To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. MCPHER- son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to'be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to useful improvements in gates and more particularly to those mounted to be shifted vertically for I- allowing easy closing andopening thereof.
The object of the invention is to provide a gate of this class having simple and eiiicient raising means adapted to operate antomatically upon releasing ofthe gate latch, and held out of action when the latch is in operative position to lock the gate.
With this general object in view,'the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the" accompanying drawings wherein: U y

In these drawings, which constitute a part of the application and in which like refer ence characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, P indicates an upright hinge post while P designates the latch postspaced therefrom. The post P is equipped with any preferred type of hinge H and upon which the gate G is mounted.
The gate G comprises a plurality of pairs of upright transverse bars 1 to one of which the hinges H are connected, and a series of horizontal longitudinal bars 2 pivoted at 3 to said bars 1, by bolts, rivets, or by other appropriate devices. By this construction, the numerous upright and horizontal bars of the gate may move parallelogrammatically. this being expedient in order to allow the Unhinged end of the gate to be raised Specificationof Letters Patent.

For moving the gate upwardly, after the latch to be described has first been released, an evening lever a is fulcrumed between its ends to the hinged end of the gate, preferably to one of the uprightbars 1 at such end. Connected to the upper end of the lever -1 through the instrumentality of the coiled spring 5 is a lifting rod 6 which is pivoted at 7 intermediate the ends, but near one end of the gate, the pivot being shown as disposed on one of the upright bars 1, while connected to such bar 1 by a coiled spring 8 at a point above the pivot 7, is an additional rod 9 pivoted to the lower end of the evening lever 4. Thus, the spring 8 in pulling in one direction, will tend to tilt the lever 1 as'disclosed Figs. 3 and 4.. thus pulling upwardly upon the rod 6 to tilt the gate upwardly, and such action is facilitated by'the spring 5. The tension of the two springs maybe varied at will by the turn bugkles 10 disposed between the ends of such r0 s.
For normally preventing upward shifting ofthe gate, an inclined brace bar 11 is pivoted at 12 near the upper corner of the gate atthe hinged end thereof, the lower s de of said bar being provided with a pluralitv of spaced stops 13 at its free end which coact with a single stop 14; carried between the ends of the gate, to overcome the raising tendency of the springs 5 and 8, whether the gate be lowered as disclosed in F gs. 1 and 2 or partially raised as shown in Fig. 3.
For locking the gate in cl sed pos tion when it is lowered, the horizontally slidable latch bolt 15 is provided for proiection into a socket or keeper carried by the post P, the rear end of the bolt 15 being pivoted to the upper arm of a releasing lever 16 which is fulcrumed between its ends at 17, preferably to one of the horizontal bars 2, while the lower arm of said lever is connected by a link 18 to the lower end of the brace bar 11. This feature of construction will raise the bar 11 to disengage the stops 13 and 14, simultaneously with releasing of the latch bolt 15, whereby the gate will be immediately raised by the springs 5 and 8 and will thus be in readiness for opening. The extent to which the gate is raised may now be limited by reengagement of the stops 13 and 14 as disclosed in Fig. l, it being evident that this disposition of parts also prevents lowering of the gate until the lever 15 is again actuated. It will also be obvious that the engagement of the stops 13 and let effectively braces the gate against sagging when lowered. V V
In the drawings, I have shown certain Specific details of construction for accomplishing the results desired in probably the most expeditious manner, have shown the several parts located in certain predetermined relations, and in the preceding Ihave described these features of construction, but
it is obvious that various changes regarding form, proportion, character of materials,
positions of parts, etc., may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
I claim v 1. In combination, a vertically shiftable gate, mechanical raising means therefor, an
inclined pivoted brace bar for normally the aforesaid stop to normally overcome the action of the raising means, a latch for the gate including a manually shiftable memher, and a link connecting said member and the free end of the brace bar, whereby to shift the latter to disengage the stops upon releasing of the latch.
3; In combination, a vertically tilting hingedly supported gate, an upright evening lever fulcrumed between its ends to the hinged end of'the gate,'an inclined lifting rod connecting the upper end of the evening leverwith a lower point on the gate, an additional rod connectinga higher point on the gate and the lower end of the evening lever, springs forming portions of the aforesaid rods, an inclined brace rod plvoted at its upper end near the upper corner of the gate at the hinged end thereof, a series of spaced stops on the lower end of the brace rod, an additional stop carried by the intermediate portion of the gate for coaction ,with the aforesaid stops, a link leading from said lower end of the brace bar to the free end of the gate, an upright lever to which said link is connected, and a latch bolt likewise connected to said lever.
