To all whom t may concern:
lBe it known that l, ROBERT LINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois, have invented certain new anduse ful Improvements in Crushers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to apparatus or machines used for crushing rock, ores, bones, or other materials. lits ob jects are to provide a machine of this character which will have exceedingly few parts which are liable to become loosened when the machine is in operation, which will be rigid and substantial in construction, which will be adapted to receive large pieces of rock or ore in proportion lto the size of the machine, which will have a novel and etlicient crushing action, which can be driven4 4with a comparatively small amount of power, and one in which the operative parts are well protected from dust or broken ore.
l attain these objects and such other advantages as may appear hereinafter by means of the machine or apparatus shown in the accompanyingdrawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through a crusher embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail showing the method of locking the outer dome or caslng in position; Fig. 3 is a detail showing the bottom of a removable feed opening liner; Fig. L is a perspective view of the bottom frame or support of the machine, parts being broken away to show the interior construction; Fig. 5 is a detail showing the operation of the Crusher dome actuating toggles; and Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the lower portion of the machine, with parts removed to show the vposition of the toggles.
As shown in these drawings, 7 indicates the base or lower part of the machine frame. The upper part 8 of the base 7 is preferably made cylindrical in form and is adapted to engage@ closely with the inner periphery of the lower end of the upper cap or dome shaped casing 9. These two members may be secured together in any desired manner, but l prefer to provide the outer casing 9, at its lower end, with threads 10 which engage with threaded posts or standards 11 extending upwardly from the base 7. In order to turn the outer casing 9 to adjust its position with respect to the base 7, it is provided aroundits lower edge with indentations in.,
order to .form lugs 12 which may be engaged by means of a bar, the arrangement being .such that the end of the bar may be inserted 1n the apertures between said lugs and the sldes of the standards 11 used as fulcrums against which the bar may be pressed in order toturn the dome. After the dome has been adjusted to its desired position, as for regulating the size of the material to be crushed, as will be explained hereinafter, it 1s locked in position by means of a lock nut or ring 13 which is also provided with lugs'14, so that it may be turned to engage closely with the lower edge of the dome 9. The upper end of the dome or casing 9 is formed in the shape of an inverted cone to form a feed hopper or opening 15. The inner walls of this cone may be protected and the size of the opening varied by having liner `cones 16 of different thicknesses. lln order to hold these cones in position against the upward thrust of the material in the Crusher, the outer surface is provided with lugs 17 adapted to engage with suitable correspondingly shaped lugs 18 on the inner surface of the upperend of the casing 9 in order to form a bayonet joint between these parts. The inner surface of the main portion of the dome or casing 9 is provided with a lining 19 preferably made of some highly resisting material if the Crusher is to be used for crushing hard rock orl the like, which lining may be readily removed and replaced after it becomes Worn. rlhis lining is held in position by means of wedges or keys 20, said Wedges being securely locked lary melans of pins or keys 21, as indicated in The rock or material to be crushed is broken by being engaged between the inner walls of the liner 19 and the upper surface of a movable inner dome 22. The dome 22 is formed with its upper surface of suitable pitch or contour to give the best results'with the different materials to beoperated upon. This dome is reciprocated vertically through a short distance in order to give the crushing action between it and the outer dome or casing. To this end it rests uppn a ring 23 which is slidably mounted on a'sleeve or bearing 24, this ring being preferably made in the form of a wheel with spokes extending out from the central bearing portion to the outer part of the ring. rlhe central portion of the ring 23 is pressed downwardly vided, at its lower end, with a gear 31 meshing with a pinion 32 on a drive shaft 33 which may be drivenl ,from any. suitable source of power. This drive shaft is preferably provided with bearings 34 formed in the base 7.
The central dome or crushing member 22 may be given its reciprocating vertical movement in any desired manner, and for this purpose I haveprovided the shaft 29 with a plurality of eccentrics 35, each eccentric being provided with an eccentric strap 36 connecting 4with a short connecting rod, or eccentric rod, 37 which in turn is pivotally connected with a horizontally movable block 38. The blocks 38 are recessed above and below to receive toggle members 39 and 40. Each of the lower toggle members 40 has its opposite end resting in a suitable recess in an upwardly projecting support 41 from the bottom of the chamber 28. Each of the upwardly extending toggle members 39 has its upper end resting in a suitable recess in a downwardly projecting support 42 from the lower side of the ring 23. In order to prevent the blocks 38 from moving laterally, they are preferably supported by means of guides 43 extending inwardly from-the inner wall of the chamber 28, as indicated in Fig. 6. The operation of these toggle members will be readily understood from the illustration in Fig. 5 which shows the eccentric in full lines in its outermost position, in which position the block 38 is moved so that the toggle members stand vertically, raising the dome or crushing member 22 to its highest position. The dottedlines show the eccentric in retracted position when the adjacent ends of the toggle members are moved inwardly, thereby allowing the ring 23, with the Vdome 22, to move downwardly. Of course, if desired, the throw of the eccentric might be increased, or the position of the toggles arranged so that a double movement would be given to the dome at each revolution of the eccentric.
The cover plate 27 is locked in position by means of hook shaped lugs 44 which engage with inwardly extending lugs 45 on the inner walls of the chamber 28. In order to prevent the plate from rotating after the lugs have become engaged, I provide a pivoted tongue 46...,which drops down be tween outwardly extending lugs or projections 47, as indicated in Fig. l.
In order to make the chamber 28 as nearly dust-proof as possible, the holes in the cover thereof, through which the supports 42 extend, may be provided with covers of felt or other suitable material, as indicated at 48.
As the material is crushed between the inner and outer domes, it passes down between the annular space between said domes onto lateral discharge chutes 49 and 50 and is discharged through outlet apertures 5l and 52. The discharge chutes 49 and 50 are preferably made integral with the base 7 and outer walls of the chamber 28 and serve to strengthen both the base and said walls. The large annular discharge opening between the crushing members allows the crushed material to pass rapidly away, vthereby enabling the machine to deliver an unusually large amount of material. It will be particularly noted that this discharge opening is much larger than ordinarily provided with rectangular jaw Crushers.
Having thus described my invention, which I do not wish to limit to the exact details of construction or arrangement of parts shown and described, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a crusher, the combination of an outer stationary crushing member having a feed opening in the top thereof, an inner vertically movable crushing member arranged concentrically with the outer member, a central guide for..said inner member located wholly within or below the same, a plurality of toggles.v arranged adjacent to the outer periphery .of the inner member for supporting and actuating the same, and means connected to and operating said toggles. t"
2. In a crushing machine, the combination of a base, an outer crushing member secured to said base, said member being approximately hemispherical in shape, a feed hopper in the top of said member, a shaft mounted in said base, eccentrics on said shaft, toggles actuated by said eccentrics, and an inner crushing member supported on said toggles and adapted to be actuated thereby.
3. In a crusher of the character described,
vthe combination of a base, a drive shaft mounted in said base, a central chamber in said base, having shaft bearings in the top and bottom thereof, a shaft mounted in said bearings, means for turning said shaft from the drive shaft, a'ring slidably mounted on the upper shaft bearing, a spring for pressing said ring downwardly, a crushing member mounted on said ring, toggles supporting said ring from the bottom of said chamber, means for actuating said toggles from eccentrics on said shaft, an adjustable outer casing secured to said base, a. feed hopper niega-oa for said casing, linings for said casing, and discharge chutes arranged in said base for receiving the material discharged around the annular space between the inner crushing member and the inner lining :tor said casing and discharging it laterally from said space.
