To all who 1n it may concern.
Be it known that 1, ROBERT Boo'rY, of the city of Toronto, county of York, Province of ()ntario, Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Flask- Closing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dental flask closing devices, and the objects of my invention are: firstly, to construct a closing device, whereby a continuous spring pressure will be applied to the flask supported in the closing device so that the necessary pressure against the flask will be automatically applied during the vulcanizing process; secondly, to construct my device so as to make it adjustable for various sizes of flasks; thirdly, to provide particular locking means for the vertical members of the frame, and fourthly to provide a closing device of the character set forth entirely made of metal which will not corrode and which will have a long life under reasonably The construction of my device will be hereinafter set forth and what I claim as new will be pointed out in the claims forming part of this specification.

It is well known that in connection with dental work, what is known as a flask is' used to vulcanize the material placed therein used in connection with the manufacture of false teeth and plates. The flask in question must be kept under pressure when the same prises a metal frame made of non-corrosive Specification of Letters Patent.

material, such as brass, and this frame is composed of two vertical members A which are connected by a compound curve B to each end of the bottom bar C, which is bowshaped. The crown D of the bow-shaped bar C rests against the metal plate E, as illustrated in Fig. 2. Any suitable means is employed to connect said plate with the bar C. My preferred construction for this purpose consists in providing the said plate, at opposite sides, with a pair of ears or lugs F, which straddle the said bar. The ends of these ears or lugs are finally bent into the position shown in Fig. 4 so as to firmly hold said plate in place.
The clamping device co-acting with the bar C and plate E is composed of upper and lower plates G and H. The upper plate G is provided at each end with slots I through which extend the vertical members A of the said frame. The said vertical members are )rovided with notches a at their outer sides. These notches are in alinement, and when the plates G and H occupy the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the end pieces Z) of the upper plate G occupy the notches a. By reason of the compound curve B at each end of the vertical members A, these vertical members are permitted to be sprung inward, and as the slots 1 are long enough, they permit of the disengagement of the end pieces Z) from the notches a so that the clamping device may be moved longitudinally on the members A. When the said clamping device has been positioned opposite either of the pairs of notches (an upper pair of notches a is shown to show that this device is adjustable for flasks of difierent sizes) the pressure of the hand against the members A is released, thus permitting them to spring outward so that the end piece 7) will engage with the said notches.
In order to prevent the vertical. members A. from having any movement toward each other when the plate G has been positioned, I provide the lower plate H which performs the function of a look. This lower plate H is mounted on the pressure screw J which is threaded therethrougl. In the position ofthe plate H illustrated in Fig. 1, it is out of engagement with the vertical members A, whereas the said plate is shown in Fig. 2 as looking the said vertical members A from movement toward each other. Each end of the said plate H is provided with a boss K oppositely faced as will be understood, and when the parts occupy the position in Fig. 2, these bosses are in contact with the shoulders L (one only of which is shown in Fig. 3), forming part of the ends M of the upper plate G, and they are snugly held against the inner sides of the vertical members A. The fact that the bosses K are snugly held in contact with the said vertical members prevents any movement of said members toward each other, and so positivelylocks the upper plate G in the notches a. The shoulders L co-act with the bosses K to limit the movement of the plate H when this plate has been brought into the proper position in respect to the plate G.
The inner faces N of the ends M (which ends are preferably made thicker than the rest of the plate G) are formed substantially at the angle shown in Fig. 3 so as to permit of the movement of the lower plate H.
I show the lower plate H as provided with a bushing O which extends through a hole P formed in the plate I may dispense with this bushing if desired, as will be understood. The pressure screw J of necessity passes through the plate G and carries at its lower end a disk Q, which is preferably mounted thereon by reason of the flared head B. This construction or its equivalent permits the said disk to remain stationary against the flask 0 (which is shown dotted) while the pressure screw J is being turned.
As will be seen clearly in cross section in Fig. 2, the plates G and H are concaved or bow-shaped. This shape of the said plates is essential in order that they may co-act with the bottom bar 0 and members A. hen the flask 0 is positioned on the plate E, and the plates G and H have been adjusted in the right slots, the pressure screw J is screwed tightly down to force the disk Q against the said flask. The pressure of the screw J against the flask 0 will more or less cause the plates G and H and the bar C to spring outward and the members to lengthen and partly spring outward. During the vulcanizing process, the rubber within the flask 0, by reason of being forced into the cavities of the mold, would result in a lessening of the pressure against the contents of the flask if the pressure screw J alone were depended upon. But since the plates G and H and bar 0, and members A are under strain, as the rubber is being forced into the cavities of the mold, the before-mentioned parts keep continuous pressure exerted against the flask I thus keeping the mold within the flask continuously in intlmate contact with the rubber or equivalent material. As the rubber is forced into the cavities of the mold, this of the flask do not touch each other in such a manner as to prevent them being forced closer together to enable continuous pressure to be exerted against the mold and the rubber.
The curved connection'between the Vertical members A and the bar C will permit of these members A being moved laterally apart under the action of the plates G and H and bar C. By reason of the compound curves or bends B connecting the vertical members A with thebottom bar C, it will be understood that these curves or bends will permit of the elongation of the vertical members A so as to co-act with the plates G and H and bottom bar C.
The construction of the closing device described and illustrated provides a continuous ring of elasticity to surround the flask.
While I have described what I consider to be the best embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that the principle of my invention can be embodied in different forms, and I desire not to be limited beyond the requirements of the prior art and the terms of my claims.
The ears or lugs (Z are carried by the plate E and as they are substantially of the same height as the ears or lugs F, they support the plate E horizontally.
Should such pressure be applied to the plates G and H by the pressure screw J as to destroy the elasticity of these plates, the compound bends or curves B of the members A will provide for the necessary pressure of the screw J against the flask.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a device of the class described comprising a frame composed of two vertically disposed notch-provided members and a bottom bowshaped bar which is connected to each of the said members by a compound bend; a plate carried by said bottom bar, a clamping device comprising a concaved plate provided at each end with a slot through which extend the said vertically disposed members, the end pieces of said plate normally resting in an alined pair of slots; a pressure screw operating through said plate,'and means' designed to engage with said vertically disposed members of said frame in order to lock them apart, as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a device of the class described comprising a frame composed of two vertically disposed notch-provided members and a bottombow shaped bar which is connected to each of the said members by a compound bend; a
plate carried by said bottom bar, aclamping device comprising concaved plate provided at each end with a slot through which extend the said vertically disposed members, the endpieces of said platenormally rests ing in an alinedpair ofslots; aipressure' screw operatingthrough said plate; a con ca ed locking plate mounted on said pres.-
sure screw and operating underneath said slot-provided plate and provided at each end With a boss which when said plate is in normal position rests against the inner sides of said Vertically disposed members, and a shoulder carried by each end of said slotprovided plate and against which the said bosses rest when said last-mentioned plate is in normal position, as set forth.
3. The combination with a dental flask, of a closing device comprising a frame bent at each side so as to allow the frame a tendency to lengthen under pressure; a supporting plate fixed to said frame in a horizontal position; adjustable resilient pressure plates IIlOVELblY mounted on said frame, and a pressure screw operating through said plates, the whole combined to operate as set forth.
