To all @07mm t may concern f Be it known that I, OTTO F. GLAENSKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medicine Lake, in the county of Sheridan and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in WagonrIongues, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wagon tongues and especially with reference to the construction of an improved tip iron and safety catch by means of which a neck yoke may be attached at the front end of the tongue so securely that it will not become casually detached therefrom and may yet be readily removed or detached therefrom when desired, the object of the invention being to provide improved devices of this character by means of which a neck yoke can be detachably secured to a wagon pole so that it cannot become casually detached therefrom and whereby dropping of the tongue is prevented and whereby the team will be enabled to hold the wagon against backing down hill and by means of the neck yoke in the event that a tug or swingletree lshould break or a tug should become disconnected, a further object being to secure and effect improvements in the construction of the tip iron.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of the front portion of a tongue provided with a tip iron and safety catch constructed in accordance with my invention and showing a neck yoke connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing a modied construction of the spring.
In accordance with my invention the wagon tongue 1 is provided at its front or outer end with a tip iron 2 which is here shown as substantially of U-form, comprising upper and lower arms 3 4 and a bight 5 which connects said arms. The upper and lower arms are secured respectively on the upper and lower sides of the tongue and the bight is arranged in front of the front end of the tongue and spaced therefrom and so that it may be employed for the attachment of a lead team or horse if desired. The lower arm is formed with a longitudinal slot 6 and the material formed by cut- Speccaten of Letters E'atent.

ting the sides of said slot constitutes an integral strip 7 which is united at its rear end to the arm and which is bent to form a vert-ical U-shaped stop 8 and a forwardly projecting arm 9, the latter being arranged in the rear end of the slot. I also provide a safety catch 10 which is hinged or pivoted as at l1, at its front end, to the arm l of the tip iron, at the front end of the slot 5 and is formed at its rear end with a vertical upturned portion 12 which forms a shoulder that is spaced from the stop 8. At the upper end of said shoulder is a rearwardly extending arm 13 which is adapted to bear on the arm 9 to limit the downward movement of the safety catch. A. spring 14 is employed which bears on the arm 13 and normally holds the safety catch in depressed position.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 3 the spring 14a is shown as a flat spring. Any suitable form of spring may be employed. rl`he usual ring 15 to which the neck yoke 16 is connected is slipped over the front end of the tongue and rearwardly under the safety catch and the latter snaps behind the ring thus locking or holding the ring between the shoulder of the safety catch and the stop of the tip iron. This safety catch thus coacts with the tip iron to prevent the ring from slipping forward and releasing the neck yoke from the tongue, even in the event that all of the tugs or bolts of the swingletrees should become detached or broken. In the event thatl such an accident should occur the neck yoke will still remain firmly connected to the tip of the pole and hence the horses may use the neck yoke to prevent the wagon from backing down a hill or to guide the wagon and thus avoid an accident and in the event that a team should be running away and the tugs broken or disconnected the neck yoke ywill still secure the team to the tongue, the tip of the tongue will be prevented from dropping' and by reason of the team being thus held by the neck yoke connected to the tongue, the management and control of the tongue even if unruly will be greatly facilitated and the safety of the person or persons in the wagon greatly promoted. When it is desired to detach the neck yoke this may be readily done by first pressing the catch upwardly and then slipping the ring 15 forwardly from the pole tip.
IVhile I have herein shown and described a preferred formof my invention I would have it understood that Changesl may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope ofY the appended claim. y
'Having thus described my invention, I claim:-
` A wagon tongue having a U-shaped tip iron provided with a longitudinal slot in its stop at one end of the slot and formed of material displaced in making the slot, said stop having an arm in the rear end of the Slot, in combination with a catch arranged with its free end in the front end of the slot and pivotally connected at the front end of V the lowerarm of the tip iron, said Catch against the rearwardly extending arm of the catch for forcing the same against the. arm of the stop. y
In testimony whereof I afiX my signature in presence of two witnesses:
