Description

B. S. SMITH.
HOLDER FOR BLOTTING PAPER AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. I2, I9I4.
Patented Dec. 2 1915.
m e w UNITE stares BENJAMIN SEDGELY-,SMITH, .OF SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA.
HOLDER FOR BLOTTING-PAPER AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN SEDGELY SMrrn, a citizen of the Commonwealth of Australia, and residing at No. 9 Jamieson street, in the city of Sydney, in the State of New South Wales, Commonwealth-of Australia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders for Blotting-Paper and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the use of blotting paper or other absorbing material when employed in drying or removing a superfluity of ink or other liquid from paper or the like.
A holder constructed according to this invention allows of a more even pressure to be applied to the blotting paper or other medium thereby giving a better contact between the opposing surfaces than that obtained in present holders, as 'very often patches of ink are left undried or unabsorbed through an uneven pressure and uneven contact being made and further-more this holder may be used in conjunction with a letter copy-book so as to absorb the excessive moisture that is applied to a sheet which is adapted to receive the impression, and still further may be used to complete the copying process thereby obviating the necessity of a screw-press or the like.
The essential feature of this invention consists in the holder having a carriage framin with lateral rollers thereon and adapted to be reciprocated so that the rollers thereof will bear upon the blotting paper or other medium during reciprocation of the said carriage framing.
The carriage framing has ear pieces or lugs taking around a pair of parallel longitudinal rods rigidly afiixed to end vertical members, and to which members a strip or strips of blotting paper or the like are attached in any suitable manner.
But in order that this invention may be clearly understood reference will now be made to the drawings herewith in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder constructed according to this invention. -Fig. 2 a longitudinal central sectional elevation thereof. Fig. 3 a cross sectional elevation on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 a fragmentary view of a sectional elevation on plane 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 the holder con- Speolflcation of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 12, 1914. Serial No. 811,640.
-members have their lower longitudinal edges slightly and inwardly curved back.
Loosely attached to the vertical members -11 and 12 by means of screws 14 and coil springs 15 are the clamping members 16 and centrally of each clamping member is an orilice through which passes the clamping screw 17 provided with a milled head 18.
The ends of a strip or strips of blotting paper 19' or the like are fastened to the vertlcal members by the clamping plates 16 and clamping screws 17. A air of laterally positioned rollers 20 are a apted to bear upon the blotting paper 19 or the like and have trunnions 21 taking into bearing orifices contained in the resilient depending members 22 of the carriage framing The carriage framing is loosely secured to the longitudinal parallel guide rods 10 and retained in position by lugs or ear pieces 2-1 taking around the guide rods 10 and provided with sufficient clearance space 25 so that on reciprocating the carriage framing 23 no pressure will be brought to bear upon the rods 10 when pressure is applied to the knob or handle 26 that is rigidly affixed to the carriage framing 23.
Thus it will be clearly seen that when pressure is applied to the carriage framing 23 by virtue of the knob 26, said pressure is conveyed by the rollers 20 to the blotting paper 19 or other medium and by the reciprocation of the carriage framing 23 an even pressure is distributed over the blotting paper 19 or the like thereby insuring good contact being made between the two opposing surfaces and thereby readily drying and absorbing the ink or other aqueous matter and as in the case'of using a letter copying'book or the like, completing the copying process.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A device of the kind described comrisin in combination a framing, consistmg 0 a pair of Ion itudinal parallel rods and end vertical mem ers, a strip of absorbent material arranged between the end vertical members, clamping members for the absorbent material arranged upon the vertical members and having the lower edges turned inwardly, a carriage adapted to be reciprocated along said framing and a set ciprocation of the carriage.
of laterally di osed rollers adapted tobear upon the absor ent material upon reciprocation of the carriage."
2. Adevice'of thekind described comprising in combination a framing consistin of a pair of longitudinal parallel rods an material arranged between the "end vertical members, clamping members for the absorbent material arranged upon the vertical members and having the lower edges turned inwardly, means for resiliently-mounting the clamping members upon the vertical'members of the framing, a carriage adapted to be reci rocatcd along said framing and a set,of aterally disposed rollers adapted to bear upon the absorbent material upon re- 3. A device of the kind described comrisin incombination a framing consistmg 0 a pair of longitudinal parallel rods and end vertical members, a strip of absorbent material arranged between the end vertical members, clamping members for the absorbent material arranged upon the vertical members and having the; 1ower.edges turned inwardly, means for resiliently mounting the clam ing members upon the verticalmembers o the framing, means for varying the resiliency) of the mounting, a carriage adapted to e reciprocated a on said framing and a set of laterally disposed rollers adapted to bear upon the absorbent material upon reciprocation of the carriage.
4. A device of the kind described comprising in combination a framing consistin of a pair of longitudinal parallel rods an end vertical members, a stri of absorbent material arranged between t e end vertical Homes 0! this patent may be obtained toimembers,:a carria e adapted to be reci roc'ate'd alo'ng's'aid raming, lugs adapte to fit artially around the longitudinal parallel rods with clearance space, a set of'laterally disposed rollers adapted to bear upon the absorbent material u on reciprocation of the end vertical members, ,a strip of absorbent carriage, members epending from the reciprocating carria e for supporting the laterally disposed rol ers, and means for loosely mounting the reciprocating carriage upon the framing.
5. A device of the kind described comprisin in combination a framing consistmg 0 a pair of longitudinal parallel rods,
end vertical members upon said longitudinalparallel rods a strip of blotting paper arranged between said end members, clamping plates for the blotting paper, screws connecting the end members with the clamping plates, springs arranged between the end members and the clampin plates, a carriage adapted to be reciprocated along said framing, lugs adapted to fit partially around the longitudinal parallel rods with clearance spaces, a set of laterally dis osed rollers adapted to bear upon the absor ent material upon reciprocation of the carriage, members depending from the reciprocating carriage for supporting thelaterally disposed rollers, and means for loosely mounting the reciprocating carriage u on the framing.
In testimony w ereof I have hereunto set. my hand in the presence of two witnesses this seventeenth day of November one thousand nine hundred and thirteen.
