To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. MULLIGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Henryetta, in the county of Okmulgee and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cattle-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to cattle guards and consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a gate or guard structure having parts so arranged that the gates will normally remain in an Open position with relation to the gate opening but in the event that an animal or a person approaches the opening and steps upon a platform with which the gate structure is provided the gate automatically rises and closes the said opening. The gate is especially adapted to be used along railroad tracks at crossings and other places where it is desired that normally an unobstructed passage way should be presented for the free movement of trains or other vehicles, however, the gaps in fences the ends of which terminate against the crossing may be closed when animals or persons approach the said gaps.
In the accompanying drawingz-Figure 1 is a plan view of a guard showing the gate in an open position. Fig. 2 is an edgeelevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
By way of illustration the gate is shown as used in conjunction with a track indicated at 1. It is of course understood that this track. passes through gaps or openings in fence sections disposed transversely of the said track. Bearings 2 are mounted upon one of the ties of the track 1 and a shaft 3 -is journaled for rotation in the said bearings. Bars 1 are fixed at their inner ends to the shaft 3 and a rail 5 connects the outer ends of the said bars 4 together. Hooks 6 are fixed to the shaft 3 at one side of the axis thereof and links 7 engageat one end withthe said hooks. A hook 8 is fixed toone of the ties of the track 1 and its end portion is disposed in the path of movement of one of the bars 4 whereby the upward swinging movement of the said bars is limited. Thus it will be seen that means is provided for limiting the upward swinging movement of all of the bars 4 and the downward swinging movement of the said bars is limited by the ties of the track 1. A platform 9 extends transversely with relation to the track 1 and the beams of the said platform extend under the rails of the said track. The platform 9 is mounted for vertical movement. Springs 10 are interposed between some of the ties of the track 1 and the underside of the platform 9 and are under tension with a tendency to hold the platform 9 in an elevated position. The links 7 are also pivotally connected with the edge portion of the platform 9. Links 11 are also pivotally connected with the platform 9 at one end and the other ends of said links pivotally connect with hooks or eyes 12 which are fixed to one of the ties of the track 1. Therefore it will be seen that under normal condition the bars 4 lie down against the ties of the track 1. When, however, an animal or a person approaches the gate and steps upon the platform 9 the said platform is depressed against the upward stress of the springs 10 and the link 7 moves longitudinally whereby the hooks 6 are rotated or turnedabout the axis of the shaft 3 and the shaft is turned whereby the bars 4 are moved from a horizontal position to a positionat an angle with relation to a horizontal and the gap in the fence is closed.
