The purposes of this invention are to provide a form of tagwhich may be economically manufactured, which may be quickly and easily attached to the merchandise, and which, when attached, will not be subject to inadvertent displacement; which is of such form as to obviate the possibility of its catching on the material or other articles with which it is brought in contact, and

As is readily apparent from the illustrations, it will be seen that my improved tag may be blanked out of any suitable flexible sheet material in the form of a strip 1 which is divided by fold lines 2 into three sec-- nate at a locking tongue 7, having locking shoulders 8 extending beyond the adjacent diagonal edges. Adjacent the locking tongue 7, a retaining aperture 9 is formed in the tongue section, the same being of any desired and suitable outline.

The slot section 6 is provided with a slot 10 extending transversely of the section, and of irregular 'form such as to leave a retaining tongue 11 which is directed-transversely of the slot and longitudinally of the section 6. This retaining tongue 11 is of suitable contour to enter the retaining slot 9 of the tongue section, and is disposed upon the same axis perpendicularly to the fold lines '2, as is the retaining aperture 9. llhe locking slot 10 and the locking tongue 7 are likewise disposed on the same axis perpendicularly to the fold lines 2.

As will be seen in Fig. 3, the distance between the free end of the retaining tongue 11 and the adjacent fold line 2 is slightly greater than the width between the terminal edge of retaining slot 9 and the side of the locking tongue 7. As also shown in Fig. 3, it will be seen that the length of the looking tongue 7 exceeds the length of slot 10, the length of slot 10 being a trifle more than the length of locking tongue 7 less the length of one of theshoulders 8.

The tag is attached to an article of merchandise by folding the same thereabout, bending it on the fold lines 2. The looking tongue 7 is then inserted in slot 10 over retaining tongue 11, which may be done by inserting first one end of the locking tongue and moving it laterally imtil the adjacent diagonal edge of tongue section 5 contacts with the material at the end of slot 10, which will give sufficient clearance between the other end of locking tongue 7- and the other end of slot 10 to permit the complete insertion of the locking tongue therethrough. When so inserted, locking tongue 7 will of course lie below slot section 6 and consequently below the free extremity of retaining tongue 11 which will occupy the space afforded by retaining slot 9. The outer corners of locking tongue 7 may be beveled or rounded off as in the manner shown to facilitate the insertion of the tongue through the slot 10. When thus placed in position, it will be observed that tongue section 5 is interlocked with slot section 6, both by virtue of the fact that the length of tongue 7 exceeds the length of slot 10, and by virtue of the fact that retaining tongue 11 extends through retaining slot 9. When so placed in position, the tag is not subject to inadvertent removal except by such extraordinary force as is suflicient to tear the tag. Furthermore, the tag presents a smooth exterior, free from projections which would be likely to engage material with which it is brought in contact. The outer surface of the tag being plain, it is adapted for the reception of markings.

It is obvious that this tag is very economical to manufacture, as it may be formed entirely in a single blanking operation from an integral sheet of materlal.

I am aware that the device is capable of various obvious modifications not herein illustrated or described without departing from the scope of the invention involved.

What I claim is: Y

1. A marking tag made of a sheet of flexible material divided by'fold lines into a plurality of sections foldable upon one another,

- one of said sections being formed with a locking slot and an engaging tongue extending thereinto, and another of said sections being formed with a terminal locking tongue insertible within said locking slot when the sections are in folded position and a slot adj acent to said locking tongue adapted to permit the passage of the retaining tongue therethrough.

2. A marking tag made of a sheet of flexible material divided by fold lines into a plurality of sections foldable upon one another, one of said sections being provided with a transversely extending locking slot, a terminal'one of said sections being formed with a terminal locking tongue disposed on the axis of the slot, said tongue being formed with looking shoulders and inclusive thereof exceeding the length of said locking slot, said locking tongue, exclusive of one of said looking shoulders being less than thelength of said locking slot, for the purpose described.

A marking tag made of a sheet of flexible material divided by fold lines into a plurality of sections foldable one upon another, one of said sections being formed with a slot therethrough, and a retaining tongue adjacent to said slot, the terminal one of said sections being formed with an end portion insertible through said slot and an aperture adjacent thereto adapted to permit the passage of said retaining tongue whereby to retain the end portion against withdrawal from the slot.

A marking tag formed of sheet material and divided by fold lines into an intermediate section and two terminal sections, one of said terminal sections being provided with a slot therethrough, and a retaining tongue adjacent said slot, the other of said terminal locking sections being formed with a terminal tongue insertible through said slot and adapted to engage walls thereof to lock the terminal sections together and an aperture adjacent said terminal tongue adapted to permit the passage of said retaining tongue into engagement with the terminal tongue whereby to hold it against withdrawal from the slot.

5. A marking tag made of a flexible strip' divided into a plurality of sections by fold lines, which sections are foldable upon one another, one of said sections being provided with a slot therethrough, a terminal one of said sections having an extremity formed for insertion through said slot, said slotted section and said terminal section being'provided with engaging portions apart from said slot and extremity adapted to prevent withdrawal of said extremity from said slot.

6. A marking tag comprising a flexible strip provided with a slot therethrough, and a retaining tongue projecting into said slot, one extremity of said strip being formed for locking engagement in said slot, and provided with an aperture adapted to permit the passage of said tongue therethrough.
