FREDERICK S. GICHNER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
BORDER-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. til, jihffi.
Application filed June 10, 1915. Serial No. 33,270.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK S. GIGH- nnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Border-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to guards or protectors for grass plots, flower beds, shrubbery and trees, and for bordering lawns, walks and driveways; and has for its objects to provide a strong and durable sectional and extensible guard adapted to be easily inserted in the ground and .to have a firm hold therein; and the length of which may be .readily adjusted at will by adding or leaving 0d sections or elements of which the guard is composed.
The invention consists in the parts and combinations thereof hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In order to make my invention more clearly understood 1 have shown in the accompanying drawings means for carryingit into practical effect, without limiting my improvements, in their useful applications,to the particular constructions or dimensions which, for the purpose of example, I have illustrated.
n u elevation of a portion of a guard, consisting In the said drawings Figure 1 is a side of several sections, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one ofthe end or finishing sections. Fig. 4.- is a diagram in perspective showing a continuous guard. 5 is a side elevation showing a construction of the guard adapted for an inclined surface of the ground. Fig. 6 is a detailview of two of the sections of the guard shown in Fig. 5. Fig.
.7 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the detachable fastening by which the upper part of the sections are united, showing parts of said sections. I
Referring to the drawings, A. indicates one of the intermediate sections formed of a continuous strip of flat steel, a practical and convenient size forwhich strip is about five eighths of an inch wide and one-eighth of an inch thick. This strip, forming a section or element, is continuous and bent at the top at 1 to form two downwardly extending legs 2, 3 the flat or wide sides of which are presented toward each other, and which terminate in points i.
The sections, and the guard as a whole, may be of convenient he ght according to the purpose for which t IS to be used. A. height of about thirty inches is suitable for many purposes. The upper parts :2 of the legs are curved or inclmed from the bend l and the lower parts 3 are straight and vertical.
The sections are provided with suitable detachable fastenings, whereby they may be allel with the longitudinal direction of the guard, and which is perforated transversely at 8 to receive a bolt 9 having a removable nut.
The complete guard as set up for use consists of a series of sections A of the desired number separably united one to another by the lower bolts 6, and a second series of sections similarly united to each other by another alternating series of bolts 6, and separably united to the sections of the first series by the upper bolts 9.
It will be seen that when the sections are united as above described the lower part of each leg is in effect double and very strong. When these legs are inserted or pushed into the ground, which may be to a depth of about nine inches, more or less, on the scale illustrated, they obtain a very firm hold in the earth. In the direction of the length of the guard the sections brace one another strongly, each section having four bolt connections, and also overlapping the next sections; and the edges of all of the metal strips are presented to sldewise strains on the guard so that it cannot be bent in that direction under any normal conditions of use.
By making the bends at 7 a little more or less than a quarter turn the sections will be adapted to form a curved or continuous circular guard, and to conform to the border of the lawn or flower or shrubbery bed,.or
Cit
be assembled to form a guard suitableto extend up or down hill with the legs substantially vertical, as shown in Fig. 5. In such case the lower perforation 5 of each leg is formed at a uniform distance from the turn 7 of the same leg.
When the guard is not arranged to be circular or otherwise continuous, and has two ends, terminal sections B are or may be assembled with the sections A at the ends of the guard. The section B has one leg similar in formation to those above described, and another leg 10 which extends down vertically from the bend 1. The vertical leg is united by a perforation and bolt 6 with the outermost leg of the last section A, and the other leg is similarly united with a leg of the next to the last section A. Also the curved or inclined part of the inner leg of the section B is united with the corresponding intersecting part 2 of the last section A by a bolt 9. The guard is thus given a strong terminal support, its terminal attachment to the ground being double;
It will be understood that the invention is not confined to the exact bends and configurations and conformations of parts shown, as other forms consistent with the construction described may be employed.
What I claim is:
1. In an extensible border guard, in combination: sections each formed with a bent top and two legs, and arranged with the sections alternating with and overlapping each other so as to form stiif contacting double legs; fastenings separable from the sections and uniting the bent portions of the sec tions; and fastenings separable from said legs and uniting said legs pairs; substan- I tially as specified.
In an extensible border guard combination: a series of sections each formed witha bent top and two legs; fastenings separable from the sections for uniting said legs in pairs, the legs being in contact with each other; a second series of such sections having their legs similarly united, and applied to the first series so that the sections of the second series alternate with and overlap the sections of the first series; and fastenings separable from the sections for uniting the bent top of each leg of one series with the bent top of a leg of the other series of sections; substantially as specified.
3. In an extensible border guard, in combination: a series of sections each formed of fiat metal bent at the top to form two legs and presenting the edges of the sections toward the sides of the guard; detachable fastenings for uniting the lower parts of the said legs; a second series of such sections similarly united and applied to the first series sothat the sections of the second series alternate with and overlap the sections of e first se ies; and ha le f t n ns for uniting the upper part of each leg .of one series of sections with a leg of the other series of sections.
4. In an extensible border guard, in combination: a series of sections each formed of flat metal bent at the top to form two legs, each leg being formed near the top with a quarter turn and a transverse perforation and near the bottom with a longitudinal perforation; detachable fastenings uniting the lower parts of said legs; a second series of such sections having the lower parts of their legs detachably united; and detachable fastenings uniting the quarter turns of the second series of sections with the quarter turns of the sections of the first series.
