FOLDING WAGON- or.
mee'ser. 7
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, 'EnwAnn B. SArFoRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carmona, in the county of Polk and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Wagon- Tops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved portable vehicle top such as is used upon farm wagons and the like and the principal object of the invention is to provide a vehicle top which is so constructed that it may be easily removably connected with a wagon and to so construct the top that it may be folded when attached to a wagon.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for releasably connecting the supporting leg of the top proper with the'standards which carry the top.
Another object of the invention is to provide a removable top which will be very simple in construction and which will be very strong and durable and which may be securely held in a set up posltion.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a View of the removable top shown connected with a wagon which is indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the top, Fig. 3 is a perspective viewof a casting which forms a part of this invention, Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken along the line 4: '4: of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view of one of the castings which forms part of this invention.
The wagon 10 which is of the ordinary type is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and may be of the type shown or any other suitable type, the one shown being simply used.
to indicate a wagon with which the top may be connected. The standards 11 are connected with the opposite'sides of the wagon body by means of the straps 12 and it will thus be seen that when desired the standards may be readily removed by simply drawing them upwardly out through the straps.
Each of the standards carries a casting which is shown in Fig. 3 and isprovided with an attaching plate 13 and a housing 14. which extends from the attaching plate 13 and has its forward wall provided with openings 15 formed in alinement with openings 16 in the attaching plate, WlllOll attaching plate is also provided with fastener re- I Specification of Letters Patent.

ceiving openings 17. The 'side' wallsof the housing are provided with slots 18 for a purpose which will be hereinafter brought out. i
The top proper comprises a body portion 19 which is formed of canvas or other suitable material and is secured to a frame which is removably connected with the This frame is provided with a center yoke 20 and forward and rear bows 21 and 22, and stretchers 23 which are of the brake joint type as shown in Fig. 2 are hingedly connected with the bows 21 and 22 and when in an extended position rest upon the latches 24E pivotally mounted in the slot 25 of the yoke 20 upon the pins 26. These latches or supporting members are yieldably held in the normal position shown in Fig. 1 by the leaf springs 27 and prevented from moving beyond a desired position by the heels 28 which constitute abutments.
When this cover is in use the standards are placed in the straps 12 and the arms of the yoke 20 are then passed through the straps 29 carried by the standards 11 and extend into the housing 14: as shown in Fig. 1. The free end of the bows 21 and 22 which are formed into hooks 30 and 31 extend through the slots 18 and engage the pins 32 and 33 which are mounted in the openings 15 and 16. The cover may be left in the closed position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 or it may be opened and held in the extended position by the stretchers 23 which are secured in the extended position by the latches 24. In order to prevent any danger of the wind disturbing the cover there has been provided bracing lines 34;
and 35 which are connected with the wagon body at convenient points. It will therefore be seen that this wagon top will be securely held in. a set up position and that when desired it may be folded or may be entirely removed from the wagon and placed upon another vehicle.
What is claimed is 1. A wagon cover providedwith a supporting yoke and supporting bows, standards, housings connected with said standards and having their side walls provided with slots leading from the upper edges thereof, pins extending through said housings, and straps carried by said standards, the arms of said yoke extending through the straps of said standards into said housings and the ends of said bows extending through said slots in said housings and having their inner end portions provided with hooks engaging said pins to pivotally and removably mount said bows.
2. A cover provided with a supporting yoke and supporting bows, standards, housings carried by said standards, pins passing through said housings, the arms of said yoke being removably connected with said standards and extending into said housings, and the ends of said bows being provided with hooks engaging said pins to removably and pivotally mount said bows.
3. In a device of the character described a cover comprising a yoke, bows, stretchers pivotally connected with said bows and having their inner end portions hingedly connected, latches pivotally connected with said yoke and provided with heels to limit their swinging movement in one direction, and means for yieldably holding said latches in a position for normally engaging said stretchers to releasably hold the same in an extended position.
In testimony whereof I, aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
