To all whom it may concern:
Be is known that I, HENRY E. a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boring Attachments for shaper-Rams, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to theac'companying drawings.
The shaping, planing or facing of very large heavy castings is "accomplished with facility by the use of traveling head shapers, and especially by those having a reciproeable tool carrying ram, butin order to complete the several other operations, such as boring, milling, etc., it has been necessary to move the work to another machine.
The object of this invention is to provide means whereby the operations of milling, boring, etc, may be performed in conjunction with the shaping or planing operations of a traveling head shaper without the necessity for re-setting the work, and to so construct said means as to make the same readily applicable to the shaper ram and to be actuated by the driving mechanism of the shaper.
lVith these and other ends in View, the invention consists in providing an attachment which may be readily applied to the ram of a shaper without the necessity for removing the usual cutter head from the ram, and further to provide a construction embodying certain other new and useful features, all as hereinafter more fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a traveling head shaper having a tool carrying ram to which the attachment embodying the invention is adapted to be applied; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the attachment detached; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same showing it secured to the end of the ram; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the attachment on the line IV-IV of Figs. 2 and 3.
Asillustrating one form of traveling head shaper or planer to which the attachment embodying the invention may be applied, a machine is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing having a bed A upon which the head B is movable and on this head is a vertically adjustable apron 0 provided with a suitable bearing for a horizontally disposed reciprocable tool carrying ram D, but it will MORTON,
be understood that the attachment may be applied to other forms of machines having a tool carrying ram. This machine or its mechanism for actuating the head, raising and lowering the apron and reciprocating the ram forms no part of this invention and said mechanism is therefore not shown in detail. The ram is provided with the usual detachable tool carrying head E having a cutting tool F secured therein, the end of the ram being screwthreaded to engage the head. 7
This invention resides in an attachment comprising a body 1 having a laterally extending portion 2 formed with a channel or seat to engage one side of the ram D just back of its forward end to which the head E is attached. This body is rigidly and detachably secured to the ram by means of clamping bars 3 and bolts 4 which firmly clamp the head seated upon the side of the ram.
The body 1 is formed near its rear end with a chamber or casing 5 for gears 6 and 7, said casing being formed with a bearing for a drive shaft 8 to which the gear 6 is secured in mesh with the gear 7. The body is also formed with a longitudinally extending bearing for a short or counter shaft 9 to the rear end of which the gear 7 is secured, said shaft being provided upon its forward end with a bevel pinion 10 to engage a horizontally disposed bevel gear 11 carrying a gear 12 in mesh with a pinion 13 secured upon a vertical spindle 14 mounted in bearings in the body and extending through a gear box 15 in which the gears 10, 11, 12 and 13 are inclosed, said box being provided with a removable cover 16. A suitable boring or other tool 17 is attached in the usual manner to the lower end of spindle 14: to turn therewith, the proper speed and power for the spindle and tool being secured through the train of gearing in the gear box and casing.
The driving shaft 8 extends parallel with the ram and through suitable bearings on a casing 18 in which is a driving gear (not shown) engaged by a key or spline 19 on the shaft so that the shaft will be turned by the gear and be free to slide longitudinally therethrough as the ram is projected or retracted. This gear may be actuated in any convenient manner from the feeding or other mechanism of the machine.

positioned to operate upon the work, by moving the ram in the usual manner longitudinally in its bearings, raising or lowering the apron, or moving the head B upon the base A, and when in proper position, power will be transmitted from the driving mechanism of the machine through the shaft 8 to rotate the tool 17. The placing of the attachment may be quickly accomplished as it is not necessary to remove the head or tool holder E and the device is very simple owing to the fact that no adjustments or feeding means for the tool is necessary and that it is carried by the ram which may be adjusted in any direction required and moved with a continuous feeding movement in a vertical or horizontal plane.
Obviously, changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts to conform to the requirements of the particular machine to which the invention is to be applied without departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not therefore limit myself to the form or arrangement shown.
Having thus fully described my invention What I claim is 1. An attachment for shaper rams embodying a supporting member having a laterally off-set portion formed with a seat to engage the side of a ram, means for detachably securing said member seated upon a ram, a splined shaft having a hearing at one end on said member and adapted to extend longitudinally of a ram to which the member is secured, a tool actuating member mounted in bearings on said supporting member, and means on the supporting member for transmitting motion from said shaft to said tool actuating member.
3. An attachment for shaper rams embodying a supporting member having a laterally off-set portion formed with a seat to engage the side of a ram, means for detachably holding said member seated upon a ram at one side of and spaced from the ram, said member being formed with a gear casing and bearings for a vertical and a horizontal shaft, a splined shaft supported at one end in the horizontal bearing to extend longitudinally of a ram to which the member is attached, a vertical tool carrying spindle mounted in the vertical bearing, and a train of gearing in the gear casing for transmitting motion from the said shaft to the spindle.
