Description

S. HORSFORD.
SASH LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED AUG127. 1914.
PM Co..wAsHlNa'mN D c SAMUEL HOBSFQRD, OF DORCHES'IER, MASSACHUSETTS.
SLASH-LOCI'.
Application led August 27, 1914.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, SAMUEL I-IonsroRD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Dorchester, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in sash locks, and more particularly to a lock that will permit the locking of the sash in various positions so that ventilation is provided for.
Another object is the provision of a sash lock which shall be of simple construction, reliable and eflicient in operation and ineX- pensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view through the sashes of a window, showing the application of my impro-ved sash lock thereto. Fig. 2 represents a fragmental sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 represents a horizontal sectional view, showing the notched vertical bar of the sash lock in section.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numerals A and B designate respectively the upper and lower sashes of a window. A substantially rectangular base plate 5 is secured by screws 6, or equivalent means, to the lower sash B and extends a short distance over the lower rail of the upper sash A. The end of the plate 5 projecting outwardly from the lower sash B 1s formed with an elongated opening slidably receiving a vertically disposed bar 8 having a plurality of notches 9 in one edge thereof. 'Ihe lower extremity 10 of the bar 8 is directed angularly and secured by screws or equivalent means 11 to the upper sash A. A locking member 12 is pivotally secured at Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1915.
serial No. 858,596.
13 to the free extremity of the plate 5 and is formed with an enlargement 14 adjacent its pivoted end defining a cam adapted for engagement in any one of the notches 9. The locking member 12 adjacent its free end is twisted, as indicated at 15, providing the verticallv disposed handle 16 whereby the member may be conveniently operated. An angular arm 17 is pivotally secured at 18 to the handle portion 16 of the locking member 12 and the free end 19 thereof is directed outwardly so as to ride upon the vertical bar 8. The angular arm 17, when swung to the vertical position illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, or outwardly of the locking member 12, provides as a suitable handle whereby the member 12 may be swung to operative or inoperative position.
In use, the sashes A and B are adjusted as desired and the locking member 12 is swung to the position illustrated in Fig. 3 when the enlargement or cam 14 thereof engages one of the notches 9 and reliably secures the sashes A and B against relative movement. To further insure against unauthorized persons from unlocking the window, the angular arm 17 is swung downwardly, from the dotted line position illustrated in Fig. 1, against the side of the vertical bar 8 opposite from that against which the locking member 12 is engaged. In this position, it is clearly evident that the arm 17 reliably insures against the locking member 12 from being swung to unlocked position by persons outside of the window.
What I claim is:
In combination, upper and lower window sashes, a vertically disposed bar secured to one of said sashes and having a plurality of notches in one edge, an apertured plate secured to the other sash slidably receiving said notched bar, a locking member pivotally secured to the opposite end of said plate, a cam projecting laterally of the pivoted end of said locking member adapted, when the latter is swung against said bar, to engage within one of said notches, the free end of said locking member being twisted, and an arm pivotally secured to the locking member at right angles to the pivotal axis of the latter having a curved end adapted, during swinging movement of the arm to engage the side of said vertically disposed In testimony whereof I alix my signature bar opposite said locking member to draw 1n presence of two witnesses.
said cam into engagement with one of said SAMUEL HORSFORD. notches, said arm, when moved into inoper- Witnesses:
