To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, MARTIN A. STRAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at NewRichmondfln the county of St. Croix and-State-of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toe-v Straps and Stirrupsfor Skees; and I do 7 hereby declare the following to be a full,

clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has for its object toprovide an extremely simple and highly eflicient' 7 On the other hand, metal forms a better stirrup for engagement with the edges of the shoe sole. These features are accomplished in my improved device, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indi-, cate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing an ordinary skee havingzmy combined stirrup and toe strap ap, plied thereto; Fig. 2 is a view on a much larger scale, showing a portion of the skee and the combined'stirru'p and toe strap;

'5 indicated by the numeral 1, is formed with a mortised hole 2' that extends from edge to edge of the central or intermediate portion thereof. 'The stirrup' is formed from a metal strap, preferably of steel or iron, indicated by the numeral 3. This metal strap, at its ends, is formed with. toe strap engaging buckles which may be made in difl'erent ways. In the drawings, the said strap is shown as formed at one end with a rectangularperf0- ration 4 and with a tongue 5, and at its other *eiidfitis shown as provided with a rectangular perforation 6 and a tongue 7. The

tongue 5 is cut from that portion of the metal strap 3 that is inward of the perforation 4, and-it is then turned outward or upward, as best shown in Figs. 3 and 5, so thatit overlaps the said-perforation 4: and engages the upper end portion of the strap.

and it is elongated slightly bv pinching the same laterally and upsetting the same, so that it is caused to overlap with that end of the said metal strap. The perforations 4 and 6 andtongues 5 and '7 constitute what may-be termed buckles, for engaging and holding the ends ofthe leather toe strap 8. 'After the metal strap 3 has been inserted through the mortisedhole2 of the skee, its

toe strap 8 is formed with eyelets or perforations 9, through which the tongues 5 and 7 are adapted to be passed. The said tongues are quite stifi, but will spring so as to permit adjustments of the toe strap or the application thereof to the stirrup, or the removal thereof, therefrom. They will, however, prevent accidental separation of the toe strap from the stirrup.

With the above described device, it is evident that the leather toe strap is made very short, being only a little more than suflicient to span the space between the upper ends of the stirrup arms.
