To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY B. NnwnALL, J12, a citizen of the UnitedeStates, residing in Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Holding Floor-Stands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to, and has for a main object, to provide a movable floor stand for tools such as hammer drills or the like. 7
Other objects of the invention are to equip such a floor stand with a platform on which the operator may sit when operating the tools supported by the floor stand; to provide such a floor stand whereby the attack of the tool onto the work or removal of the tool from such work may be accomplished with great facility; to provide such a floor stand in which the supporting frame of the tool may be readily rotated" in order to turn the tool in the hole for the purpose of clearance; and to provide a floor stand to which a tool carrier can be attached ready for operation without reconstruction of such tool carrier. These and other features, capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from the subjoined detailed description of one specific embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the floor stand with a tool and tool carrier attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the same. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective of a' modification. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective of the connection between the tool and the floor stand. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail showing the pivotal connection between the upper end of the yoke and the tool carrier.
In the embodiment shown, there is provided a conveyance composed of a platform substantially oblong in outline conformation, provided with three Ushaped brackets, one such bracket 11 disposed adjacentto and medially of the'rear end of the platform 10 and the other two- brackets 12, 12 disposed one at each side of and near the frcnt end of the platform 10. Each of these brackets 11 and 12 is provided with a-pivot-' ally supported bearing 13 for a caster 14: by

Near the front end of the portion 18, there is provided an opening in which the cylindrical collar 20 is disposed having a lower outstanding annular portion 21 to rest adjacent the lower surface of the portion 18 and an upper outstanding annular portion 22 spaced apart from said portion 18 a predetermined distance, said collar being mounted to swivel in the opening formed in said portion 18.
in the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, a hammer drill and the yoke for supporting the same are mounted on the portion 18 of the platform 10 and secured to one another so as to swing'as a unit relative to said portion 18, The yoke of this construction is designated as 24 and has a lower end 23 (see Fig; t) secured between the portion 18 and the upper outstanding annular portion 22 of the collar 20, and an upper end 25. Between the upper end and the lower end of the yoke 24:, there is secured the hammer drill 26 having a casing 27 prof vided with a belly portion 28 from one side of; which extends a handle 29 for operating the hammer drill, and a guiding handle 30 at the upper end of said casing, and a bit 31 at the lowerend thereof, which bit extends throughthe collar. 20, being reciprocably mounted therein, the shoulder 82 at the lower end of the hammer drill resting on the upper edge of said collar 20. The upper end 25. of the yoke 24 is pivotally connected ,to the upper end of the casing 27 inside of the handle 30 by means of a bolt 33. This bolt 33, as shown in Fig. 5, has a screw-threaded connection with the upper end 25 of the yoke 24:, terminating at its lower end in a pivotal pin 36 which is adapted to engage in an orifice37 formed in the upper end of the casing 27 insidefof the handle 30 as shown, By this arrangement, it is made possible to use any of the standard tool carriers of' the character described, J
and by merely. forming the orifice 37, to
prepare the tool carrier ready for use with the present movable floor stand, since when it is desired to equip the floor stand with a tool carrier, it is only necessary to guide the lower end of the tool carrier so that its shoulder 32 will rest on the upper edge of the collar 20, then swing the casing 27 over so that its upper end is disposed under the upper end 25 of the yoke 2%, the pin 36 located in the orifice 37 and the bolt 33 screwed down into a position where it is locked by the lookout 3S and where it will pivotally lock the tool carrier in place. And on the other hand, when it is desired to re move such tool carrier, it is only necessary to unscrew the bolt 33 to free the upper end of the tool carrier, swing it out of engagement with such yoke and withdraw the lower end from the collar 20. The yoke 2% which for convenience of description is termedthe close yoke, has its main portion lying substantially close to the casing 27 and is provided with a handle 34 on the side of it removed from the casing 27, which handle 3 in the present instance is provided with a stud e0 (Fig. 2) extending through the yoke 24- and into that side of the belly portion 28 of the casing 27 which is opposite to the side on which the handle 29 is secured whereby the yoke 24 is fixed to swivel with the casing 27.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3, instead of the close yoke there is provided a bowed yoke 39 which bulges out beyond the fixed handle 35 secured to that side of the belly portion 28 which is opposite to the side thereof to which the operating handle 29 is secured. The bowed yoke 39 has its upper end 25 and its lower end 23 secured in place substantially in the same manner as is the case with the close yoke 24 except that this yoke 39 is not fastened to the belly portion 28 so that it will be compelled to rotate with such casing 27, but on the other hand, the connection of the pivotal pin 36 disposed in the orifice 37 at the upper end of the casing 27, and the connection of the lower end 23 of the yoke 39 with the collar 22 will be sufficiently free to permit the hammer drill 26 to freely swivel relative to said bowed yoke 39 and thereby permit proper turning of the drill to provide clearance of the bit in the hole.
In the operation of the device, the operator will sit on the platform 10 and more the platform around to the location of the work. WVhen he is ready to commence the operation, he will shift forward a trifle so that the platform will tilt from the dotted line position to the full line position shown in Fig. l, where the hammer drill will be in contact with the work to be operated upon and ready to be operated. When the operator wishes to withdraw the tool from the work, by shifting rearwardly of the platform, the
platform will tend to tilt back into the dotted line position and thus automatically withdraw the tool from the work.
