To all 117mm it 112 07 concern Be it known that I, Josnr HUTTER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-I-lungary, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Starting-Levers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for cranking or setting in operation any of the common forms of gas engines or other explosive motors and particularly to types used in propelling vehicles, boats and similar purposes.
The main object of the invention is to provide a manually operable crank for such purpose, that can be used with entire safety and freedom from danger to the operator should the shaft start to rotate suddenly in the direction the crank is turned, or if the engine should accidentally back fire and rotate in a reverse direction.
Other objects are to provide such starters in forms readily applicable to existing conditions as well as original installations; that require no special experience in their use,
and which are economical with respect to wearing qualities and manufacturing cost.
These objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a starter made in accord with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view, taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the starter, looking oppositely from the view shown in Fig. 2, and, Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 2. y
In the drawings a support 10 is shown which "may be part of the permanent structure of the OlJjt vt to which the starter is applied. Through this extends the engine shaft 11. or its equivalent. to such distance as will allow ready accessibility. Rotatahly surrounding the shaft is a sleeve 12, also passing: through the support 10 and having on it a fixed collar 13, limiting the longitudinal movement of the sleeve by contacting with the support 10 when the sleeve is moved outwardly. rigidly secured in the shaft 11 and extending outward on one or both sides of the shaft. In position to contact with the support 10, 011 its outer side, is a ratchet 16, the same running loose on the sleeve 12; engaging with the teeth of the ratchet is a detent or pawl 17 pivoted to the support 10 and held in engagement by the spring 18.
A U shaped yoke lever having elements 19 and 20, connected by a bar 21, is mounted on the sleeve 12, the element 19 being rigidly secured to the side of the ratchet 16 by means of screws 22, and adjacent to the opposite face of the element 19 is a disk 23, the same being keyed securely to the sleeve 12 upon which it is centered.
An operating lever 2%,havinga handle 25, is pivoted on the bolt 26 secured in the yoke lever elements 19 and 20. This operating lever is provided with long hub 27 through which the bolt 26 passes; it has an extension 28 containing an elongated slot 29 through Which the sleeve 12 passes, and a cam 30 in normal contact with the disk 23. A pin 31 is driven into the extension 28 and has bearing against it the fiat spring 32, the other end of which is rigidly secured to the edge of the element 20 in such manner as to keep the parts normally as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. Another pin 83 is secured in the side of the disk 23, and extends outward into the re cess 34, formed in the edge of the cam 30.
In operation the sleeve is pushed rearwardly on the shaft until the ratchet teeth 14 engage with the pin 15, whereupon the lever 24 is actuated in a clock-wise direc tion, causing the shaft to rotate until the motor starts to operate and throw the ratchet out of engagement by forcing the sleeve to move forward or outwardly. This operation may require several revolutions of the starting lever and necessarily also of the yoke, causing the ratchet 16, to turn the detent, clicking over the teeth; when the motor is started both the lever and yoke mav hang pendent through gravity until again required. If however, the motor should back fire and start counter clock-wise, injury to the operator is certain to result-unless provision is made; in order to avoid such mishap the ratchet 16 comes into use, for. as it cannot rotate backward. or the yoke which is connected with it. the result is that the starting lever is caused to pivot on the l) lt 26. moving the extension 28 so as to cause the sleeve 12 to pass to the other end of the slot 29, thereby freeing the pin33 from the recess 34:, in the cam 30, and allowing the pin to rotate around the cam, together with the keyed disk 28, without affecting the operating lever.
From the foregoing it will be seen that an effective crankinglever is provided that may be used with the utmost safety to the operator, no matter how unskilled.
Having thus described my invention and ascertained its construction, purpose and use, what I claim as new and seek to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a safety starting mechanism, a shaft, a sleeve movable thereon, and a support, of a yoke lever revoluble on said sleeve, a ratchet engaged therewith, an actuating lever pivcted in said yoke lever, a disk keyed to said sleeve, and means combined with the disk and said actuating lever whereby the latter is prevented from turningwhen said shaft is rotated reversely from normal.
2. In a safety starting mechanism, the combination with a rotatable shaft, a sleeve limitedly slidable and revoluble thereon, and means for ope'atively engaging said sleeve with said shaft, of an actuating lever oscillatable on said sleeve, a support for said actuating lever, said support being centered on said sleeve, means for normally maintaining said lover in an operative position and means for disengaging said lever upon a reverse action of said shaft.
