlie and engage the flanges thereof and to pass under and engage a pair ofprojections on opposite sides of the tie, and a wedge shaped pillow block adapted to lie within the channel of the tie below the rail and, by being driven home, to force the at 15 to allow the rail clamps into close eiig'agenient Withlsaid tending laterally from each side thereof at 7 each end, a pair of bifurcated clamping.