The hammer drill 26 is secured to the portion 18 at an angle substantially at right angles to the plane of the platform 10, so that when the platform is tilted forwardly in which the plane of the platform will be disposed substantially parallel to the plane of the floor F, then the hammer drill will be disposed substantially at right angles to the plane of the floor F, and thus be enabled to attack the work in a practically vertical line.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combinationwith a conveyance on which the operator may sit, comprising a platform supported on casters by means of which the platform may be shifted from place to place, of an extension at one end of said platform, a yoke secured to said extension, there being openings in the upper end of said yoke, in the lower end of said yoke, and through the extension adjacent to said yoke all in alinement with one another, a tool carrier swivelly supported in said openings, a tool carried by said tool carrier and extending through the lower end of said yoke and through said extension to be .in position to be operated by the operator seated on the platform.
2. In a device of the character. described, the combination with a conveyance on which the operator may sit, comprising a platform movably supported, of an extension at one end of said platform, a yoke secured to said extension, there being openings in the upper end of said yoke. in the lower end of said yoke, and through the extension adja'- cent to said yoke all in alinement with one another, a tool carrier swivelly supported in said openings, a tool carried'by said tool carrier and extend ng through the lower end of said yoke and through said extension to be in position to be operated by the operator seated on the platform.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a conveyance on which the operator may sit, comprising a support movably mounted, of a yoke secured to said support, there being openings in the upper end of said yoke, in the lower end of said yoke. and through said support adjacent to said yoke all in alinement with one another, a tool carrier swivelly supported in said openings, and a tool carried by said tool carrier and extending through the lower end of said yoke and through said support/ to be in position to be operated by the 01386 1 O g p o ator seated on the support,

5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a conveyance on which the operator may sit comprising a platform, of casters on which said platform is movably mounted, a pair of said casters being disposed adjacent to the front end of said platform, an extension secured at such front end of said platform, a yoke secured to such extension, there being openings in the upper end of said yoke, in the lower end of said yoke, and through the extension adjacent to said yoke all in alinement with one another, a tool carrier swivelly supported in said openings, a tool carried by said tool carrier and extending through the lower end of said yoke and through said extension to be in position to be operated by the operator seated on said platform, the platform being tiltably mounted with said pair of casters as a fulcrum, said platform being disposed at an inclined angle to the floor on which it is supported when in raised position, said tool being disposed substantially at right angles to said platform.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a conveyance on which the operator may sit, comprising a platform supported on casters by means of which the platform may be shifted from place to place, of anextension at one end of said platform, a yoke secured to said extension, there being openings in the upper end of said yoke, in the lower end of said yoke, and through the extension adjacent to said yoke all in alinement with one another, a rotary drill casing swivelly supported in said openings, a tool carried by said casing and extending through the lower end of said yoke and through said extension to be in position to be operated by the operator seated on the platform, a handle for operating said tool and extending from the side of said casing, and a second handle on said yoke for steadying or turning the casing.
7. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a conveyance on which the operator may sit, of a yoke at one end of the conveyance for supporting a tool carrier ready for operation, said yoke being adapted to receive and fasten a standard tool carrier of the class described without reconstruction and com-prising a lower end piece having an opening in which the lower end of the tool carrier-is disposed, and an upper end piece having a bolt, said bolt terminating in a pivotal pin in its lower end, and there being an orifice in the upper end of said tool carrier into which the pivotal pin of said bolt may engage to pivotally lock the tool carrier in place.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination with a conveyance on which the operator may sit, comprising a platform supported on casters by means of which the platform may be shifted from place to place, of an extension at one end of said platform, a yoke secured to said extension, there being openings in the upper end of said yoke, in the lower end of said yoke, and through the extension adjacent to said. yoke all in alinement with one another, a rotary drill casing swivelly supported in said openings, a tool carried by said casing and extending through the lower end of said yoke and through said extension to be in position to be operated by the operator seated on the platform, a handle for operating said tool and extending from the side of said casing, and a second handle on said yoke, said casing being fastened to said yoke so that said second handle may be used for steadying or turningthe casing.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination with a conveyance on which the operator may sit, comprising a platform, of mounting means disposed adjacent to the front end of said platform for movably mounting said platform, an extension secured at such front end of said platform, a yoke secured to such extension, there being openings in the upper end of said yoke, in the lower end of said yoke, and through the extension adjacent to said yoke all in alinement with one another, a tool carrier swivelly supported in said openings, a tool carried by said tool carrier and extending through the lower end of said yoke and through said support to be in position to be operated by the operator seated on said platform, the platform being tiltably mounted about said mounting means.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a conveyance on which the operator may sit, comprising a platform, of mounting means disposed adjacent to the front end of said platform for movably mounting said platform, an extension secured at such front end of said platform, a yoke secured to such extension, there being openings in the upper end of saidyoke, in the lower end of said yoke, and through the extension adjacent to said yoke all in alinement With one another, a tool carrier sWivelly supported in said openings, a tool carried by said tool carrier and extending through the lower end of said yoke and through said support to be in position to be operated by the operator seated on said platform, the platform being tiltably mounted about said mounting means, said platform being dis- HENRY B.
